I have just re-read In a Dark Wood and read The Parting Glass, which was lovely. Thank you Josh; the new book dispelled the horrors of the old one. I've always felt that the reason why Tim became an alcoholic in the first place was because of his original encounter with the Forrester compounded by his fear and guilt about not telling anyone. Is that what you meant us to think, Josh? Or is it just one possibility?

Thanks, guys. I am staying optimistic. Meanwhile I will enjoy having more time to hang out with my kiddo.:)I am reading Heidi Cullinan's new book Love Lessons and then I think I'll start A Midwinter Prince.

I think it was an enormous factor, yes. Not the sole factor, but certainly major. And then of course drinking itself begins to create its own problems and its own dynamic.

"This looks very interesting. Saw Chris M. talking about it the other day. For all of their cooperation, it landed in many arenas except the economy - not good in the 80's.
If you read, twould be great to hear your reactions. :)
I needed some Kaje and am reading
I started Love Lessons by Heidi Cullinan this morning. I read Charlie, Rentboy by JP Barnaby last night. It was rather sweet despite the subject matter. Not sweet in the no-sex way, just a nice love story.
I have just finished reading Blood Red Butterfly and An Unlocked Heart. I enjoyed both of them. I am finishing off Elements of Retrofit and then I intend to read Puzzle Me This, Sibling Rivals and Love Lessons. I am not working at the moment and wont be returning to work for the next couple of weeks and it is really nice to have some free time to read and relax. :)
I am still at home, so today I finished The Lost Prince, so intense and beautiful, I really adore Harper Fox' books. I also finished Bli hvis du kan. Reis hvis du må., by a young Norwegian author, an amazingly good book. She is on the edge of being really recognised here after her trilogy about three boys who died in Afghanistan and the aftermath of that tragedy. This book is the first of the three. Very mature and insightful writing for such a young writer. I have read two, will have to buy the third now :)

There's one for the Five Things I Love list. Discovering a new writer. :-)

It sounds horrible to say this, but I'm brain dead today and I don't know why, thus, I wish I was home sick in bed. I want to be reading good books!
I hope you feel better Anne!

Amazon informed me that I own it -- it was a freebie from April 2012. I guess it's safe to chuck it?

I am better, thanks for asking, and reading good books definitely helps. I am probably back to work tomorrow, which of course is good, but then I have less time to read! I hope your brain will come awake soon, but some days are like that. :)

I mean it's not that they aren't clever. It's just that you can be clever and still be boring. Oddly enough!

You could always try a page or two. Maybe I'm just not in the right frame of mind.

Hm... I downloaded samples for both...
I'm reading Mongrel and loving it. It's dark, but not too dark, and with sweet moments too, and i find the social issues interesting and pertinent.Lately, every time i read something by a writer new to me, i find myself expecting the writer to resort to "easy solutions"; i don't know why this is, but as time passes, it takes more to trust a writer, i don't know if it's just my lack of patience, or something else. But two books that have pleasantly surprised me are The Magpie Lord and now Mongrel. Both avoid those easy solutions, and i appreciate that. So i discovered two new writers, yay! :-)

I loved Mongrel, but for some unknown reason I haven't read its sequel Merman yet. If/when you are planning to read it, KC, let me know, it would be fun to read and discuss it together.

I'm 70% into Mongrel and i might want to read Merman right after, but i can also wait a bit - it would be much more fun to read and discuss it together :-)

Cool. :-) I'm currently reading Hell Cop 2 (25 % through), but I can pause between the stories and continue after Merman.

I've have this one on my kindle, too. Update when you start reading it and I'll try and join you. That would be fun.
I am reading Trouble Maker at the moment. For some reason I am bogging down. I am going to finish it this weekend though!

I finished Love Lessons by Heidi Cullinan. I really loved it and did NOT expect a critical analysis of Mansfield Park in the middle of it. I love when I get literary surprises like that. Josh is great at that too.Started In a Dark Wood by Josh Lanyon at lunch. Tim and Luke just set out on their hike.
@Johanna @Reggie - i just finished Mongrel, so i'm ready to start Merman whenever you guys are ready, let me know? :-)
I just finished Heidi Cullinan's Love Lessons as well, and it was pretty cute. I was in the mood for something a bit on the lighter side and I really enjoyed it. I, too, was surprised by the Jane Austen analysis!
KC wrote: "@Johanna @Reggie - i just finished Mongrel, so i'm ready to start Merman whenever you guys are ready, let me know? :-)"Okay I'll start it tomorrow and put it on my update. Every is welcome,of course.
I just finished Bridge Water surprisingly it was a freebie at Amazon because it's really good. Well up to 90%. The last 10% were kind of hurriedly put together, too hurriedly actually. I wish it would have been as carefully thought out as most of the book was. Still I can totally recommend it.

I loved Snap by Allen Renfro.

I loved Snap too, very different kind of story. Bridge Water is on my Kindle, waiting it's turn :)

Cool! I will start this afternoon. I think Reggie is also starting to read it, so that's great! I hope we all enjoy it :-)
I really enjoyed Love Lessons, too.I just started
by Amy Lane. I have really been looking forward to this one.
I read
about a month ago and loved it. Also, both books in this series have wonderful covers.
I've been on one of my usual mixed-up reading marathons. I'm jumping from My Cowboy Heart to a bunch of other books. Among the best of these are Love Lessons and Fall Hard.
My Cowboy Heart is beautifully written and set in New Mexico, but I find myself happy to savor a chapter or two, then cut out to something else. Maybe I'm worried about where the story is headed. (Head 'em off at the pass.)

Just started Merman and enjoying it so far, though it's a bit different than what i expected which is having Marrowbone more central somehow.
I liked My Cowboy Heart (btw, don't worry!). I'm also reading Fall Hard but taking breaks from it to read, well, Mongrel, Merman, and re-read the Dangerous Ground series. I'm not sure where Fall Hard is headed... we'll find out soon :-)
Well I've got to the end of my marathon read of the year which was David Jones' In Parenthesis In Parenthesis. I'm still reeling as you are when a book has taken you somewhere completely different - the Western front and Mametz Wood in 1916 in this case- a life changing read. I have no idea what to read next and in fact I don't think I will be able to turn to anything else for a while...
I read Love Lessons yesterday. It was sweet, sugary sweet and almost went overboard in the epilogue but it still was the most perfect read in my tired hungover state yesterday. I loved it :)
Ame wrote: "I read Love Lessons yesterday. It was sweet, sugary sweet and almost went overboard in the epilogue but it still was the most perfect read in my tired hungover state yesterday.
