JOHN GREEN
Colin Singleton is a child prodigy with a problem—girls named Katherine…19 Girls named Katherine to be exact. At the beginning of An Abundance of Katherines, Colin, a child prodigy, has just been dumped by his latest Katherine girlfriend. Worrying about his relationship and maintaining his genius status, Colin spirals into depression. Finally sick of the drama, Colin’s best friend, Hassan, drags Colin out of his room and onto a road trip that randomly ends in Gundshot, Tennessee. In Gunshot, Colin and Hassan help out the town’s “all american girl” Lindsey record a history of the town’s factory, however, Colin seems more focused on developing an equation that correctly predicts relationships endings. Through a series of comical events (including a kiss, a wild pig, hornets, and guns), Colin eventually learns to be less self-centered, Hassan steps out of his Muslin laws, and Lindsey learns to be herself. In the end, Colin finds happiness not in another Katherine but in connecting with those that he can be himself around—genius or not.
