I loved the first two or three m/m books she wrote, but the next ones, though still good, tended to meander a bit, imo.
But this cozy mystery was perfect, I felt. Hope you enjoy it! :-)

Mr. Big Empty is the first in his YA paranormal series. It’s definitely also in Ashe’s angsty wild ride style. :) I raced through the first three and then had to take a step back. For those readers who either openly or as a guilty pleasure enjoyed TV series like Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf it should be on your list.

This is one of those books where i feel wary of even considering the sequel, especially given the perfection, pretty much, of the first book. A bit similar to how i feel about the sequels to To Kill a Mockingbird and The Handmaid's Tale. It doesn't mean the sequels can't be/aren't great, of course. So if you do read it, looking forward to your impressions.

Well said. I never read the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird — I love that book too much.

But I'm most probably going to read The Testaments, sequel to The Handmaid's Tale. I'm intrigued where Margaret Atwood will take us with it. In fact, I'm planning on reading it ASAP (or at least sometime during this winter...).

Maybe I'll just wait for Mymymble to report back how she liked Find Me and decide after that if I'll read it or not.

Confession time. I never finished reading Call Me By Your Name. I participated in the BOM discussion and then stopped reading at 68% (the end of Part 2). Because of... reasons having a lot to do with voice. So I also never watched the film, thinking I’d come back to the book when I was in a different state of mind. I read the description of Find Me in my local independent bookstore’s newsletter today. Now I’m inclined to reread and finish the first and read the second book.

For those of you in the Boston area:

André Aciman

In his new book, "Find Me" Aciman revisits the complex and beguiling characters we first met in his bestseller "Call Me By Your Name." Making a spellbinding exploration of the varieties of love, he questions whether true love ever dies.

My confession... I never read the book (and likely never will *gasp*). I watched the film several times, though. I love it. A little bird told me that it ends way before the book. I'm glad it did. :)

WMD | 251 comments I really enjoyed Tallowwood by N.R. Walker. A serial murder and mm romance. I have read a number of books by Walker, most if not all placed in Australia. This felt complete, complex and rich. Much of her work is straight forward romance, I like the richer context of the mystery, police procedural, big shot detective constable working with small town police department. My other favorite from her is Sixty Five Hours, romance in the advertising workplace.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments I'm currently slogging my way through The Guardianship of Julian St. Albans.

I loved The Courtship of Julian St. Albans, and The Apprenticeship of Julian St. Albans was pretty good, so I don't want to leave the series halfway through the third book, but it's tough going.

Note to authors: reading about characters being stuck in their apartment working, eating meals, and playing video games is boring! It rather mirrors the readers' own lives, which is not why we're reading fantasy romances to begin with. I don't want to read a blow-by-blow of the character's Minecraft game.

Thanks, Jordan. Since I had your permission, I returned it to KU and picked up The Actor and the Earl in its place.

I probably won't get to that one for a while, though, until I attend to my expiring library books (not to mention the nine other KU books I have out). Not Dead Yet is next.

I’m currently still reading The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. It’s good, not quite what I was expecting, though I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but it’s taking me forever to read it! I just don’t seem to have the time or the motivation that I did for the first few chapters that were really good.

Brenda S (bsnyd1) | 187 comments I read Spellbound too. I enjoyed it, really loved the world building. But it got a little sloppy storytelling-wise and went into some tropes I don't particularly care for as it went on. Will have to look at Bone Rider!

Currently I'm reading Ann Cleeves new one, The Long Call. Really good so far, but wow do I have thoughts!!

The comments on Bone Rider reminded me of how cool it can be to use the search window marked “search discussion posts” located in the upper right side of the page. If you type in “Bone Rider” you’ll find that some of us were reading and recommending it back in 2013. The mentions lately tempt me to reread it to see how I feel now. I really liked it then.

I’m on Chapter 29 of 37 in the Gideon the Ninth audiobook. I love the way it’s read. The narrator’s differentiation of voices has really helped me with the large cast of characters. I read the sample and realized that audio was the way for me to go with this. I ordered a hardcover copy as well, because I have a feeling this is a series I may want to revisit at a leisurely pace.

message 15700: by Brenda (last edited Nov 17, 2019 11:13AM) (new)

Brenda S (bsnyd1) | 187 comments Oh man, I was getting really emotionally overwhelmed by Ann Cleeves' Matthew from The Long Call (who is VERY HEAVILY autistic-coded, but again, not named as autistic, so non-autistic people can still pretend that he's just 'quirky', while particularly so-called "high-functioning" autistic people continue to feel wrong and isolated and die by suicide at 9 times the rate of the general population, because they don't fit into "normal" society.

And... it's just not right that our way of being is so beautifully and eloquently used for 'drama' and 'conflict' and 'entertainment', but we don't get any benefit from that representation, and in fact this *hurts* us because it allows people to dismiss and discount us when we ask as autistic people, for understanding, because beautiful portrayals of autistic people like Matthew are purposely not recognized for what they are, because they don't fit the narrow and just plain wrong stereotype that far too many non-autistic people believe. So many strong mixed emotions about this!!! ARGH! And just a short list off the top of my head of other characters who are heavily autistic-coded, but not identified as such, in addition to Josh's Sam Kennedy:

Dr. Spencer Reid – Criminal Minds [the actor and creator both stated in print that the character is autistic, but it’s never outright stated on the show, so there are STILL people who will argue til they're blue in the face that he’s not autistic… GRRRRRR!!!]
Newt Scamander – Fantastic Beasts
Sylvia Tilly – Star Trek: Discovery
Ray Palmer – Legends of Tomorrow).

A n y w a y, so I needed something to switch off to so I could get my emotions back under control, so I started Charlie Adhara's The Wolf at the Door, which is extremely excellent so far!!
