What Are you Reading?

While I don't think of myself as having hoarder tendencies, I do want to own what I like. For me that is the norm. I will always revisit favorite works and I want them close by. :)
First To Kill certainly won't win any awards. But it was a fun, entertaining read. I laughed a lot, and was glad the romance didn't turn out to be too serious. And yes, research happened! Lol. It would be hard to miss that, what with the amount of details he puts in the book.
I'll be reading the second one soon. That's the one I got in a raffle basket of signed books.
As far as borrowing books and other things, I like to own what I'm likely to want to read, watch, or listen to again. I prefer libraries over netflix because they're free. If the library doesn't have something, unless it's out of print, I can have them purchase it and it's automatically put on hold for me, as a patron. I just don't borrow enough movies in a month to warrant a need for something like netflix.
I will often borrow something, like a CD, listen to it, and if I really like it enough, I'll go out and buy it for myself.

Make that triplets. I also prefer to get books from my local library even if I know I will end up buying some of them.

Any thoughts?"
The books on my bookshelves make me happy. Very happy. Even though i read mostly on kindle these days, i still get very excited when i find an interesting edition of a book i like, and i like having the print version of books that i want to reread someday.
As for tv/movies, Netflix is awesome, but if it's something that i like to watch again and again, i prefer to own it. And music and audiobooks are must-own. Otherwise i tend to forget about music i like and if i have it all in one place i can browse and be reminded of whatever :-)

As for physically owning things, I still like that, too. I like seeing books all over the shelves, and some DVD's demand multiple viewings. :)
I have three real (LOL) books coming in the mail this week and I'm excited, even though I've aleady read them on my kindle. ;)

I noticed a magazine subscription service last night. They all seem to be priced at $9.95.
I noticed a magazine subscription service last night. They all seem to be priced at $9.95.

And.. I found an old issue of Out Magazine with an interview of John Barrington (Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood). For 99 cents! I also now know the location of the 50 best gay bars worldwide.
The subscription service is not for me. I'd rather just buy the ebook myself, get the file, store it, re read it, etc. If the service ever goes out of business then you are out of luck. I use Netflix, but still buy the occasional DVD for ones I want to keep. (Very few though).
The link to that one service wanted you to sign up for a month free trial. Well I don't want a month free trail. I want to browse your titles to see what you have before giving you ANY of my information. No deal. Are the books downloadable into Kindle or other devices? The slash page was pretty (though no titles interested me) but gave no actual information.

I know, a lot of horrible stuff was going on but there were things I found funny regardless. The one that sticks out in my mind was the part where Harvey was trying to tell him "I love you" and he's a straight guy trying to tell his equally straight buddy and having difficulty. He's cut off with an "I know. Me too." And that's it. It was part awww, part, OMG, you're such a guy. I dunno. Sometimes I find weird things funny.
When Holly was worried they were actually going to torture the cousins, I knew they weren't really going to do it, so I had an inward chuckle because I knew and she didn't. I'm like that.

The first one reminded me quite a bit of Ty and Zane. The second book not so much, but the "two alpha-dog crimefighters butting heads" dynamic is definitely still there.

I have that one on my list..... and another series.... Sinners? as well.... the first one was a freebie... but I haven't started it yet.
Right now I can't wait for work to be over so I can go home and read [book:Shock & Awe... I feel Abi Roux has really grown as an author, her last two Cut&Run books were the best of the series (in my opinion anyway)... so I'm really looking forward to this one.
Edited and deleted to try to fix the odd post but it doesn't work...

Aw I loved that book, but I know it's not for everybody.
Susinok, that looks fantastic! I'll definitely need to check it out. Thanks for the rec. I've never read anything by SE Jakes, but some of her other works look really good too. :-)

Bad Idea really dragged for me. Too much up and down in the relationship due to immaturity, too much comic stuff, and it really needed some content "cut this extra crap out" type editing.

The characters, both damaged and stubborn assholes, are GREAT! I love 'em!

That's next. I love pre-ording from Riptide and getting my books early. :)

I finished it and, honestly, I was so, so, bored. I usually like these warped sociopaths as MCs, but I had to force myself to finish the book. Ah, well... Next! :)

I wanted to like Ty and Zane, but I just couldn't get into that series. So for me, something similar, if executed well, sounds perfect!

