When He Was Wicked, by Julia Quinn

Everything was so much simpler... when he was wicked.

In every life there is a turning point. A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breathtaking, that one knows one's life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London's most infamous rake, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton.

After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca's surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer—the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin.

But that was then... Now Michael is the earl and Francesca is free, but still she thinks of him as nothing other than her dear friend and confidant. Michael dares not speak to her of his love... until one dangerous night, when she steps innocently into his arms, and passion proves stronger than even the most wicked of secrets...

We will be continuing the Bridgertons series in June with Francesca's story. Please join us, or just stop by to say, "Hi!" or tell us which cover you prefer. But...

Expect Spoilers!

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments No I think this one book in the series can be a stand alone.almost the whole book happens somewhere other than London. But the names could be confusing too many bridgerton siblings

June (ladyjune) | 315 comments I don't know, but I read Bridgeton in chronological order (well sort of) and I still got confused with Francesca's book with the time frame and all. But other than that it was fun read

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapter 1 – 6
There is quite a bit of character development in the first part of this book. Because of that, I broke the questions about Francesca and Michael down into several questions. You might want to read them all before answering the first one.
1. Is this your first time reading this book? If not, how long has it been since you’re read it; how many times have you done so?

2. Francesca Q1: What do you think of Francesca? Of her feeling like a “changeling” in her own family? Do you buy that she is totally oblivious to Michael’s attraction? Did her love of John blind her to that possibility? Or was it the easy going friendship amongst the three of them?

3. This book, more than the others in the Bridgerton series, is a little sadder and darker; so many heartbreaking scenes. Was any one more heartbreaking than the others? Still, this story is one of my favorites in the series, as the rewards are so great in the end. Comments.

4. Michael Q1: What do you think of Michael? What a dilemma of Camelot proportions, to love both John like a brother and lust after his cousin’s wife. I had to laugh, when Francesca was thinking of him matched with Eloise, over him “trying to compute the level of guilt one might feel for being in love with one’ cousin’s wife and one’s wife’s sister.” Do you feel he really is in love with Francesca right now, or is it just lust of the unattainable?

5. Michael Q2: Do you blame Michael for running off to India? Was he a coward? Or just too grief stricken? Too young? Was the Earldom too much for him? Was it his guilt for desiring Francesca? Her pain too agonizing? Or just knowing that her availability would be too much for him?

6. Francesca Q2: What do you think about Francesca not replying to Michael’s letters?

7. Francesca Q3: Though she was aware of his attractiveness, when did her nerve endings first becoming aware of Michael as a man? By the fireplace after his return from India? Is that why she moved out of Kilmartin House? Or later, when they were out strolling in Hyde Park and she makes a jab at his legendary rakishness and her role as his confidante?

8. Michael Q3: Have you impressions of Michael changed at all in the intervening years he was away in India? In chapter six Violet Bridgerton calls Michael a rascal and he responds, “It serves me well.” Comments on his true nature and his public persona.

9. I especially enjoyed that Michael acknowledged and appreciated Francesca’s acting as Earl in his stead. Certainly makes him more attractive to me! Comments.

10. And just when Michael thinks it might be good to be home, Francesca makes that bombshell statement, “I want a baby.” What a place to stop! Did you peek at the next line in Chapter 7 to see his reply?

Lisa Jo (lisajo85) | 35 comments 1. Is this your first time reading this book? If not, how long has it been since you’re read it; how many times have you done so?
First time! Actually my first Julia Quinn novel too.

2. Francesca Q1: What do you think of Francesca? Of her feeling like a “changeling” in her own family? Do you buy that she is totally oblivious to Michael’s attraction? Did her love of John blind her to that possibility? Or was it the easy going friendship amongst the three of them?
I really don't know what to make of Francesca...I like her, but it's odd reading about her love for John in a novel that is supposed to be about her romance with Michael. I think she is oblivious to Michael's feelings because of her single-minded devotion to John. The only way she could see Michael was as a friend.

