Michael (the_smoking_gnu) | 178 comments I guess the title says it all.
"Äkta människor" (Real Humans) is a Swedish TV series.
It is best described as Black Mirror (S02E01 "Be Right Back") meets Caprica meets Star Trek TNG (S02E06 "The Schizoid Man", S02E09 "The Measure of a Man", etc).

"The story takes place in Sweden present time in a parallel universe, where the use of consumer-level androids is becoming more prevalent. The androids, known as hubots, are used as servants, workers, and company, but some have started to develop feelings and their own goals as their programming has become more advanced and manipulated. While some people embrace this new technology, others are frightened by what can happen when humans are replaced as workers, company, parents, and even lovers."

Added bonus, Kåre Hedebrant aka Oskar from "Låt den rätte komma in" (Let the Right One In). It's one of my favourite movies and I really don't like vampire movies.

Beware, as always the trailer contains plot spoilers:

Brandt Fun to see a swedish TV-series recommended in here :)
I haven't heard of it, I'll check it out..

Normally danish and swedish tvchannels only have the courage to make crime-series (and talent-competition/reality-tv trash for all the idiots out there), so this is pretty refreshing :)

I'm a big fan of "The West Wing" and "Yes, (Prime) Minister" so I quite enjoyed "Borgen".
"Forbrydelsen" was much better than the American remake "The Killing". I enjoyed the political aspect of it.
It's a pity that they focus so much on crime-series, but these are much better than anything produced in Germany.

Brandt I actually haven't watched most of the newer danish tv-shows, since the danish tv-channels have been on my sh*t-list for some time now..
I prefer to just browse IMDB for shows that look interesting, and then download them.
If you are on the look-out for danish tv-series with a lot of quality, i recommend you go classic and try out Matador :) it´s a bit old, but historically/culturally its a really great series of a town in Denmark during the german occupation.. Really classic stuff, it gets rerun almost every other year on danish tv.. :P

Ive been watching quite a bit of german tv lately, in order to improve my german, and that seems to be nothing but crime series as well, the best is almost the dubbed stuff and the debate shows :P
I probably don't have the best german channels on my cable though..

Is there any german series you can recommend?
Preferable something sci-fi or fantasy, but anything with a bit of humour and some interesting characters will do really..

The same thing applies to me and German TV-channels. :D
There are only two shows on German TV which I watch regularly, "heute show" (zdf) which is a clone of "The Daily Show" and "Die Harald Schmidt Show" which is our version of Letterman.
"Die Harald Schmidt Show" has moved to a pay per view channel but it's available on the internet if you know where to look.
My favourite German TV show of all time is "Ein Herz und eine Seele" which is a remake of the British show "Till Death Us Do Part".
I mainly watch political satire on German TV.
I guess the only noteworthy German contributions to sci-fi or fantasy are "Welt am Draht" and "Raumpatrouille Orion".
Germans like to watch their "Tatort" on Sunday evening. A habit which I have never understood.
If you are interested in life in the GDR I can recommend "Der Turm".
Our family tradition on Christmas:
"Familie Heinz Becker" and "Loriot - Weihnachten bei Hoppenstedts"
My favourite German movie: "Schtonk"

Thank you! Non-U.S. programming suggestions always appreciated.

Chris (lostinabookgr) | 2 comments For another recommendation of non-English SF, I just watched the French Les Revenants season 1, based on the movie of the same name. A different take on zombies, and the scenery is amazing. A US remake is in the works (or 2), so best to watch the original before its ruined.
