Alice I loved this book, but disliked the ending. I really liked Chiyo at first, but then she became just like Hatsumomo in the end.

Tyshawn Knight I have to admit i liked the fact that the main character wound up with the man of her dreams but, I did not like the exact words she said at the end of the book. If I had wrote the book I would have ended it the same but, with different wording.

Monica I didnt like what happen to hatsumomo bc i sympathize with her battles too but i guess it was karma. I had no problem with the ending.

Dana I absolutely loved this book but I felt that it was loosing it's magic towards the end. The Chairman asked Mameha to make her a geisha and after nearly 20 years of waiting she just becomes his mistress? What!? I didn't even know he had a wife and I was disappointed because I thought he'd pull Sayuri out of Gion to get married.. instead after their romance blooms, they start talking about business I feel that their love started going downhill. She mentions that she moved to NY so that her child doesn't stand in the way of the Chairman's heir. But it's his own child as if he wouldn't feel attached to it. She is just his mistress now, that's degrading their relationship to me.. That's IF she even had his child and I would've liked to know because it's not a real memoir! (even though I thought the whole story and characters were real until the end acknowledgments :( ) Even though the end wasn't as I expected it to be I still love the novel :)

Paul I loved the book up until the ending, which just seemed rushed and silly. Her experiences in NYC might have been interesting, but it was all just hurried through.

Those are exactly my thoughts! It was rushed at the end and their love wasn't even romantic anymore, she says so herself that he talked about business etc. I would've liked to read about Sayuri's life in NY..

yes same, i would've liked to know more and how did her child fit into her being a geisha in new york? or was she the owner of a geisha house?

Bluebell I actually really liked the ending. I feel like Chiyo reached a place of contentment at last and she deserved to have the chairman after all the horrible things that she experienced in life. I liked how it goes back to the beginning and it kinds of rounds off the story by saying that all our struggles fall away in the end, or something like that. It's such a beautiful book x

Bernice Stockstill For me, it is really great book) very interesting, full of romantic and feelings)

Talal It's not a Hollywood ending, to be sure. In fact, I think the film ends with a line that says, "These are the memoirs of a geisha, not of an empress or a queen." Sayuri was insanely lucky to have what she had, given her world and its limits. I'm sure many a woman in who lacked Hatsumomo's malevolence still would up a painted whore.

But her life was indeed a work of art, and that, indeed, was her triumph.

Gwendolyn Cayad I was expecting much more romance at the end of the book but I was disappointed.

Vlad Gu Like I said in another topic, the ending just fell flat for me, negating any sort of personal growth Sayuri had gone through - she settled for becoming a glorified mistress to an underdeveloped character.

I barely knew The Chairman, so Sayuri's "love" for him felt juvenile to me. After her very Hatsumomo-esque plan to manipulate Nobu had backfired, I expected Sayuri to face repercussions, learn something, and eventually get over her obsession with Chairman, but the author decided to opt for something more cliche. It just wasn't satisfying.

Perla B I really disliked the ending. It felt like it was rushed and there should have been more to Sayuri's that was glossed over. Sure Sayuri felt content but for all the trouble and mountains she had to climb there should have been more for her. Instead, she settled for a mistress to a forgettable character who never showed interest in her besides once when she was a child. It honestly feels like we were cheated out of an ending.
