Okay thanks for your help! I like Lee-Zull better!

I jumped to the Sound of Music character's pronunciation as well.

Suzie If I had never watched The Sound of Music then yes I would have because German is a little confusing to me so dont feel bad

Say it like "Diesel."

Theresa Let google translate read it to you. That's how I usually learn how to pronounce english names

Nicole I also had trouble pronouncing her name. I just stuck with lee-sell

My name is Liesl. (pronounced the same but spelled differently. It's actually spelled the way they spelled it in the Sound of Music) and whenever people have trouble pronouncing it, I tell them that it sounds exactly like the petrol Diesel but starts with an L. Or if I married Vin Diesel...and so the joke goes.

However, the name is a diminutive of the Austrian/German Elisabeth. It's like "Lisa" but is a bit old-fashioned these days; akin to "Heidi" or "Gretl". Additionally, the proper pronunciation does not really stress the "-zull" sound in the second syllable so much as swallows it. The last sound is meant to be less stressed than the first and I notice that English-speakers tend to stress both equally or give the second too much emphasis. Either way, I've had to get used to very few people saying my name correctly and only learned to love it when I knew what it sounded like when said properly.

Anyway, just some fun factoids.

Happy reading! (Loved the book)

Thank you, Tirzah! I feel the same about your name, coincidentally.

message 15: by Ruth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruth I always said it like Lee-Sull, but it makes more sense for it to be Lee-Zull

Maya Lee-Sol

message 17: by Nick (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nick It is like Diesel with L instead of D. I'm German, pretty sure that's right... :D
