Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11204 comments 30.2 - DLMRose's task: Behind the Name
Let's explore the meanings and origins of names. Using Behind the Name, select a name and enter it into “Search for Names.” On the name page click on “Show Family Tree” (on the RIGHT in the Related Names section).

Book 1: Read a book by a male author with a first name on that tree. The name should be in a blue box.

Book 2: From the same Name Family Tree as book 1, read a book by a female author with a first name on that tree. The name should be in a pink box.

Example - James to James Tree- Family of Yaakov
Book 1 could be by a male author with the first name James, Jacob, Jake, Jacques, Hamish ...
Book 2 could be by a female author with the first name Jacqueline, Jaye, Jamie, Mina....

The name you select must have male and female variations- not every name does. The authors' names must match the name tree name exactly- no spelling variations

Required: Please state the starting point name you used when you post.

Thanks, I know what you mean. I've spent way too much time watching the state-by-state animations

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments seriously...lol!

I'm trying to figure out which books I need to read for reviews and then looking to see if I can find a matching male/female author

message 11: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments I have a question for you DLMRose - I'm looking at using Marianne for my female name and trying to find a male name (which there are a few of) - what if the family tree has surname indicated underneath, or diminutive...can I still use?

Diminutives and surnames work as long as they specify the gender like Marion (m)

message 13: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments figured - thanks - it was hard finding a male Marion, but I succeeded ;)

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments If I use The Boyfriend by Thomas Perry then Could I use The Embroiderer's Story: Needlework from the Renaissance to the Present Day by Thomasina Beck for book 2?
I think if I'm doing this correctly, Thomasina is a female variant of Thomas.

message 26: by Robin (Saturndoo) (last edited Jun 02, 2013 09:46PM) (new)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) I used my own name-Robin

Since it is a unisex name some of the boxes have m/f in them. Therefore I used Robin as the male and Robyn has the female. Or can I use the "Robin" for both male and female?

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Thanks Dlmrose!!☺

yes
The only page restriction is on books with the genre Children

message 32: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty | 85 comments hi for this task i started with the name john and used the names john and jane. I chose and have already read the lord of the rings for John and am now starting Pride and Prejudice for Jane. I was just browsing the goodreads page for this book and noticed one of the genres was academic:school. Can someone please confirm that I can read this?! I would not have classed it as a kids book but I want to be sure it will be accepted. Thanks x

message 33: by Bea (new)

Bea Kirsty, the main page of the edition that you linked to does not show either KIDS or CHILDREN as a genre. I am not a moderator or task creator, but I would say you are OK.

Kirsty wrote: "hi for this task i started with the name john and used the names john and jane. I chose and have already read the lord of the rings for John and am now starting Pride and Prejudice for Jane. I was ..."

The Goodreads author name for The Lord of the Rings is J.R.R. Tolkien.
To determine if a book fits a task moderators will rely on Goodreads’ main book page for information such as title, author name(s), Goodreads author status, page number, ratings, etc.
So the author's name is not John for the purposes of this task. The name would have to appear as John on the Goodreads record. I hope you can find another task for that book

For Pride and Prejudice, Bea is correct. The genre school is not the same as Children or Kids. That book and author would work for Jane

message 35: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty | 85 comments Thanks for the response. Can I argue that when going into the authors goodreads page his full name is stated there as John Ronald Reuel Tolkien?

The only name that matters to the moderators is J.R.R. Tolkien

JC (jmnc) | 638 comments Choosing books for this task was sort of a brain-burner for me, so I want to make sure my books are ok before I read them, which will be coming up soon. I chose JOHN and will read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, then JANET and will read The Husband List by Janet Evanovich and Dorien Kelly - is two authors ok for this second one?

Yes, one co-author with the name works

John and Janet are fine

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) I read this book Grave Mercy for the female name of Robin. On the book the author's name is spelled out as Robin LaFevers BUT on GR her author name/profile is R.L.LaFevers. Can I still use this book for this task?

Sorry, the name must appear on the Goodreads record. Since she is a Goodreads author she has control over how her name appears (and how odd that she wouldn't want it to match what appears on her books)

Drats!!! OK, I was hoping that since her name "Robin" is clearly written on the cover of the book that it would work. Yes, you would think that she would want it to match but this is a perfect example of why I detest that GR records are strictly used instead of what is on the actual book.
