Totally in agreement there!

So what is our challenge with this one? I can't remember how many books there are. Twelve? I think. So, two a month? Which gives us six months. Maybe start in May?

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Actually, there's only seven books. So, if we did six months, we could read one per month. Or choose four months and do two per month with one extra book and one extra month.

The Hansen challenge ends in April, so May could definitely work.

Do you think you will want BOM-books in addition to this challenge or are the Nava-books going to be the BOM-books?

I'm definitely interested in the Nava challenge. I bought them all around Christmas when they were 1.99 each and they're sitting there on my Nook--looking at me. (g)

I had a hard time keeping up with the BOM and the Brandstetter challenge. Not because it was too many books to read, but because I had too many OTHER books already purchased, so I couldn't justify buying more books to read the challenges. Someday I will make it to the Rifter books. Someday.

The Nava Challenge sounds good — I'm definitely in.

And having at least one "traditional" (= a book per month) BOM book before that sounds like a good idea.

I also would love to discuss one of Josh's books with you guys in the near future. I recall that we talked about reading and discussing Fair Game together at some point. Now when it's going to have a sequel, that would be a nice way to re-read Fair Game. :-)

I think Josh said that Fair Play is due out in November from Carina Press. So if someone will put him under any pressure in this case it's probably going to be Carina Press, not us... ;-)

Fair point, Johanna (no pun intended)... I'd forgotten this one was a Carina Press one. So I agree, that date is one which is likely to stick! And therefore it would be good to read Fair Game together in October, in preparation for Fair Play.

So the BDSM book got three stars from me. The author could have cut it off at 75% with a perfect ending where they admit, finally, that they love each other. But no, there was more after that that didn't seem important at all. Not even the proposal at the end was worth the extra 25%. The sex scenes were also very long and I ended up skimming a lot, then glancing at a few words to realize they hadn't even begun the actual sex yet.

Since I've already bought the sequel, and because the summary sounds like something I'd really like, I'll give it a try. It's a new couple, so we'll see.

If it starts to fail, I've got The Elegant Corpse that I've been wanting to read for a few years now. It's time I get that done!

I have so many books to look forward to right now, it's truly delightful. And the best thing is that there are quite a few from my favorite authors: Don't Let Go by Harper Fox, Forget Me Not by Jordan Castillo Price, Lying with Scorpions by Aleksandr Voinov, Backtrack and Pretty Boy Dead by Joseph Hansen...

I'm eager to read them all, but at the same time I love the feeling of happy anticipation. It's so nice to linger over it. :-)

Lovely list! I'm looking forward to some of those too - Harper's Don't Let Go, and Jordan's Persistence of Memory (both!), and two more Hansens :-)

Susinok | 5205 comments I'm reading some non m/m non romance science fiction! Grimspace by Ann Aguirre. It starts off with a bang with action right away. Fun stuff so far.

I bought her book during the whole convention harassment debacle. She wrote about her experiences being a female sf writer in a male-dominated genre. Her book sounded interesting, and I got the first book it the series. I'm glad I did.

I read both Don't Let Go and Forget Me Not last week (and I'm in the middle of a Hansen, so it was a superb week, reading-wise) and they are both lovely, wonderful books. These are two of my most favourite authors and I absolutely love both of these series. Forget Me Not really made an impression on me and I thought it was brilliant. Elijah Crowe is a captivating fellow.

I've been meaning to read that one for a while now, but have not gotten around to it yet. I haven't read much sci-fi, but I have enjoyed a few of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books. Glad to hear you're enjoying it! I'll get to it someday. :)

It was one of my "mixed" reading weeks. I had good luck with some freebies the week before, but this week I made my way about 30-50% through two longish books before throwing in the towel. Both were BDSM-themed, but it seemed that all of the writers' research came from other BDSM romances, and not the better ones. 50 Shades bandwagon? Not sure why I read that much, but sometimes I stick with a book to see if it can be turned around. Or maybe it was just a junk-food binge/stall because I couldn't decide where to begin with my A-list? ; )

And what an A-list! I read Forget Me Not yesterday and I'm reading Don't Let Go today. Still have two books to go in the Brandstetter challenge, and I've been saving A Case of Possession as a special treat.

message 3539: by Antonella (new)

My BDSM book this week made many references to others I've read. The MC kept referring back to scenes he'd read for things he wanted to try and to recall how certain things were done. But when his Dom starts talking about either a safe word or contract (can't remember which) he becomes clueless even though I know the books he's read talk about them in detail.

It was just weird referencing books I've read and talking about scenes I remember. I think it's just me though. Adrien can reference classic movies all he wants and I don't have a problem with it. Who knows.

I guarantee it is not only you. I really don't like authors' name dropping from contemporary m/m writers. References to movies or music are perfectly ok.

I did like to know what Adrien had read though ;-).

KC | 4897 comments Yesterday i was reading The Butcher's Son. It's my first book by Dorien Grey and i'm very pleasantly surprised. I couldn't put it down. And style/atmosphere/humour-wise, it reminded me of Richard Stevenson's Donald Strackey mysteries which i love.

That was the thing, I'm fine with Adrien reading things and giving titles and authors. So why does contemporarily written M/M bother me (us) so much? For some reason it doesn't seem right. I dunno.

Of course, when I think back on how this author used Chris Owens' Deviations series almost like a guide book in parts, I'm reminded that there are many non-fiction books written by people in the lifestyle for those who are already in it or who are interested in it. Referencing one of those, title mention or not, would have been a better choice.