3. This book, more than the others in the Bridgerton series, is a little sadder and darker; so many heartbreaking scenes. Was any one more heartbreaking than the others? Still, this story is one of my favorites in the series, as the rewards are so great in the end. Comments.
I don't think one scene in particular, because so much tragedy happens so quickly. I will say the way Michael and Francesca are quickly and brutally pulled apart was difficult to read. That last scene before he leaves for India was heartbreaking! It felt like all the tragedy and loss was thrown into that scene and neither character knew how to move on without the one common person they loved and lost.

I love Michael...mainly because I love a good tortured hero. And Michael is certainly tortured by his love for Francesca. I do believe it's love and not lust. I would think at this point Michael has had enough experience with women to know the difference. I hope! - - I liked that line too! Michael has a wicked sense of humor! lol

5. Michael Q2: Do you blame Michael for running off to India? Was he a coward? Or just too grief stricken? Too young? Was the Earldom too much for him? Was it his guilt for desiring Francesca? Her pain too agonizing? Or just knowing that her availability would be too much for him?
I don't blame Michael at all...mainly because I'm sure he felt overwhelmed with grief and guilt. I think in a way he had resigned himself to the fact that Francesa would always be married to John, who would always be the Earl. So I'm sure it was the worst kind of shock when John died and placed too much responsibility on him that he never anticipated.

6. Francesca Q2: What do you think about Francesca not replying to Michael’s letters?
I found it sad, but understandable. She was hurt and probably didn't know what to say. Or it could have been some sort of punishment to Michael for leaving.

Hmmmm...interesting question. I'm going to say that his absence for four years started to changed Francesca's view of his role in her life and the first time she saw him by the fireplace after his return is when she truly became aware of how attractive he was.

8. Michael Q3: Have you impressions of Michael changed at all in the intervening years he was away in India? In chapter six Violet Bridgerton calls Michael a rascal and he responds, “It serves me well.” Comments on his true nature and his public persona.
I really don't think he's changed, but I do think he is more at peace with everything that happened around the time of John's death.

9. I especially enjoyed that Michael acknowledged and appreciated Francesca’s acting as Earl in his stead. Certainly makes him more attractive to me! Comments.
It did for me too! I think he genuinely appreciated Francesca's work, but I also think it was part of his atonement and apology to her for leaving so suddenly at such a difficult time.

10. And just when Michael thinks it might be good to be home, Francesca makes that bombshell statement, “I want a baby.” What a place to stop! Did you peek at the next line in Chapter 7 to see his reply?
Yeah, I couldn't leave it at that! I had to read ahead!

#1 – Oh! How exciting. Usually JQ’s are lighter and fluffier than this one. But I do just love it. And I’m not big on angst. I hope you enjoy it, too.

#2 – Very true. A good portion takes place with her loving John. However, I think JQ gets away with it, where other authors can’t pull this off.

#3 – Yes, a lot of tragedy. For me, it was when Francesca found John and Michael came running, then them slid down to the floor. It still brings tears to my eyes, just thinking about it. I’ve read the book before (several times), so I know his sudden departure for India was imminent.

#4 – Totally agree with you! **hee hee**

#5 – Yes, I believe it was the shock and grief more than any question of maturity or cowardliness. That, and he felt he had to get away from an available Francesca.

#6 – Yes, she was oblivious to the facts.

#7 – Her becoming aware of Michael as a man is a “process” – but standing near him by the fireplace in her night clothes was the start! For sure.

#9 – Yes, it was a big responsibility to leave her with.

#10 – **hee hee** Me, too!

Did her love of John blind her to that possibility? Or was it the easy going friendship amongst the three of them?I like Francesca so far. As fro her feeling like a changeling in her own faily, she is very different than the rest of the Bridgerton's we've read about. She's more reserved and quiet. I don't think she's oblivious to Michael's feelings, but I don't think she knows how deep they go. I think she thinks he loves her like she loves him.

3. This book, more than the others in the Bridgerton series, is a little sadder and darker; so many heartbreaking scenes. Was any one more heartbreaking than the others? Still, this story is one of my favorites in the series, as the rewards are so great in the end. Comments. You know I LOVE angst, so I've been enjoying this immensely LOL When she went to his home and cried and told him she lost the baby and it would have been part his as well was heartbreaking for me. Poor Michael. What else could he have done but run? He was handed everything John had and now the woman he loved, who was John's, is telling him her baby would have been his.

