Thanks Susinok, I'd already put it in my wishlist and was just being mischievous! I like Heidi Cullinan.

Wait a bit...u will like him better in the last volumes. He makes a good pair with Masa :D not as good as Kei and Ran but still good

Kai has gotten better, but when that really cute kid from the other Yakuza family came along, I was hoping Kai would redirect his fantasies to someone else his own age. Guess not. Lol.

I just started vol. 11 this morning. I loved Kei and Ran's half of the book and kinda wish they'd put those two last.

For a long time I felt like Kai was still in HS and not in college. And Ran and Kei seem so mature by comparison I thought they were done with college! *shakes head*

Anyway, with luck I'll finish the last volume shortly.

Done!

It was a good ending. It made me feel better about the whole thing with Kai and Masa, but I still hold that I would have rather read about Kei and Ran last. Save the best for last, and all that. OTOH, I recognize the need to hold out on Kai, because they were pretty up in the air until the end.

But it was a good ending. Calm and happy. :-)

message 2664: by Marge (new)

Marge (margec01) | 599 comments I'm reading Stage Whispers by Adam Fitzroy. Perhaps not as fast-paced and science-fictiony as some of the others being read here, but I really like the main character, some wonderful secondary characters, and all the theater references. A nice LONG book, covering about nine years, with a lot of quiet angst but an eventual excellent finish.

I love the early volumes. I did sort of lost track (and interest) around 7 or so. But that's more about my inability to sustain long term interest in almost any cast of characters.

Jax | 59 comments Can all you Bone Rider fans answer something for me? I'm at about 25% and it's not really hooking me, not flowing well. It's been slow going mostly because of all the time spent in the characters' heads with very little dialogue. I hate every time I turn the page and see more long blocks of text. I like more interaction between characters.

I also have a hard time with the way the alien AI speaks like your average earthling. I'm telling myself that he's assuming the speech pattern of his host, but the author hasn't said so and I would've preferred for him to have a more 'other' way of speaking.

So, did you find it slow or hard to get into at first & it picked up? Or maybe this just isn't for me. I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

I took a short break from this book. We're traveling/visiting relatives and I'm reading books that I can enjoy with less attention, or don't mind being interrupted, because when I'm really into a read I want to pick my own stopping points.

At my (40%) point: Riley and Misha are still estranged, so there's no direct interaction, only their thoughts and memories of each other. Riley and McLane have very direct interaction with each other. : )

This may not be for you. Others who've finished the book may offer more helpful info. My niggle was not McLane's voice. I assumed it was part of his programming (rather than sloppy writing), and prefer not being given blatant explanations for that kind of detail. I thought the military was a bit faster on the uptake than would be likely, but later decided it was refreshing to have some of those genre stereotypes avoided.

I will finish reading it this weekend, because I'll need to give my full attention to Kick Start : D

I read Home and Heart by Chris Quinton.

Holiday stories both of them. Much better use of my time than battleshopping.

Jax | 59 comments Battleshopping - I love it! The term, not the activity. I am not a Black Friday kind of gal. And I am boycotting the stores that opened on Thanksgiving.

Actually, with my children grown I don't plan to do much shopping at all this year. Other than some online ordering, I plan to "shop small" and support local non-chains. I just love the decorations, the music, and the food. I'd rather be cozy in my home than out shopping.

Yep, I read it yesterday. It was wonderful! I want a deli!

The only shopping I will be doing is a kitten t-shirt for Michael, a Minecraft Lego set for my nephew, and a jewelry making starter kit for my niece. My niece and nephew are not old enough to have personalities and likes and dislikes and it's SO much easier buying for them.

All of said shopping will be done online. I can get lots of the jewelry stuff from Etsy from small jewelry and craft businesses.

Hi, Jax!

I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you, or at least it doesn't work at the moment.

For me it was insta-love (with the book, I don't appreciate the other kind of insta-love!). I kept thinking how genial was the idea, and the execution. I also love science-fiction.

I suppose that if you need dialogues to love a book you'll have to wait a while.

That was a truly sad start to the day. :-( I've been thinking about it all morning.

message 2687: by Jax (new)

Jax | 59 comments Thanks for responding Antonella. Dialogue is really important to me. It can make or break a book as far as I'm concerned. Whenever I look at print books at a store, I always make sure there's plenty of dialogue scattered throughout the book.

I'm also wondering if this book would benefit from some trimming by an editor. It's hard to know if some of these characters (like the military people) will become important further on, but I get frustrated by following people I don't care as much about. I don't need to know everything the military people are doing or thinking other than that they are pursuing the alien. Right now it feels like a distraction from the main story. But, like I said, maybe it pays off later.

I'm reading a little more today & then I'll see how I feel. I may have to read it in dribs and drabs if it doesn't start clicking for me.

I think i'm the same way. I need dialogue and interaction between character. I don't want to be stuck in someone's stream of thought the whole time. I was thinking about buying Bone Rider because a friend recommended it to me and it sounded good, but I think i'll wait on it.

ttg | 305 comments Lou wrote: "I'm looking for a book recommendation for a gift. Seventeen year old boy, smart, quiet, loved Hunger Games (book and movie), likes historical fiction. Not romance. Any suggestions?"

I think the YA historical AU series that starts with Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld is pretty awesome. It's set in an AU 20th century, around WWI, The two MCs are a Scottish girl who is disguised as a boy to join the English Royal Air Force, and the other is the teenage son of the assassinated Archduke Ferdinand. There is a light romance subplot, but nothing culminates until the third book (and it's light.) It's mostly a great adventure story (with airships and robots.)

Another good one is the historical City of Thieves by David Benioff (who is one of the screenwriters for Game of Thrones.) It's set in Leningrad during the siege during WWII and is about a young man (around 18) who is caught stealing a ration card. He is paired with a ladies man Russian soldier who had been caught AWOL. The army leader gives them a task--his daughter is getting married and he needs a dozen eggs to have her cake made. The two prisoners have to go out into the (starving) city to find the dozen eggs, or they'll be executed. So, off they go on their quest, which includes running into cannibals, and hitting the countryside where they find resistance fighters and Nazis.

It was a great story, with excellent (not m/m) chemistry between the two MCs.

That's what I got. :)

Oh yes! City of Thieves was excellent. Really stayed with me for a long time after reading.

If you're interested in another book with a movie tie-in, The Book Thief is also wonderful. It's heartbreaking and beautiful; a lovely portrait of goodness and sweetness in the face of horrendous ugliness. Very moving.

And I have a couple of romances TBR right now basically - Astrid's Sweet and Sour and Lost and Found by ZA Maxfield.

And since I'm in the mood for mysteries these days - David Frome (first Pinkerton mystery), Hansen's Gravedigger, and Josephine Tey's Man in the Queue. Not sure which one i'll start first, but i can't wait.

To me, a romance IS dialog. The dialog is the best part. That's the part where we come to know the characters, where we seem them fall in love, where the plot advances. Everything else just supports and frames the dialog, in my opinion.

There's hope for me yet. When I write, it's mostly dialogue. :)

Right now I'm battling a book set in present tense. WTF! I think it's going to be put aside soon as a DNF, though. I can barely take it.
