What Are you Reading?

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

I started it this morning. :)
I just finished Aleks' Incursion. Fantastic short little sci-fi read involving aliens, of course. Highly recommend it!

Still reading my Harry Bosh collection. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
With a dash of some Mickey Haller audiobooks thrown into the game :-)
We have a 3-day weekend with Monday off (President's Day), so I lazed around reading the books listed on the Q&A freebie page. Maybe it was my mood, but I found all of them to be sweet, 3 to 4+ reads for me. I'm also almost midway through Training Season, but took a break since it's a longer straight-through read than I'm in the mood for right now.
Collide, Final Destiny, Winter Wolf, Hollywood & Mine, Hooch & Cake

I've got a two day weekend. Wish it was three though. After the job fair on Saturday (where it's been estimated that we had about 1,000 people in attendance!) I need a long break to do nothing but stay home and read or watch movies.
I just finished An Uncommon Whore by Belinda McBride. A great short space opera about a king thrown to humiliating slavery and having his memories taken away.
I'm about to start the sequel When I Fall. Three books in three days, I like this! :-)

I have a question: Have any of you read anything else by Joseph Hansen but Dave Brandstetter mysteries? I'm currently reading Dave Brandstetter #11 The Boy Who Was Buried this Morning and since I only have one book to go after this one, I'm quite worried already if there aren't any Hansen books to read after these...

Josh wrote an essay about ''Hansen Before Dave'', here the bibliography he gave:
Lost on Twilight Road (Colton), 1964. Strange Marriage (Colton), 1965. The Corrupter and Other Stories (Colton), 1968.
Known Homosexual (Colton), 1968; Stranger to Himself, 1978; Pretty Boy Dead, 1984. Cocksure (Colton), 1969. Gard (Coulton), 1969. Hang-Up (Colton), 1969. Fadeout, 1970. The Outward Side (Colton), 1971. Tarn House (Brock), 1971. Todd (Colton), 1971.
Death Claims, 1973. Longleaf (Brock), 1974. Troublemaker, 1975.
One Foot in the Boat, 1977. The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of, 1978. The Dog and Other Stories, 1979. Skinflick, 1979. A Smile in His Lifetime, 1981. Backtrack, 1982. Gravedigger, 1982. Job’s Year, 1983. Brandstetter & Others: Five Fictions, 1984. Nightwork, 1984. Steps Going Down, 1985. The Little Dog Laughed, 1986. Early Graves, 1987. Bohannon’s Book: Five Mysteries, 1988. Obedience, 1988. The Boy Who Was Buried This Morning, 1990. A Country of Old Men, 1991. Bohannon’s Country, 1993. Living Upstairs, 1993.
Jack of Hearts, 1995. A Few Doors West of Hope: The Life and Times of Dauntless Don Slater, 1998. Ghosts and Other Poems, 1998. Blood, Snow, and Classic Cars: Mystery Stories, 2000. Bohannon’s Women: Mystery Stories, 2002. Cutback Path, 2002.
I've bought Living Upstairs on paper in 2009, so it was still available then.

Okey-dokey... I ended up buying The Golden Age of Gay Fiction in which Josh's essay The Play of Shadows and Light: Hansen Before Dave is... :-)

My favorite Hansen story is actually a standalone novella called Backtrack.

Thank you for the recommendation, Josh. I found used Backtrack (that is supposed to be in very good condition) for £ 0.01 on Amazon.co.uk. :-)

It's classic L.A. Noir. Moody and melancholy and beautifully done.

Oooh, that sound so promising! Thank you again! :-)

I had to have it after this recommendation, ordered it used from the US, which means the book itself costs 0,01 USD, while the shipping to Norway costs almost 17 USD :)
Oh well, I am sure it is worth it. And it is still cheaper than buying books here.

They actually charge high prices for e-books as well, which is why Norwegian e-books haven't really taken off yet. So as you may imagine, I mostly read English e-books these days.
It is the price for being a small language I guess, even the best sellers don't sell that many copies. For an author to really make money, she or he has to be translated and sold to the English or German market, like Jo Nesbø for example.
Paperbacks are cheaper, but most books come out in hardback first and you have to wait a couple of years for the paperbacks.

