Lily (joy1) | 749 comments I didn't get a copy of our book until last night. Thank goodness it is very short. But I'm not going to try to put up much up here.

Lily (joy1) | 749 comments I was surprised to learn that her When the Emperor Was Divine is currently being used in classrooms. Much like to To Kill a Mockingbird.

An interesting short blurb about her and that book is here:

Lily (joy1) | 749 comments There are two entries for her book here on goodreads, one the initial one I used for this page, and the one I just found when looking for When the Emperor...

Note the difference in spelling for "Buddha"

I think I have now updated so the selection spelled "Buddha" is the key one. There will still be some remnants of "Buddah" hanging around. (5/17/2013

I did a Google search.... all sources I found stated that after the camps were closed, most returned to their previous communities.

Here's a link to an interesting article that discusses Japanese immigration & prejudices even prior to WW2. Also lists location of camps (most were in CA) and tells of reparations made by the US government to survivors of the camps in the late 80's, which I wasn't aware of.

Lily (joy1) | 749 comments Our book led to a far-ranging discussion today on both the experiences of these Japanese women and on analogies with current issues in U.S. society.

Side discussions included ones on women and heart attacks and on treatment of transgender in our society.

C. is believed to have the records/knowledge re. future reads and D. will contact her.

It felt good for many of us to be together after several months of scattered directions in our lives.
