Can't wait to hear the title when you get it; think I'll have to read this one. I, too, love bodice rippers!
Oh god, please, not another book hunt..(And by no, I mean, thankyou!) :D That sounds like Jane Eyre gone wrong!
Jane Eyre the way it SHOULD HAVE BEEN! ;D
For some reason, it's sounding familiar to me, too. I'll poke around.

I see all of these Pride and Prejudice knockoffs, why hasn't anyone rewritten this? Oh, right, there's no real way of keeping the storyline by destroying the unpleasantry that makes it barely tolerable? :o

Do you have any idea when it was published, at all? Or any of the character names?

I took the liberty of moving this book search to the new forum section we have:
Bodice Ripper Lost & Found
, as a means to gain more interest and an easier alternative to find your long, lost treasure. =D

This list might be of help, maybe...

P.S. I took the liberty of posting your book search on Amazon's Romance forum as well:

Lucy Tiversley believed her unruly red hair, freckles, outspoken nature, and lack of fortune removed her from the Marriage Mart. She thus decided her diverse education could land her a position as a governess.
Unfortunately she also landed in a somewhat compromising position with her new employer, Alexander Came, Seventh Earl of Sheldon. That gentleman vowed to protect her reputation and marry her immediately.
The outrage! How dare this vile snake decide her future. But when the rakish, unflappable Alex made up his mind, not even strong-minded Lucy could change it. Their union was considered the mismatch of the ton--but no one dreamed it might become a match made in Heaven!

Eh, hero doesn't have any kids in Lily. Lily is a maid...and it takes a while for them to sleep together, when they do it's consensual.
But I would recommend it. That's a great book.

There was another suggestion on Amazon:
readerland says:
Honor Reclaimed by Kathleen Reagan
I was thinking you were referring to this book. I got it free yesterday. It's not a rec from me, by any means, because of the train-wreckedness of it all. It does fit this theme, though.
H wife dies, leave 3 kids. h is wife's 17-yr old sister who comes to see H 3 days after death to pay respects (plus see H whom she's loved since he married her sis). H has been drunk the whole 3 days and mistakes sis (h) as his wife and rapes her. H is quite older (1st child close in age to h). H, to save h's reputation, marries her pretty quickly - she ends up preggers. H grows to love her. I"m 40% in and can"t stop reading it...writing is very rushed. So much happens in 1st chapter.

A DEVIL'S CHOICE
Heather Wade faced a thoroughly devilish dilemma when she heard the astounding proposal of the wealthy and notorious Sir Leslie Kinwell. This man who had brutishly dishonored her virtue now calmly announced she was to become his wife.
If she refused, she would be sent from Kinwell's castle -- to be cast alone, penniless, and shamed on the streets of London. If she accepted, she would be bound in marriage to a man she could only despise as an unqualified monster of depravity.
Heather was an innocent no longer, but she still had ever so much to learn about the ways of men and the world --and her own proud and perplexed young heart...
P.S. She was hired (she thought. to be a "proper" companion) and is taken to his house. He comes to her room in the dark, thinking she's the hooker he ordered. When he realizes his mistake, he forces her to marry him.

I tend to give more weight to reviews here on Goodreads, but the rating is also not very high here. This is one I may have to judge for myself. Not sure if it's bad writing or people just horribly offended by the content. Thanks for posting this find :)

I think one of the neg reviewers on AMZN cal the H a "brute." I got the feeling that that individual was "offended."

When it comes to BRs I don't let the negative reviews sway me. I mean, two of my favorite BRs, Island Flame & Sea Fire, have many negative reviews and I love them! By the way they are about the same couple.

Neg reviews can also help to determine if a title is a potential BR! Esp if people are offended!

LOL, so true. I LOOK for the negative reviews on older books that could be BRs.

I try to by used copies. First I try thriftbooks.com; the I try AMZN for used copies. Thriftbooks is slightly cheaper and if you order several book from the same thriftbooks vendor (used book dealers sell from the TB site in the same way at AMZN , but no discount at AMZN. Third, you can try Alibris.com for used copies.
Oh, don't forget to check the kindle store too. I just bought two old BR titles that were published in the 80s for kindle ($3.99).
However, the kindle store search engine is tricky. I could not pull up these two books in the kindle store by title. I had to search the kindle store by author and find the books I was seeking that way. I knew in advance that they were available in kindle, so I kept poking around till I found em.

Right from the first couple of chapters you get right into the premise of the story:
Hero - widower? must hire governess for daughters/children, drinking lots etc, brother/friend arranges for wench?/prostitute? to help him get over his grief?
heroine - a lady on hard times must earn money to support family?, destitute, takes job as governess
h arrives while H drunk, H overcome with 'wench's' beauty and takes her (unknowingly that this is his governess)in his drunken state takes her virginity, sobers realizes his error, weds wench/governess, falls in love with her, HEA
First time posting, hope I did okay!