Anne, isn't it much cheaper to buy from Amazon.UK? They sell it for 0.40 but shipping cost is much less there: Estimated Postage & Packaging £4.02 (to Netherlands, not sure how much to Norway).
Maybe it's not to late to cancel the order from .com?

My innerly voice told me to shut up, but I'm always in favour of full disclosure: I bought it as well, of course...

I didn't think of that.

I haven't checked if they have the book in question, but bookdepository has worldwide free shipping, the books are usually a bit pricier than Amazon though, you can pay with €, $ and £, and if I remember correctly, a few lesser used currencies

http://www.play.com/stores/AwesomeBoo...

They do free shipping worldwide, they say, so if you're buying a new print book that would seem to be a good choice. I used to check their price against Amazon UK and it would match.
As for second-hand books, I would suggest using the UK rather than .com Amazon site (assuming you can't find an alternative second-hand bookseller in the UK). I would hope shipping costs would be lower, although you would have to check.

I know bookdepository ships for free to Israel as I have a friend there who uses it frequently, I have only used it through Amazon UK's marketplace and then you pay p&p
And thanks for linking, my phone refused to paste :-/

Yup. That was the shipping cost from UK to Finland, too. The book itself cost £0.01 and postage & packaging £4.02. :-)

but you have to have read the The Persistence of Memory first.
Aargh! The paperback will be published only next month! What shall I do?

Thanks for letting us know, Antonella! I was waiting for this one. :-)

I was already thinking that I might try to resist till then. But in fact this is the perfect solution: the ebook now and the paperback in Bristol!

I am so excited for this one! Yay! :)
Antonella, are you telling us that you can actually resist the power of a new JCP book? ;) You have very serious willpower, my friend. :)
I saw her email and I bought it about thirty seconds later. I'll be reading that one tonight!

It helps the fact that I know I'll be there waiting for number 3 as soon as I finish ''Forget Me Not''... Anyway I bought it, of course!
The two book series An Uncommon Whore by Belinda Mcbride was about so much more than I originally thought. How she managed to pack so much into those short novellas without making the space seem cramped, I'll never know. But I highly recommend them! They're very sweet stories that include children from two previous marriages.
I'm currently reading a BDSM story. I'm not completely into it though. There's something about the writing that's bugging me, but I can't really explain it. I'll continue reading for now since I also have the sequel if I can get through this one.
I know part of what I didn't like was a jump where the two Doms talking suddenly turned into RL authors complaining about 50 Shades. Even in the first chapter I could tell that was out of character for them, like the author had to pause the story to tell me this would be nothing like the other book.
Knowing that I just bought JCP's latest, and still have to read the first, that sounds like the better read right now!

Clockwork Tangerine

I'm half way through Threshold and really enjoying it. I love her characters.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts when you do finally analyze it.

I read some reviews on the book and it's got solid 4 stars, so that encouraged me to keep going. Story-wise, it's getting better. But the writing could be improved just a little bit. Nothing major though.
I've discovered in the last five years or so that I'm getting really picky about what I read. And even little things bug the heck out of me. I'm so glad I'm not an English teacher. I couldn't handle all those childish mistakes, even knowing the kids haven't grown enough to learn everything I've learned. It still bugs me. And knowing stupid thing like that bugs me, bugs me. lol.

Yes, LOVE this series. So good! I hope I have time to read all of Michael Nava's books soon. I did buy them all in used paperback. Though, none of them match, which is irritating, and not all of them are in wonderful shape.
I've also bought a few more of that series set in 1980's Chicago... oh... what was the ... I've forgotten the author and the title. Grrr. My mind is blanking.
Anyway, more books!

Marshall Thornton's Boystown series?

You do remember that we plan a group reading (challenge?) for Michael Nava, don't you?
Ah! That's it Hambel. Thanks!
Antonella, we're still doing that? Sweet. :-) I wasn't sure. But if we do a challenge right after Dave, I'm not sure I'll have the time to also read BOMs this time around. We'll see.

Oh, cool! I wasn't sure if we were still planning to do that.

I'm not sure either ;-).
What I know is that when I proposed it there were quite a few people in favour...
For me it would be like for the Brandstetter challenge. Even though I knew in advance that the books where good, the idea of reading 1200 pages was deterring me from starting, but to do it together gave me a boost.
