I just finished Sara Alva's Silent yesterday. Very, very highly recommended. This is a YA book that transcends categories. Check out some of the reviews (mine is among the least eloquent). It's an amazing story of very dark times, but one with the most truly shining messages of hope for us all that I've read.

Silent by Sara Alva

I second the recommendation, Karen.

Idamus I'm currently reading https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
It's very creepy, but so far it's good (39% on my Kindle)

Anne | 6816 comments I finished Shiny! yesterday. I almost didn't buy it because of the silly cover, but it is a cute little book. Less angsty than many of her stories, but still very Amy Lane. Which for me is a good thing :)

HJ | 3603 comments I've just finished a book by another new-to-me author, Indra Vaughn, The House on Hancock Hill, which was very good. I was drawn to it by its lovely cover: The House on Hancock Hill by Indra Vaughn , which meant I read the review and then tried a sample.

Can anyone recommend another by her?

I agree, Karen. The book before this one, Social Skills, first brought her to my attention. Both stories are excellent but quite different from each other.

I'm surprised I haven't heard of her before. I need to see if the library can purchase her work. Honestly, these two sound better than a lot of the small press LGBTQ teen books we have.

I have Silent on my TBR soon pile. I enjoyed Pura Vida and Social Skills. SS is set at UVA which is where I went to college. It gets extra cool points since I'm sure the author is a fellow Wahoo. :-)

HJ | 3603 comments I'll be interested to hear what you think of Homo Action Love Story! A tall tale, KC. I adore Ben Monopoli's first two books, The Cranberry Hush and The Painting of Porcupine City.

I loved Half Moon Chambers, and re-read Driftwood over the weekend. I'm halfway through a re-read of The Salisbury Key. Harper Fox is so good!!

I have this one on my iPad, but I haven't read it yet. Now when you are reading it, I want to read it as soon as possible. :-) I actually thought about it this weekend, but then I started reading Jordan Castillo Price's Forget Me Not. I LOVE LOVE LOVE both the Half Moon Chambers and The Salisbury Key! I LOVE LOVE LOVE them.

And funny thing about Half Moon Chambers — it feels a lot more than a book to me. It also feels like a painting. And I rarely see a book that way.

ETA: I mean, sometimes it's easy to imagine a book as a movie, but... anyway, I'm not sure if I'm making any sense... even to myself.

I think the tall tale was just that, and a fun read. When that is said, I liked both the Cranberry Hush and Porcupine City better, but that has more to do with my overall taste in books and not Monopoli's writing.

I liked The Cranberry Hush best, probably because the characters were nicer somehow and everything less...extraordinarily intense than in The Painting, but I'm really glad he wrote something that's more fun too. He's such a good writer.

I agree, so for me The Cranberry Hush is the best one, then the Painting of Porcupine City, and then the action hero tale. And I really look forward to what next, he is such a good writer and writes very different books. So who knows what his next thing could be :)

Question for those who read Manga and can read Italian.

I somehow, accidentally ordered a used copy of Mushishi volume 1 in Italian. Don't know how this happened since it was an international order and I don't read the language. But would anyone like this copy?

It's probably only been read once. It's in fantastic condition.

I don't really know what else to do with it.

message 4035: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments The first e-reader was a Nook, but I didn't buy many books back then. I borrowed most of them from the library. This was before my m/m addiction - now I buy more than I'll ever be able to read. :-D

message 4036: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments When I first bought my Kindle, I also started to read romance on a regular basis for the first time. I went sort of nuts going over many romances (all mainstream) that I had not read before. Most were from Penguin or other big 5/6 publishers. I remember when the price fixing happened and that the back list books from these authors all went up from 3-4.99ish to 7.99.

So I was reading heavily from the big six at the time.

I still read heavily, just from indy or small publishers and from Smashwords and ARE.

I just started reading Nothing Serious last night. The story is light and adorable. Very cute couple. However, the author has a tendency to explain in large paragraphs things I don't need to know. Thankfully, it's usually a whole paragraph I can skip over and not little things here and there that bug me. So, I can sort of over look this and still enjoy the cute story. It just needs some cutting, not necessarily any rewriting. So, maybe it would make a really good short story rather than the novella it currently is. lol.

But yes, I am enjoying the story over all.

I'm also reading Incarceron, which is a YA novel, first in a series. It's interesting, though I'm a bit confused about this prison that seems to be alive. People live there, they can drive vehicles, steal from each other, kill, have sex, whatever. And there seems to be two groups that live there. But one group sets up an ambush for the other, and when they kidnap someone, she acts like she doesn't know what's going on or where they're taking her. I don't get it.

I also wish the blurb was more forthcoming about the actual characters. We learn very early on that one of the prisoners is a supposedly murdered prince. Not that it's said outright, but it's pretty obvious. Like, smack you in the face obvious. I think it would have been better if we'd known going in that that's who he is. HE doesn't know who he is, and that's fine. But it bugs me when I'M sort of tricked along with the main character. Maybe it's just me that feels that way, I dunno.

Otherwise, it's pretty interesting.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I am finishing off Natural Predators by Neil Plakcy. I was trying to delay reading this until I travel to Hawaii but I wont be able to travel until next year so I decided to read it now. I have challenged myself this year to read a few of the series I have been hoarding so I am reading the Sweet Spot: The Petit Mort Stories and the Lost Shifter series by Stephani Hecht.

I read this too. I meant to read the follow-up but never got to it. It was probably one of the books I bought to decide whether or not it was suitable for my classroom. Eleven-year-olds are fond of dark fantasy and dystopias. It's been awhile, but I remember it making some weird sense at the time. Or so I believed. ; }

This Rainbow Book Fair is Dangerous! Just bought 7 Riptide books, including Glitterland, Sweet Young Thang by Anne Tennino, several of Aleks' works with LA Witt including Hostile Ground which officially comes out next month. Woot!

Also got a chance to meet Tere Michaels and to regret not knowing she was coming. I would have brought a book for her to sign if I had.
