I'm skimming the comments here just because there are so many!

While I was away, I got somewhat caught up with Josh's work. I read Butterfly, while at the meet, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Now I've only got one left before I'm all caught up!

I followed Butterfly up with one of JCP's older works Sleepwalker.

If I'd known Sleepwalker was about a guy with seizures, I would have read it years ago! Seriously. I love reading about characters like me. And the scary fact is, reading this book, I realized that yes, twice in my life I have sleepwalked like he did. Though thankfully my brain simply had me turn off the shower, get out, and go to bed rather than putting my keys in the microwave or something equally strange.

I added this months reads to my currently reading shelf just now, and I keep remembering all these other books I need to get through, for different book groups and for my summer reading list. So many!

I should have been proactive yesterday and instead of watching The Desolation of Smaug while knitting on the plane, I should have been listening to the audio of our BOM book this month, Gatsby. Oh well.

So, right now, I'm not sure what I'm going to read next. It was going to be Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, but then I remembered I have to read Howtown, so that might be next. I just don't know! lol.

I finished the third book of Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London/Peter Grant series and started the fourth, Broken Homes. These are the books that I'm listening to while reading. I'm enamored with the narrator, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. I'm not so fond of his American/Canadian voices, but his PC Grant is adorable. Actually, his "PC Grant" voice seems to be his own voice, based on other samples. I may have to buy something else just to have him read me to sleep.

I set my Dresden book aside while I finish this one. Too much of a shift between magic London and magic Chicago. ; )

I read the opening chapter of Death by Silver the book Sylvia listed in Ebook freebies. Will travel back to magic Victorian London after my Chicago journey.

KC | 4897 comments Read Rag and Bone Nava's last Henry Rios mystery and i thought it was one of the best in the series. More focus on Henry's life (the mystery not so mysterious this time), and more courtroom stuff, which i found intriguing, and despite some inevitable depressing happenings, it was somehow full of hope.

I love that series, it makes me want to travel to London :) and Kobna is great as Peter Grant. I just saw that #5 is coming out October 7 in Audio, pfft!

I started the audio of Gatsby last night during my travels. Jake G. Does a nice job narrating.

I then started Bradbury before bed. I'm not far into it, but I've got to say there are a lot of phrases and references I just barely get, so I'm wondering how teens today will get it. I put it on the school summer reading list this year. I think I'll switch it out next year for The Illustrated Man. I read that in HS, and vaguely remember liking it. Just found a copy recently for myself, so we'll see.

message 4909: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments Well if the teens don't get the references, then explain it to them. I read Martian Chronicle in high school and loved it. Of course that was 35 years ago.

I read Martian Chronicles last year. We read two of the stories in 9th grade but the teacher never told us where she copied them from. I loved them and was excited to find the book. But I'm still partial to those two out of the bunch.

There Will Come Soft Rains

The Fall of the House of Usher II

Were the two I liked.

Candice Frook (cefrook) | 374 comments Hi, y'all. How is everybody? I have a FABULOUS new rec for you. THE NEXT by RAFE HAZE. It's a WOW. Really original, very funny, wonderfully romantic. Heartbreaking in all good ways. You will love it.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I am reading Full Circle by Michael Thomas Ford. It is a really excellent story which I would classify as contemporary gay fiction. It follows the life of two gay men from their childhood living next door to each other, through to their adult lives. It has romantic aspects but I wouldn't describe it as a romance. I really like the way the book shows how events in the US in the sixties influenced and affected the lives of the two men and also a friend. Michael T. Ford is one of my favourite authors and I have had this book on my shelf for ages. I think this is going to be one of my favourites books of for this year.

Yes, I, too, liked The Hot Floor. Another m/m/m menage I really enjoyed was Jordan Castillo Price's The Starving Years.

I just finished reading Provoked and Beguiled by Joanna Chambers this weekend. Both were 5 star reads for me. I exchanged a few words with her in Bristol last week and she seems to be a very nice lady. :-)

I'm currently listening to Ethan, Who Loved Carter and The Great Gatsby (about 75% through both of them) and enjoying them both a lot.

I wasn't going to buy very many books in the UK Meet this year, but somehow I ended up with a handsome pile which is currently on my dinner table waiting to be read:

A Threefold Cord by Julie Bozza
The Valley of the Shadow of Death by Julie Bozza
Wight Mischief by J.L. Merrow
Lessons in Love by Charlie Cochrane
The Persistence of Memory by Jordan Castillo Price (this is going to be a re-read for me)
Forget Me Not by Jordan Castillo Price (another re-read)
The Fifth Son by Blaine D. Arden (with nice illustrations!)
Lying with Scorpions by Aleksandr Voinov (I loved the first book in this series)

I've been watching the show (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries) on Netflix the last couple of days, and really love it, and the first book in the series, Cocaine Blues, is available for Kindle (or was as of last night) for $.99, so I downloaded it & I'm going to give it a try.

Wow! That IS a great haul.

I was very careful to only buy books from authors I really wanted books from. Having to lug them (literally, as none of my baggage had wheels) on teh plane wasn't something I wanted to do. But I'm wicked happy with my mini haul, especially as I got some awesome people to sign my books!

If It Drives by L.A. Witt and Aleks Voinov
Skybound by Alek Voinov
The Persistence of Memory by JCP
Forget Me Not by JCP
The Fifth Son by Blaine and yes, it's got beautiful illustrations!!!

I've already read Skybound and The Fifth Son, but I don't have them in print, and they were a good excuse to get books signed!

I've never seen the series (although I've heard it's good) but I did like the books. They give a good insight into Australia's fairly recent past, and Phryne is an interesting character.

I devoured it, and then went back and re-read a couple of the earlier ones. I love LB Gregg's books, although I feel that the backstory is revealed too slowly: I always feel that I need to re-read straight away, now that I can understand the characters, to see the action and inter-action again with that knowledge. I'm not saying that I want to know everything up-front, not at all, but I find that I can't fully interpret some of the intense things which happen early in the books until I've finished them!

ttg | 305 comments Finished recently book 6 Psyched to Death of the Jamie Brodie Mysteries, and enjoyed it. It's a pretty easy-going cozy gay mystery series.

You can totally tell the author Meg Perry is a Lanyon fan. She's had multiple shout-outs to Adrien English (and his bookshop, since her series is set in LA) and this volume included another, a reference to a series a character was reading about a Shakespearean actor who solves mysteries written by a local bookshop owner. :-)

I just finished my first Donald Strachey, Death Trick. Not sure why I skipped over this series. I'd watched one of the movies, not sure which one since it's been awhile. Since I don't have Amazon Prime I ordered the DVDs of Shock to the System and Ice Blues to round up my order of Fair Game (along with a book for my classroom on phytoplankton, Ocean Sunlight: How Tiny Plants Feed the Seas).

It was great to meet the book versions of Donald and Timmy. Caveat, the Kindle/ebook formatting of this book is awful, random font size changes, line return errors, and at one point about ten paragraphs randomly repeated. And some funny typos ("heard" for "beard"). Sad, because that's off-putting unless you're pretty determined.

Reggie Read Machine Machine (Mongrel #3) by K.Z. Snow .

Loved It. Great wrap up to the series. The MC's are William and Fan from Mongrel. It was just perfect.

You can read book 2 first or not. The MC's from book 2 are introduced in Mongrel and the here again in Machine. I think this book could be read after Mongrel, if someone wanted to.

The world building was absorbing. The story reveals more about Fan and his history, who he is, his background. Their are some vibrant side characters brought in too. It also builds on William and Fans relationship. Very intense, very goooood!