4. Michael Q1: What do you think of Michael? What a dilemma of Camelot proportions, to love both John like a brother and lust after his cousin’s wife. I had to laugh, when Francesca was thinking of him matched with Eloise, over him “trying to compute the level of guilt one might feel for being in love with one’ cousin’s wife and one’s wife’s sister.” Do you feel he really is in love with Francesca right now, or is it just lust of the unattainable?I think he's in love with Francesca. That line was funny :)

5. Michael Q2: Do you blame Michael for running off to India? Was he a coward? Or just too grief stricken? Too young? Was the Earldom too much for him? Was it his guilt for desiring Francesca? Her pain too agonizing? Or just knowing that her availability would be too much for him? I don't blame him. I don't think he was a coward. I think he was overwhelmed by loosing John and getting all that was his. It was his way of dealing with grief

6. Francesca Q2: What do you think about Francesca not replying to Michael’s letters?
I was surprised. Lady Bridgerton would have never approved LOL I think her not replying was her way of dealing with the loss - she lost John and Michael.

I'm not sure. I wonder if she didn't know all along, but knew nothing could come of it cause she loved John.

8. Michael Q3: Have you impressions of Michael changed at all in the intervening years he was away in India? In chapter six Violet Bridgerton calls Michael a rascal and he responds, “It serves me well.” Comments on his true nature and his public persona.
I did catch that comment and wondered if he had changed while in India. I think he did and he's just letting his reputation "serve him well"

9. I especially enjoyed that Michael acknowledged and appreciated Francesca’s acting as Earl in his stead. Certainly makes him more attractive to me! Comments.I did like that he did that

10. And just when Michael thinks it might be good to be home, Francesca makes that bombshell statement, “I want a baby.” What a place to stop! Did you peek at the next line in Chapter 7 to see his reply? Can you believe it? I did not look at the next chapter LOL I turned of the Kindle and went to bed, only to be woken about 30 minutes later by screaming (Jenna and Nick were breaking up - Lisa Jo, Jenna is my 20 year old daughter and Nick her trashy boyfriend) So, I was up another 2 hours while she followed him to his mother's, they came back and got all his stuff and she sobbed like a baby. And through it all, she had a friend at the house who just sat there watched it all ??? I don't understand young people LOL

I'll start reading my section as soon as I get off here and I'll be back later with questions :) Have a great morning :)

#2 – Yes, she is much more quiet and reserved. This comes into play later.

#3 – Very sad; it made him feel the loss even more. And she was right; you know he would have helped in the raising of any child of John’s.

#6 – LOL! No, Violet would NOT approve. I’m assuming you’ve read further, so you know (view spoiler)

#7 – Knew that she was attracted to him? Or vice versa?

#8 – I think Michael was a true rake – until he met and fell in love with Francesca… then he became a “fake” rake.

#10 – No, I can’t believe you, of all people, didn’t peek. As to the rest… Whoa.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Susan's Questions for chapters 7-11

11. What did you think about the conversation between Francesca and her mother in the carriage. I sobbed like a baby.

12. Why do you think it never crossed Michael's mind to be her husband? He was upset that he'd have to witness men courting her, but never put himself in that picture.

13. Malaria. Do you like when authors use the nurse/patient plot to form the romance and deepen the couple's bond?

14. Violet seems to think something is going in between Francesca and michael. Do you think "the mothers" think likewise?

15. Oh! There was a moment of unspoken understanding - just like she had with John. Do you think she's starting to realize?

16. I think maybe Francesca's ball gown should have been green since she was so full of envy and jealousy at all the ladies paying attention to Michael and he to them. Did Sophie, Kate, and Eloise notice?

17. This book obviously takes place before Eloise's. In fact, it seems to be at the same time as Colin's. Do you like when authors show us another point of view of a time they'd already covered or do you want them to move forward?

Susan Gorman | 33 comments Hello- Just back from vacation. Sorry if I am a bit late....

