Ame | 1744 comments So I finished Jory and Sam's story, all of them, and loved it. I also ended up buying the last book in the series, Duncan and Aaron's but was very disappointed with that one, it was nowhere near as engaging as the previous books.

And NOW I'm finally reading Zero at the bone. Halfway through and I really like it. Is this the only thing the author has written? Because she'sso good iit's kind of unbelievable that this is her first or only book.

Afterthought.... why on earth is Aaron written with 2 a's? It's only confusing.

It's always an enigma when someone writes a single well-received book and then never writes anything else.

message 1604: by Ame (new)

Ame | 1744 comments Could be a different name, she must have written something more. I do often wonder with one hit wonders if the authors have been working on their books for years, rewriting and polishing and once it's out you're kind of like dried up. I don't know.

I remember on my chick lit phase I came across a writer who'd published three novels in very short period who were very good and then nothing after that. For ten years she hasn't published any more books which I find sad because she was a talented writer.

She is alive and kicking, but as far as I know she didn't write anything else. She had promised a sequel for ''Zero''.

Before she had written at least in one fandom. That is ''Zero'' is another product of that fandom, the Brokeback Mountain fandom.

You are evil, Hambel! :)

Funny thing is that BDSM is really not my kink at all. But when it is written by a person who is in the lifestyle or who knows how to convey the thoughts and feelings of the people and why they are into it (Heidi Cullinan springs to mind), then I can easily go there in a book.

Anyone wanting ME to submit will get his balls fed to him.

I remember that.

It's interesting. But there could be many factors at work.

Actually, now that I think of it, it might be the fandom thing. I do know of several writers who finished within a fandom and apparently never felt the need to write more.

Thanks for noticing :D

The D/s part of BDSM is one of my favourite genres, but like you said thoughts and emotions have to be there otherwise it's just two (or more) people going through the motions and that's not interesting (or hot) at all.

Jane blogged in Jan of this year that she had been working on a sequel. It was only after she was into it for a bit that she realized it would work as the third book in the series. She said she then stopped, but didn't know how she wanted to proceed. She does have three or four Zero shorts on her site.

I feel like I'm on a roll with books I've really enjoyed lately. So those I've especially liked (including of course, The Haunted Heart) are:

Glitterland by Alexis Hall The Magpie Lord (A Charm of Magpies, #1) by K.J. Charles Spook Squad (PsyCop, #7) by Jordan Castillo Price Merman (Mongrel, #2) by K.Z. Snow

I bought Merman right away when it came out, but saved it. Maybe I was a little wary, since I loved Mongrel. Silly me. K.Z., you've created an amazing series (trilogy?).

K.J., you too! I'm also looking forward to the next one.

JCP is on my auto-buy list. I love this series and it just gets better.

Fortunately, I'm another one of the readers who skipped the hype for Glitterland, because hype tends to put me off as well. I read the excerpt on the Riptide site awhile back and pre-ordered. I think it was a very strong first (or nearly?) book.

message 1620: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments I just finished Lorcan's Desire by S.J.D. Peterson. It's quite the roller coaster of emotion.

I have heard lots of good things about The Magpie Lord from people I trust. It's on my list to read sometime this week.

Did it hang the moon? No. Is it a good book worth your time, definitely."

I did exactly the same thing, and my reaction is similar too. Insofar as I have become aware of any hype, it was only after I read it.

I'm fascinated by all promotion and marketing now because of my own situation. It is very weird going it alone without the support of a publisher. It feels precarious. No question.

And while it is true that most of my publishers did not expend any amazing promo effort on my behalf, there was generally *some* (certainly from Carina Press). Plus just being with a publisher gives you a boost. A considerable boost, really. Given that every publisher has its built-in reader base. Some are more clearly defined than others (the Samhain Café) and some are more effective than others (Dreamspinner) but either way, going through a publisher gives you a natural boost.

It is one of the big incentives for going through a publisher (and why I don't think self-publishing is a good option for a new writer).

I think Riptide is very energetic and active on the promotion front. And that is something to consider. One reason I was going to go with Entangled was their promo machine. I wanted that machine behind me. But the contract was a no-go. And although we probably could have worked it out, I'm pretty skittish. I'm that classic example of preferring to go with the devil I know. ;-)

Anyway, it's a huge, huge relief Haunted Heart has done as well as it has given that it's all me. All me and you. There is no promo machine behind me, beyond word of mouth from readers.

I do want to continue to use publishers -- it's too exhausting to do everything myself every single time -- but I also plan to continue to self-publish. And I feel reassured about that decision as I watched various book launches last month.

As you have said many times, the best promotion an author can have is a well-crafted story. Something you produce in spades each time out of the gate! :)

KC | 4897 comments I started yesterday Astrid Amara's The Valde: Water. After this one, i will be officially out of Astrid books to read :( Hopefully she will have something out soon! but i'll wait patiently, of course.

After that, i have these in mind: Provoked, Mnevermind, Mongrel, Last Stop, and the first Claire deWitt.

Lady*M | 197 comments If you are taking suggestions - Mongrel, then Mnevermind.

The Magpie Lord was awesome, I can't believe it's a debut novel. Here's the short review. Now I'm reading Black Hawk Tattoo. So far, so good.

What am I not reading right now? Ha! Too many books on my to-read pile, and I just realized that my current fave YA trilogy just released the third book today. OMG, so I need to add that to my currently reading list.

I'm rereading the second to last Infected book by Andrea Speed, well, skimming it, so I can prepare to read Undertow soon. I just finished Death Claims last night and also read the two novellas from the Angel's Ink series yesterday: The Asylum Interviews: Trixie and The Asylum Interviews: Bronx. If you need a good intro to the series, these are both prequels and great openers! So now I'm ready to read Dead Man's Deal just as soon as I read Undertow.

But let's not forget I still need to read Lord of the White Hell - Book Two this month and I want to finish Mercedes Lackey's Arrows of the Queen trilogy too. One more book to go. And I started the Foundation Trilogy over the summer. Two more books to go for that one.

I got a signed book over the weekend: Forced to Kill, which is book two in the series, so I'm borrowing the first book First to Kill from the library so I can get caught up. It looks super good!

And since I read Golden Witchbreed last month, I now have to read the second book, which I've been hoarding from the library all summer Ancient Light.

Um... did I mention our BOM book too? There are just too many series' that I need to finish and continue! But in reality, there is no such thing as too many books. I'm loving every single one of them!

And if anyone cares, the YA trilogy is as follows: Croak, Scorch, and Rogue. Fantastic series about a teenage grim reaper. I've met the author and she's fantastic to talk to. Rogue should be arriving on Thursday! Eeek! lol.

Please let us know what you think of this one. This is the only book of hers that I haven't read yet because I think I read somewhere that it needs a sequel. I'd love to hear if there's a significant cliffhanger or if it's wrapped up by the end. Thanks!

As for new material by her, she posted earlier this year on her blog that her "giant alternative universe romance set during the Crimean War" is done but needs some rewrites and editing so it won't be released until 2014. She later revealed the title: The Devil Lancer. She also promises "a Hanukkah romance, a contemporary romance, and a sci-fi sequel to A Policy of Lies this year." Great news!

EDIT: Well, we've had Demolished already so two to go! Really looking forward to the Lies sequel. Loved that book.
