Both Secrets and Scrabble audiobooks: Murder at Pirate's Cove and Secret at Skull House. Matt Haynes is a lovely narrator. I adore his calm and collected Jack voice. And it's even funnier to hear Ellery's reasoning aloud. Effective suspense too. :)

Alison | 4756 comments I've read some cool books lately!
--Master of Restless Shadows by Ginn Hale. Cadeleon book five! It was awesome! So excited for the last book!
--Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater. Really imaginative spinoff of The Raven Cycle. I really enjoyed it.
--Slippery Creatures by KJ Charles. So good. This author is brilliant, every single time.
--To the Flame by AE Ross. Fascinating story about a non-binary mothperson and their crush. It's very vivid and a little unusual. Mothpeople are not creatures I knew much about before, so I learned something new!

KC | 4897 comments Read Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, which was absolutely fantastic. It's funny, insightful, heartwarming, and uplifting. Every event, good or bad, is handled with care, and it kept surprising me throughout. It's been a while since I read a book where I felt I really, really didn't want it to end, and I'm already looking forward to rereading it.

I just started the audiobook for Felix Ever After and so far I'm really enjoying it! It has a slight New Adult feel to it, though it's YA. I don't really read much YA these days. I'm pretty much over it, but sometimes things grab me. This one is about a young transgender man continuing to figure out his gender identity.

I'm also reading Beastly Bones, another YA novel. Gosh, so much YA lately. lol. But this is book two in the series, and I'm enjoying a bit of paranormal Sherlock Holmes. :-)

Thank you for the rec. I had a look at the excerpt and I liked it. And apparently the protagonist is demisexual!

I decided to order it on paper, also because the e-book was quite expensive.

Completely agree! I read this right through, often laughing out loud. I don't know how Alexis manages to convey all of this human silliness in regards to trends, jargon, and preconceptions and yet never seems mean or petty with it. It always seems right on. Delightful book.

Antonella | 11563 comments A friend of mine just recommended this book, which she read in Italian: The Many-Headed Hydra: Sailors, Slaves, Commoners, and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic by Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker.

See also: Revolution at the docks
Sukhdev Sandhu on the slaves and radicals at the heart of Empire in «The Many-Headed Hydra» by Marcus Rediker and Peter Linebaugh

«The older world of docks and quays is the territory of Marcus Rediker and Peter Linebaugh's magnificent study, The Many-Headed Hydra . The authors chart the process by which powerless and dispossessed peoples - commoners, felons, religious radicals, pirates, urban labourers, soldiers, sailors, and African slaves - were, from the early 15th to the 17th centuries, marshalled into serving the cause of colonial expansion. A common metaphor, used by philosophers such as Francis Bacon, was the need for Hercules (regal authority, imperial rule, mercantile self-interest) to "strangle the Hydra of misrule". Hydra, in this context, refers to anyone - lippy prole and conscientious objector alike - who stood in the way of profit.»

And in a side scene of the book Andrea Camilleri, Montalbano, and the actor playing Montalbano in the TV series, Luca Zingaretti, talk together. Montalbano is pissed because people thinks that Zingaretti has better detective skills than him ;-).

Antonella | 11563 comments I've just ordered The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste because as Italian antifascist it is a matter of principle for me ;-).

But according to «The Guardian» it should be also a good read:
The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste review – remembering Ethiopia’s female soldiers Set during Italy’s 1935 invasion of Ethiopia, this absorbing novel spotlights the African women who went to war.

So I should have time to read it before «Harriett» filmmaker Kasi Lemmons directs a film from the book.

You can still read all of it for free online here: https://ohumanstar.com

But the paperbacks of book one and two are very much worth the effort.

Murderbot Diaries books 1-5: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1919...

I read Book 5 along with the audiobook Network Effect narrated by Kevin R. Free (narrator of Josh's Holmes & Moriarty series)! And it was helpful to hear this novel-length book read aloud, as I think I would have otherwise been a bit lost in during the complicated "techie" part of the climax.

Tor.com offered the first four novellas free back in April, but I missed out on two of them as freebies. Calathea and KC have also rated the novellas highly. :)

Sci-fi/space adventure with four novellas and one (#5) full length novel. Book 6 is scheduled for 2021. Not m/m, but includes rainbow characters. The protagonist is... asexual... non-sexual... anti-sexual? ;)

Alison | 4756 comments Speaking of Ginn Hale, I just came across a long and lovely interview she did last year. I think it's from around when Master of Restless Shadows came out, and she talks a lot about Cadeleon (no spoilers). It's a podcast, but there's also a transcript if you go down the page a bit. It's interesting and informative and I quite enjoyed it.

So after the last book comes out, I’m starting over from the beginning. I tried to read book 3, and was so lost because I’ve forgotten everything from the first two books, so I decided to wait and read them all back to back.
