Hajar Y, (quillandkindle) | 19 comments I often take a substantial amount of time to decide which book I'm going to read next. I'm certain that, at one time or another, all of you must have experienced the same situation as well.

So my question is, How did you end up choosing your books, anyway? Did you:
(a) list down the books that you intend to tackle within a particular month?
(b) consult the Oracle? (I mean, the TBR Jar!)
(c) embrace spontaneity and just grab whatever you feel like reading?

Atikah (Oh, Hello Books!) (_ohhellobooks) | 2 comments This is a great topic to discuss. For me, I sometimes go to my to-read list on Goodreads (specifically with books that I own) and sort it by average rating. I'll pick the book that has the highest rating. :-)

message 3: by Shahirah (new)

Shahirah Loqman (bookloves_) I have various ways of choosing my next book to read:

1. depending on the highest number of recommendations i get from people of a certain book (which is why i love showcasing my TBR on instagram, it always attract lots of comments)
2. Whatever suits my fancy at the time (sometimes I like light reads, sometimes I want to invest in something heavier)
3. whatever's been in my pile the longest! haha

As for me, I just go along with whatever I feel like reading. Haha!

message 5: by Azbaqiyah (new)

Azbaqiyah I already make my own reading list this year. So there won't be a problem for me to choose a book to read. Unlike last year, I totaly lost!

What happen to the ones with less favourable ratings, then? Do you change the rule the next time you do the raffle?

Shahirah wrote: "3. whatever's been in my pile the longest! haha"
I like this one as leaving books unread always make me feel guilty. Perhaps it's something I can implement, say, once per month. Certainly a great way for a person to reduce their mile long TBR pile!

-------------------

Monthly reading list is a must for me. I don't abide to it 100%, of course, but I like the idea where I roughly know what I'll be reading and to make sure that my selection varies (in term of genre) within the said month. To be honest, I truly admire those that can choose whatever they feel like reading. I'd be lost if I am in your shoes, hah!

message 7: by Syaza ♡ (new)

Syaza ♡ (azays) | 7 comments usually, it depends on my mood, i just read whatever books that i like to read atm, sometimes after i finished reading some dystopian/action/angst stuff, i'd go for the contemporary ones so i can keep myself sane lol

but recently i just got myself a tbr jar! (YAY) and i've already read 2 books, chosen from the jar, because i have like this huge pile of unread books, it's ridiculous, and i really need to read all of them so what's a better way than to make a tbr jar (lets see how long i can keep up with this tho)

haha shy i don't think it's something admirable when we we're just too lazy to go through the notion of choosing, and just choose whatever we set our eyes on xD

Syaza wrote: "so what's a better way than to make a tbr jar (lets see how long i can keep up with this tho) "

syaza i have tried TBR jar but it only lasted a few weeks hahaha. i find the books i pull out a bit disappointing and not what i was hoping for ><

message 9: by Badrul (new)

Badrul Hisyam (badrulhisyam) | 3 comments I choose randomly of what I want to read but under this criteria:

Save the thickest for the last. Hahahah.

oh really? so far the titles that i got were okay, although when the first book that i chose was not what i had expected so i drew another one lol and then i considered that as the first book from my tbr jar hahaha but i have a feeling that i'm not going to last long sigh

message 11: by Najwa (new)

Najwa | naj.reads (najreads) | 15 comments As for me I would go for the most recommended book by people. Coz I'm totally missing out right now, I haven't read tons of book you people have so yeah haha

message 12: by Rizal (new)

Rizal (rizal_wolf) | 9 comments Most of the time I just pick up randomly and start reading 1st 5 pages or so and if that book pull me in, then i will read it. Depending on my mood and interest too. :P If im in reading slump, i will pick up children books or graphic novels, that really helps me out.

It all depends on my mood really! Which is why I never do tbr videos on booktube. I then feel like I'm pressured to read it which will make me not want to read it. So it depends what kind of book I feel like reading and then I'll start reading the first few pages first to see if its the right book for me at the time or not :)

Syaza, i think so long u keep an open mind of the books you get, you'll be alright! i had specific titles I aimed, and that does not work with the 'luck' factor that comes in using a TBR haha

message 15: by lisa (new)

lisa (anabelsbrother) oh god. every new year I'd be like "I'll make a TBR list and stick with it jyeah" but hampeh. most of the time I'd just pick up something that tickles my fancy, although I'm usually guilty of picking and reading new releases instantly and neglecting the ones that's been on my mental list for so long.

I've been saying I need a TBR jar forever but I still haven't made one until now. I'm too lazy lmao

One of my friends even have spreadsheets of books in her TBR, which sounds totally crazy to me

I own one as well but I specifically use it to choose a book among Pulitzer/Booker/Hugo winners or nominees. The system seems to be working OK so far and since I'm aiming for something specific, it seems to suit its purpose.

Badrul wrote: "Save the thickest for the last. Hahahah."

Why last though?

Nabilah wrote: "...then I'll start reading the first few pages first to see if it's the right book for me at the time or not :) "

That is a good habit to practice, imho. I also use it whenever I intend to purchase a new book. Certainly work better than relying on ratings and reviews.

Lisa wrote: "...One of my friends even have spreadsheets of books in her TBR, which sounds totally crazy to me "

OK, I've a confession to make: I do record my reading/book related stuffs in a spreadsheet :P

message 17: by Regina (new)

Regina Foo (reginafoomy) | 14 comments I'm more like a (c). And since I'm a polygamist, I tend to put down a book I'm reading and pick up another one based on my mood.

message 24: by Arfa (new)

Kim Arfa (kimarfa) | 3 comments oh my, i have to say that evertime i look at my tbr pile, i cry internally. but as a 16y/o girl who's going to take spm next year, i try to chunk down my tbr pile by listing the books, more like doing a list on "tbr priorities."

i prioritise books that have good rating and also recommendations from booktubers :)

but sometimes i just look at my tbr pile and just let my heart decide on which book to read next lol

(C) definitely definitely pick books according to what i want to read first and my mood. Hahahahhaha.

message 26: by Qofarudin Wahab (new)

Qofarudin Wahab | 1 comments Lately I've been picking books from my uni library instead of from my shelf.

I usually don't have problem to choose my next read cuz I just read whatever that I can get my hands on.

That's how I managed to encounter Kazuo Ishiguro and Edogawa Rampo.

I feel like it's such a shame if I miss out on all the books in my uni library by the time I graduate. Hence that's why my tbr books in my own book shelf has been collecting dust instead.

I will just choose based on my mood but my current read, which is Aristotle & Dante Discovers the Secrets of the Universe is based on a random name generator. HAHAHAHHA
