I read the original series and loved it, excellent and well written, but at the same time found it a bit on the depressing side (and, if i remember correctly, maybe without the charm of the Joseph Hansen books, for example), so once was enough for me, but would gladly hear your thoughts on it/them.

Oh wow, I... think you may have just found something for me that I have been looking for off and on for a long time. Back in the (pre-internet) day, I'd seen a reference to a 'gay PI detective series', but I didn't remember the author or the character's name. I've looked for it periodically, but never put the right search words together to bring it up. I recognize the character's name now, *this* was the series. Thank you!!!

You’re welcome!

We did a yearlong challenge read a few years ago with the Brandstetter series, and I highly recommend them!

I also highly recommend the Henry Rios series by Michael Nava, which was inspired by the Brandstetter series.

But Dave is my favorite. :-) and I believe Dave was the very first out gay detective.

Alison | 4756 comments I finished Amnesty, final book of Lara Elena Donnelly's Amberlough series last night and man, it's killer good. This is an amazing series. It's an AU queer historical political series about spies and fascism and the underworld and war and the aftermath and it's gripping. The world resembles our world maybe 100 or so years ago--there are cars and radios and movies and fascism is on the rise. It's not a romance, but there is an intense love story at the heart of the series that is heartwrenching and is much more the focus of the last book. There are excellent characters that are real and flawed and make all kinds of mistakes and are very endearing despite not being terribly "nice" people. Questionable morality all around. I loved it.

I finished reading The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World earlier this week and wrote up this review, if anyone is interested: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also finished (and loved!) the audiobook for Life, Some Assembly Required, the sequel to Life Lessons. For some reason I didn't do a full review of the first book, though I really, really, really loved it, but I did write one for the second book last night: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Hmm. I wonder if what typically happens is young adults prefer to read about adult life--they're looking forward. And adults like reading YA because they're feeling nostalgic for a simpler time in their life?

Right?!

Well, since my Dad is currently reading Dean Koontz, I thought I would bring a paperback with me when Adrien and I visit my parents later this week. I'm planning to start Strangers, which is getting turned into a tv show at some point.

But, I also have The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump currently checked out of the library, and I can't renew it because of the wait list so... we'll see which one I start tomorrow.

After these, I'll jump into both book group books. It took me so long to get through the last two, I need a bit of a break, even though I'm seriously looking forward to both of them this month. :-)

I just finished listening to The Handmaid's Tale: Special Edition. I have to admit I haven't read Margaret Atwood before. And I haven't seen the hugely popular TV series. BUT I was impressed by the book. The story left me pondering the fact how stories like this (fictional, but rich with historic content) aren't only about history, but also about future. And scarily, about today. This special edition audio book ends with highly interesting, newly added extra material which made the story even more compelling to me. Extras analyze the story from different angles. I especially loved hearing the afterword from the author herself.

I think what I was most impressed about—and what I didn't expect the story to be—was the fact how much the story resonates with current events in world politics. Right now my head is spinning with thoughts like these: How terrifyingly easily in certain circumstances people can be manipulated. How easily inhumane can become a norm. When you have to operate in survival mode, what does it do to you as a person. Not so joyful thoughts. But intriguing, all the same.

Oh, and the book was narrated by Claire Danes whose calm voice suited the story perfectly, I thought: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Handma...

I also found out that more than 30 years after writing the first book, Atwood has now written the sequel, The Testaments, which is coming out in a couple of months. Interesting to see how it will be.

Claire Danes was a great narrator for The Handmaid’s Tale! I didn’t get extra stuff at the end of mine though.

I don’t feel a need to watch the show. I read the book to prepare for the opera, and that was enough.

But, if you liked that one, you might also like The Power, by Naomi Alderman. Eye opening too.

I just started reading The Threat, last night and I really like it so far. He has an easy going way of writing, similar to James Comey. Plus, it’s just fascinating what it takes to get into the FBI and how it works.