1. Is this your first time reading this book? If not, how long has it been since you’re read it; how many times have you done so?
Read it several times. I like this Bridgerton because it's not like the other books in the series. It's bit more serious.
2. Francesca Q1: What do you think of Francesca? Of her feeling like a “changeling” in her own family? Do you buy that she is totally oblivious to Michael’s attraction? Did her love of John blind her to that possibility? Or was it the easy going friendship amongst the three of them?
I like Francesca. Francesca is quiet and reserved. She found her soul mate when she married John. I think she knows that Michael is attracted to her and I think on some level she is attracted to him.

3. This book, more than the others in the Bridgerton series, is a little sadder and darker; so many heartbreaking scenes. Was any one more heartbreaking than the others? Still, this story is one of my favorites in the series, as the rewards are so great in the end.
It's definitely a departure from JQ's other novels. So much loss. I think the scenes where Franny finds John and when she miscarries the baby are well written.
I feel that Michael is in love with her.

5. Michael Q2: Do you blame Michael for running off to India? Was he a coward? Or just too grief stricken? Too young? Was the Earldom too much for him? Was it his guilt for desiring Francesca? Her pain too agonizing? Or just knowing that her availability would be too much for him?
He was overwhelmed and a bit guilty with regards to his feeling about Francesca.

6. Francesca Q2: What do you think about Francesca not replying to Michael’s letters?
I think at first she was overcome with grief, then she may have felt guilty for not answering them.

I think she was aware of Michael as a man when she would ask him to tell her something "wicked" early on in the story. She certainly became aware of him by the fireplace!!

8. Michael Q3: Have you impressions of Michael changed at all in the intervening years he was away in India? In chapter six Violet Bridgerton calls Michael a rascal and he responds, “It serves me well.” Comments on his true nature and his public persona.
I think he matured while he was away. I think his comment to Violet was what was expected of him. I don't think he was truely a rake while away.

9. I especially enjoyed that Michael acknowledged and appreciated Francesca’s acting as Earl in his stead. Certainly makes him more attractive to me!
Agreed.

10. And just when Michael thinks it might be good to be home, Francesca makes that bombshell statement, “I want a baby.” What a place to stop! Did you peek at the next line in Chapter 7 to see his reply?
Of course!!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I finished last night, too, Lisa Jo. I couldn't hold out any longer.

I'm not feeling great tonight, so I'll get back to you all tomorrow. Love Susan's DQ's and what I've read of the answers so far.

Lisa Jo (lisajo85) | 35 comments 11. What did you think about the conversation between Francesca and her mother in the carriage. I sobbed like a baby.
It didn't make me cry, but I did find it very touching. It shows how circumstances and love affects everyone differently. It made me wonder if Violet hadn't had eight children if she would have been doing exactly what Francesca was doing...looking for a husband so she could have a child. But what I loved most was how honest and understanding Violet was with Francesca. It was a great moment.

12. Why do you think it never crossed Michael's mind to be her husband? He was upset that he'd have to witness men courting her, but never put himself in that picture.
I never doubted that he always saw marriage to Francesca as a betrayal to John and his memory. I can completely understand why he would always see her as 'off-limits' because of that.

13. Malaria. Do you like when authors use the nurse/patient plot to form the romance and deepen the couple's bond?
Actually, I do. I know in reality it may not be so romantic, but I think there is something very telling about seeing a person at their worst. If you can't or don't want to turn away from a person after seeing them in such a state, it shows how strong the bond truly is. Francesca could have had one of Michael's servants watch over him and care for him, but the fact that she wanted to do it herself says a lot about her character and her feelings towards Michael.

14. Violet seems to think something is going in between Francesca and michael. Do you think "the mothers" think likewise?
I think the mothers always suspect! lol They seem to know so much more than anyone else. But yes, Quinn made it pretty clear that they were noticeably staring at each other when they were in the same room...I think everyone had to suspect a change between these two.