Yeah it rrrreaally dragged in the middle. But oh well, on to better things.

Oh! Yes. :-D Yes, okay THAT makes sense. There is definitely some gruesome stuff in there.

I almost asked the ever silly, "Would I like it?" But what is it you liked? Coz it seems like something maybe I would too.

Think two very damaged alpha males, Prophet and Tom, investigating a murder which turns out to be related in a round about way to Prophet's past. This murder dredges up a ton of emotional baggage that Prophet categorically refuses to deal with.
Prophet is former Navy Seal and then CIA. Hates the rules, has a dicey childhood, and stubbornly does not want to play nice with ANYbody.
Tom's former FBI who screwed up a mission and has blamed himself ever since. His past is from the bayou and a very backwards town where he was tormented by his father and town as a young man.
The characters are amazing and complex even though you want to choke the life out of them sometimes (like Jake!).
The story is pretty cool, too. :) Yes I think you'd like it. Well edited too.

ETA: Okay, first, Facebook was all wonky this morning. Now, I've got a book cover showing up when a book TITLE should be showing up, and my entire post is italicized when only part of it should be. Grr.... The internet is misbehaving everywhere! Ugh. Goodreads should fix this and ignore snarky, non-threatening, non-defamatory reader shelves!

I read Catch a Ghost in earlier October before Long Time Gone was released, then have been saving that second one for... maybe this weekend? Catch a Ghost was a 5 for me (rounded up), but a really enjoyable read for this (sub)genre. When you read the premise it may sound like been-there-read-that or over the top angst, but S.E. Jakes pulls it off.
Oh, I also read Free Falling awhile back. It's in the same "universe" as the Prophet books (two more books are planned for that series). The guys work for the same mercenary agency.
Super nice covers too.

Ha! Josh, I'm really not that crazy to laugh while actual death is occurring or other gruesome parts. I was on the edge of my seat in horror for a good portion of the book. And maybe that's why I enjoyed the laughter so much and why certain parts I found to be funnier than they would have been out of context.
Did we ever pick a November read? I'd suggest this new one for which I've just forgotten the title. Drat the app which won't let me look it up. Catch The Moon? Not right, but close? I hope.
Catch A Ghost.
You'd think since I'm now writing about a ghost, I would have remembered that title.

I didn't care much for Ty and Zane in books 1 and 2. But for some reason I bought the first 4 books in the series before reading any of it (?), and I hate wasting money, so.... Book 3 really sucked me in, and book 4 was good, too. So if you only tried book 1 and didn't like it, maybe it's worth sticking it out a little longer. (Although I understand if you don't. Life is too short to slog through books you don't like.)

I had book 1 in print and gave it away after the second attempt, so I won't be attempting it again. Having to read through two books of drek just to get to something good doesn't appeal, especially if I don't have the books. Though, If I'd bought the first four, I might have done the same as you and gotten through them.
A long time ago I bought
Sammy's Place, and found out it was the third in a trilogy. So I bought all three to find out that the first two books were so boring I couldn't stand it. The third wasn't nearly as bad. Turns out, the third book was written first, but readers asked for the first two books because they wanted to know how some of the characters met. Bad idea to go along with that reader wish, I think.
I should have bought the first book before the others. I learned my lesson that time!

Well, publishing wisdom used to be that a series sucked you in books 3 -5. I don't know if it holds true now given the competition for any reader's attention -- and how long some series run. But I do think the third book is often a turning point for both the author and the readers.

I dunno, that seems too far into a series for me. Especially given the number of books I own that I haven't read yet. I've got enough to cover me for an entire year without having to buy anything new. And that's a scary thought!
I suppose, back in the day, or for those who don't buy as many books as some of us here do, this theory would work really well.
But I just don't understand reading a second book if I didn't like the first book. Oh well.

Then, Truthful Change. I thought the suspense plot had potential but the sex totally overwhelmed everything else. The "plot-zombie" bothered me (view spoiler) , and i just generally didn't feel this one.
Then this morning i read the sample of Touch & Geaux, and i now feel compelled to read it (i don't know why i thought i wouldn't...).
Next: Shock and Awe and Catch a Ghost. And maybe King Perry.
