What Are you Reading?

I had that problem once. Thankfully, those who gift me with books don't usually ask me how I liked them. A few years ago someone gifted me a book I had just seen in the ordering cart for the library, and didn't buy. I had all the money in the world to buy it, and I didn't. Well, being that this was a gift, I tried to get into it, but two pages in, the main characters were driving me nuts. The rich, bitch who's better than anyone else in school. I can't get into that. So I gave up and gave it away.

I think buying books is sometimes easier for younger kids. They've read less than an avid adult reader, and you want to expand their horizons. I never would have read Harry Potter if my Grandmother hadn't bought me the first four books for my birthday one year. I hadn't wanted to read them just because they were too popular in my mind. But I opened the first one and I was a gonner. lol.

Agreed! As adults we've developed very specific taste, likes, and dislikes. But as children EVERY book is a journey to discovering those preferences.
Nowadays, I don't even like GR or Amazon recommendations "if you like Josh Lanyon, you'll also like every other gay book labelled a 'mystery'!" even though what I love most about Josh's books is the writing style. Too bad you can't get auto generated recommendations based on style and quality :)

So we need a...Pandora for books. Something that aligns style, so if you tap in "Josh Lanyon", you'll get a selection of books in a similar style. :)
Although the Amazon Recommends got me to try Josh in the first place. The combined AE 1&2 book showed up in that recs bar on the Amazon page, and I went in and tried it. :D That was a good day.

That WAS a good day :) And admittedly, I've gotten a few good recommendations from Amazon and GR, I'm just being cranky from all that bad ones I've felt suckered into. As much as I love Andrea Speed's Infected series and Mary Calmes' Jin & Logan, I feel like a vampire at daybreak every time I see a shifter book show up these days.
Seriously, you should see me hiss and hide my eyes!!

If that isn't a vivid image I don't know what is!

Wow! I am wildly impressed. I was considering a re-read, but now I like your idea of listening/reading.

I've done a horrible thing to my wallet. Well, the future of it. And my full bookshelves. The first copy of The Hobbit I ever read was a library book illustrated by Michael Hague. My favorite illustrator. I was reminded of this the other day when a patron came in carrying that edition (I hadn't even realized our children's room had a copy!) and was looking for a portable edition.
Then seeing the movie tonight reminded me again of it. I put it on my wish list. And then went to see what other books Michael Hague has done and promptly put those on my wish list too. I wish I'd looked years ago. A book on unicorns? Hell yes! Lol.
Anyway, Vadim and Dan are calling my name. I'd best get going. I just had to say that. Maybe get it out of my system, if that's possible. Lol.

I went to Amazon to see this Michael Hague book on unicorns. Pretty! Then I saw one of the quotations he'd illustrated and laughed:
"A wise man never plays leapfrog with a unicorn. Tibetan proverb."
I just finished rereading Special Forces: Soldiers.
Just... wow. Even the second time around. I nearly cried this morning. And last night too. Last night Dan was in the hospital in India healing from shrapnel he got protecting the British Ambassador from an explosion. Vadim faked a heroin addiction to escape the army, cross two countries where he's an enemy, just to get to Dan in the hospital. What an amazing thing to get to witness, that love they have for each other. It'll get me every time.
After work this afternoon, I'll get back into Basawar for a few days then get back on track with Dave Brandstetter. The challenge meter keeps telling me I'm getting behind in my mystery reading! I must fix that, asap. lol.

Wow. I have no words. You are FEARLESS with your reading challenges, Jordan! ;-) I only have the Brandstetter and The Rifter and I'm soooo behind the schedule with both of them. Although I did spend some quality time in Basawar today. :-)

Ha. I wish. lol. I seem to have lost a lot of other hobbies and things I did when not at work. So that leaves me with more time for reading. Well, I'm knitting sometimes. Mostly during movies or audio books, if I'm not listening to the audio book on my walk home, that is.
We had already stated our challenges awhile ago when someone else said they wanted to reread Soldiers, and I didn't want to miss out, because reading that book (and the following three) with friends is way more fun.

I took part in the last Special Forces group read -- maybe a year ago? Yes, it's extremely nice to have friendly, understanding shoulders near by while reading that series. ;-) Enjoy, Jordan!

Of course you can. I basically read the 7 books I've read till now in two bouts of ''Brandstetter's fever'' ;-).
Alison wrote: "I started the first Dave Brandstetter the other day and I love it so far. I'm a bit behind on the challenge, but maybe I can still catch up!"
Even if you didn't "catch up," the topics are open-ended. We're all reading at slightly different paces, and happy to read and respond to new entries. Go for it!

Yay! So glad you liked it, Alison! You can definitely catch up.
I'll be reading number eight, I think, in a couple of days. Can't wait!
After reading Soldiers and listening to Widdershins on audio, I hate to say this, but I'm tired of sex scenes! So I'm glad The Rifter and Brandstetter don't have many or are completely off the page.

Heh, same here, sort of. During the first bout i needed time between books to take it all in and feel amazed leisurely, and then suddenly, the second bout, i can't stop reading them. At some point, around the fourth one, i think, it's become more intense, higher stakes across the board.

Hurray! Enjoy! :-)

I loved that so much. 'Fun' is exactly the word. :) Pure shameless non-stop entertainment. Dying for the next, in which I am told the author just starts blowing things up.

Yes, fun and cool and very good-different :-) I hope we'll see more of Kate's new assistant in the next book.

Oh, explosions too, even better ;)
I finished Faster Than the Speed of Light this weekend and really liked it a lot. Set in the 40's during the House on Unamerican Activities Commissions reign of terror and featuring physicists at a California university. A really lovely book and highly recommended.

Absolutely recommended, sadly not read by many.
Your post made me go back and at least refer to a good review. I tend to leave the 5 stars speaking, but it is good to say why a book was excellent.

I Liked that one a lot, it really deserves a bigger audience.
My new year's reading so far (from the most recent):
Stranger Things Have Happened: An Adrien English Write Your Own Damn Story
Stormhaven
Jurassic Heart
Inch by Inch
Black Blades
The Little Dog Laughed
Nightwork
Gravedigger
The Raven King
The Foxhole Court
So that's Adrien, Brandstetter, The Rifter, and a bunch of other all over the place stuff. ; )

It is a m/m story, and I don't think once is going to be enough for me.
The first several pages you'll find somewhat overwritten, but Ms Christo finds her feet very quickly and never falters thereafter. (Even at that, you can't read those first pages without seeing, hearing, smelling, being in this place.)

Thank you for the recommendation! I have read Gives Light and Looks Over by her, and have the other books in the series already on my Kindle waiting their turn. Very good books, so I also recommend this author. Seems like I have to get The King of Celts sooner or later too :)

I need to check it out, your recommendations are always good!

I enjoyed that one. I have her new book Secrets and Ink. I need to read it soon. Her follow up to Spirit Sanguine is coming out soon, I think.