15. Oh! There was a moment of unspoken understanding - just like she had with John. Do you think she's starting to realize?
That she is developing the similar feelings for him that she had for John? I'm not sure...I think at this point it would have confused her even more. I really don't think she understood her developing feelings toward Michael until the end. I think she also might have attributed their unspoken understanding to the strength of their friendship.

16. I think maybe Francesca's ball gown should have been green since she was so full of envy and jealousy at all the ladies paying attention to Michael and he to them. Did Sophie, Kate, and Eloise notice?
I definitely think they suspected something. I mean when Francesca wouldn't go talk to Michael at the ball, Eloise called her a coward. I don't think she would have said that if she knew for certain Michael and Francesca were just friends.

17. This book obviously takes place before Eloise's. In fact, it seems to be at the same time as Colin's. Do you like when authors show us another point of view of a time they'd already covered or do you want them to move forward?
This is my first book in this series, so I can't comment on this particular situation. But, if it's done right, yes I do like a different viewpoint of a time period already covered in a previous novel. It just gives you more background information so when you re-read, you notice other details and have more information to enjoy the story even more.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Lisa Jo, I'm fine with waiting for you to post the next set of questions :) And I agree with you about the author revisiting a time period they've already written about. I love seeing the same situations from different perspectives :)

Lisa Jo (lisajo85) | 35 comments Okay, this is my first shot at writing discussion questions, so be gentle! lol

18. What did everyone think of the discussion between Colin and Michael? Forgive me if this was revealed in a prior novel, but didn't it seem obvious Colin was aware of Michael's feelings for Francesca? How do you think he knew?

19. I love when the hero saves the damsel in distress! While Francesca wasn't in grave peril when her walk with Sir Geoffrey became too intimate, do you think Michael was right to interfere?

20. Chapter 13 had their first kiss...was it everything you expected?

21. What do you think was the main reason behind Francesca running away? Was she running away from Michael?? From her feelings?? Or something else??

22. In Michael's 2nd conversation with Colin, he realizes how strongly he wants to marry Francesca and made plans to make it happen. What do you think finally changed his mind? What it something Colin said or did he finally stop resisting his conscience?

23. I loved seeing Michael so nervous during his first proposal to Francesca! It was adorable, especially for someone who finds it very difficult to be embarrassed around women. What did everyone else think? Do you think part of the nervousness was because he knew she would say 'no' the first time?

24. And of course Michael pulls out all the stops when he finally seduces Francesca...do you think he should have waited for Francesca to come to him more willingly? Or was all the talk of his past 'wickedness' the only way to finally push Francesca and make her see how much she desired him? Or maybe you believe either way they were destined to be together? :-)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Lisa Jo, great questions!!!!

18. What did everyone think of the discussion between Colin and Michael? Forgive me if this was revealed in a prior novel, but didn't it seem obvious Colin was aware of Michael's feelings for Francesca? How do you think he knew? I liked that Colin told him to marry her! This meeting, nor how he knew(and yes, I got that impression too), were discussed before. I'm guessing Colin figured it out cause of Michael's defense of her honor

19. I love when the hero saves the damsel in distress! While Francesca wasn't in grave peril when her walk with Sir Geoffrey became too intimate, do you think Michael was right to interfere? I think he was. I think he would have stepped in for any lady in that situation, but it was all the more sweet cause it was Frannie.

20. Chapter 13 had their first kiss...was it everything you expected? YES!!

21. What do you think was the main reason behind Francesca running away? Was she running away from Michael?? From her feelings?? Or something else?? I think it was her feelings she was running from.

22. In Michael's 2nd conversation with Colin, he realizes how strongly he wants to marry Francesca and made plans to make it happen. What do you think finally changed his mind? What it something Colin said or did he finally stop resisting his conscience? I think he decided to go for it cause he was finally going to try for what he really wanted.

23. I loved seeing Michael so nervous during his first proposal to Francesca! It was adorable, especially for someone who finds it very difficult to be embarrassed around women. What did everyone else think? Do you think part of the nervousness was because he knew she would say 'no' the first time? I loved seeing him nervous! I do think it was cause he was afraid she'd say no, but may e he was also nervous about putting himself out there and her learning of his true feelings

:-) OMG that was hot!! I think he was right in doing it that way. Francesca would have tried to talk herself out of it otherwise.

11. What did you think about the conversation between Francesca and her mother in the carriage? I sobbed like a baby.
I didn’t cry, but I teared up. Violet is a wonderful person; a gentle soul. I just love her.

12. Why do you think it never crossed Michael's mind to be her husband? He was upset that he'd have to witness men courting her, but never put himself in that picture.
LOL! That scene was funny. Love Colin. I think Michael just didn’t ‘go there’ – he couldn’t. It fit with his whole ‘hands off’ with regards to Francesca.

13. Malaria. Do you like when authors use the nurse/patient plot to form the romance and deepen the couple's bond?
No. I think this was a very real issue of the day.

14. Violet seems to think something is going in between Francesca and Michael. Do you think "the mothers" think likewise?
Oh, I don’t even know if Violet thought this. I think she was just trying to nudge Francesca in that direction.

15. Oh! There was a moment of unspoken understanding - just like she had with John. Do you think she's starting to realize?
Definitely!

16. I think maybe Francesca's ball gown should have been green since she was so full of envy and jealousy at all the ladies paying attention to Michael and he to them. Did Sophie, Kate, and Eloise notice?
LOL! You are bad. I think they notice everything.

17. This book obviously takes place before Eloise's. In fact, it seems to be at the same time as Colin's. Do you like when authors show us another point of view of a time they'd already covered or do you want them to move forward?
No, I love it, if the author can pull it off. JQ obviously can.

Okay, this is my first shot at writing discussion questions, so be gentle! lol
Great job, Lisa Jo!

18. What did everyone think of the discussion between Colin and Michael? Forgive me if this was revealed in a prior novel, but didn't it seem obvious Colin was aware of Michael's feelings for Francesca? How do you think he knew?
I don’t think it was in the other novels. I think Colin is just much more observant than his other brothers in that regard. He is an observer of life and people reactions to it.

19. I love when the hero saves the damsel in distress! While Francesca wasn't in grave peril when her walk with Sir Geoffrey became too intimate, do you think Michael was right to interfere?
I agree with Susan; Michael would have done the same for any lady.

20. Chapter 13 had their first kiss...was it everything you expected?
Yes, loved it. It was wonderful.

21. What do you think was the main reason behind Francesca running away? Was she running away from Michael?? From her feelings?? Or something else??
I think it is all a process for her. Even though it has been four years, it is still hard for her to let go. I think her desires overwhelmed her. I don’t think she was expecting to feel the passion and love she felt. Very scary.

22. In Michael's 2nd conversation with Colin, he realizes how strongly he wants to marry Francesca and made plans to make it happen. What do you think finally changed his mind? What it something Colin said or did he finally stop resisting his conscience?
Again, same thing with Michael; it is a process. He is finally realizing that it is okay to go after what he has always wanted.

23. I loved seeing Michael so nervous during his first proposal to Francesca! It was adorable, especially for someone who finds it very difficult to be embarrassed around women. What did everyone else think? Do you think part of the nervousness was because he knew she would say 'no' the first time?
Loved that scene. So well done. And you have a good point, Lisa Jo; it makes it better because of Michael’s prior dealings with women.

Oh, I think he wanted to show her how really wicked he could be. I thought it was great. LOL! And I agree with Susan; Frannie needed to be pushed into it a bit. Plus, it made it very H.O.T.

Lisa Jo (lisajo85) | 35 comments Lisa Kay wrote: "#14 - LOL! You're probably right and I am wrong."

Ha! I'm not usually right, so don't bet on it!

I've read a lot of historicals where the mother knew her child was in love before they did! lol Mother's always seem to know best!

Lisa Jo (lisajo85) | 35 comments Susan (susayq) wrote: "OMG that was hot!! I think he was right in doing it that way. Francesca would have tried to talk herself out of it otherwise. "

I know! There was so much angst and then all of a sudden...yowza! It was very sexy. I agree though, Francesca had to be pushed...she was too afraid otherwise.

I agree...she was completely convinced John was the only man she would ever love. Falling in love with Michael must have been scary!
