I agree with all recs by Anne (excepting Alyssa Cole which I don't know), especially about The Fifth Season. I was on the brink of buying Saunder's Lincoln in the Bardo and then I decided that I should slow down a bit, but one of my favourite critics was enthusiastic about it.

Alyssa Cole is f/m both historical and contemporary. Very good books that also have taught me things I didn’t know, about the US civil war for instance.

WMD | 251 comments (Not necessarily newly published, but new to me in 2018 and highly rated by me.)

First, to back up endorsements of The Last Sun (K. D. Edwards), Where Do I Start (Chase Taylor Hackett), the Pinx Video Mysteries (not mm romance, but gay main character), Object of Desire (Dal MacLean), and Josh Lanyon's 2018 work, particularly The Magician Murders and The Ghost Had an Early Checkou; and K.J. Charles's 2018 works (Henchmen of Zenda, Band Sinister, Unfit to Print).

Below is a list of other books of mm romance or mm mystery that I read in 2018 and highly rated! Some.of these I found thru this threads earlier recommendations, so thank you!

The Gilded Scarab (Lancaster's Luck 1) by Anna Butler
The Jackal’s House) (Lancaster's Luck 2) by Anna Butler
-steam-punk Victorian Londinium

Chaos Stationseries (book 1 thru 5) By Kelly Jensen and Jennifer Burke-likable MCs; space opera with a lighter post-war tone and both the wonders and the fears of space travel

To See the Sun by Kelly Jensen- a classic pioneer tale about love in the wild west (on the edge of civilized space)

Box 1663 by Alex Sorrel-espionage and mm romance U.S. against the backdrop of WWII and top secret scientific research. Comes across as well researched with the feel of film noir

Salt Magic, Skin Magic by Lee Welch-Part fairy tale part historical family drama, set in an historical England with magic.

A Ferry of Bones & Gold by Hailey Turner (Soulbound book 1) - Fantasy, whole complex magic world with lots of background mystery involving MC much of which is revealed in book. Magical law enforcement.

Witchmark by C.L. Polk-fantasy in post-WWI style England. Lovely old world feel for much of book. Last chapters a little rushed.

Badlands by Morgan Brice-Cop and Psychic, ghosts, demons and crime.

The California Dashwoods by Lisa Henry-An mm retelling of Sense and Sensibility.

Lock Nut (The Plumber' Mate series Book 5) by J.L. Morrow-One of my favorite series.

Darke Accused: A Darke and Flare Mystery (A Darke and Flare mystery) by Parker Avrile-Mm mystery, ex-cop and undercover agent as anti heroes caught up in a small town mystery. In looking this one up, just realized the second one is out :)

Where Death Meets the Devil by L.J. Hayward-Military spy action with mm romance; read all the codas before going on to book 2
Y
Risk Taker (Mixed Messages series) by Lily Morton-MM romance, likable MCs, good series.

Jordan Castillo Price's work for 2019:
Agent Bayne (Psycops 9)- One of my top series.
Imperfect Match-Post apocalyptic; great!
Zero Hour -Re-print; Post apocalyptic; great great!

How To Be A Normal Person by T.J Klune
Laughs. Tears. Grief. Love. Laughs. Asexual main character(s)

Mr. Big Empty ( Hollow Folk series) by Gregory Ashe
This is an interestingly different and (very) lengthy series bout young mm love in a small town; the story grows and changes, includes conspiracies, mysteries, super human powers, and small town evils. This series has some physical/emotional abuse by parent; and some small town and poverty misery and despair, but I think doesn't approach the darkness of Ashe's Hazard and Somerset series.

At the more erotica, alt.love and bdsm/power exchange end of things, I enjoyed reading Kris Ripper's Scientific Method Universe books, starting with Catalysts: The Scientific Method She also has more mainstream mm romances, and of those, I particularly recommend The Ghost in the Penthouse: A Romance.

Got a surprise gift from a dear friend this weekend: Ben Monopoli's Mateo Was Here. This is a sequel to The Painting of Porcupine City! I remember several of you liking that one. The sequel was published only a couple of weeks ago! I haven't read it yet, but I wanted to let you all know in case you're as excited about this as I am. :-D

Finished a marathon read into the wee hours this morning of book two in the Darke and Flare series that WMD just mentioned. These are intelligently written action-suspense mysteries with complex plots, and convincing sexual/romantic interludes (not the same old/same old). The Double: A Darke and Flare Mystery

KC | 4897 comments Read a mainstream mystery I really enjoyed - Ben H. Winters' The Last Policeman. It's set in a pre-apocalyptic earth. The writing is really good, minimalist and capturing humanness, which is something that always reminds me of Hansen even if everything else is different.

Antonella | 11564 comments I've read the wonderful Our Souls at Night. Absolutely recommended. You could even read it in one go, but it would be a waste. It is romantic, but not sappy. It left me a bit sad, but also hopeful.

It is not m/m.

Perhaps KC already mentioned this sweet book, Up! by Al Stewart and Claire Davis? This is a short novella about two young college-age artists/students who are (as one self-describes) “atypical” and have experienced similar “downs.” Together they find their way back “up.” The writing is both poetic and realistic. I appreciated that the nurturing adult in this story was Luke’s dad.

Oh, it was Antonella who listed it on the Freebies discussion, and it’s still free at Smashwords. :) https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

I love this duo. Their stories usually deal with difficult subjects, yet at the same time manage to be sweet and heartwarming and uplifting.

WMD | 251 comments Was e-shelving my books from 2018 and realized I forgot to list two refreshingly different alt.historical mm books:
One Night in Boukos
Something Human both by A.J. Demas
Very loosely Mediterranean and British Empire feeling, with mixing of imaginary cultures and mores. Cleverly historical feel without pinning to any actual historical moment or real place.

Susinok | 5205 comments I am listening to Transposition, book 2 in the Hazard and Somerset mystery series by Gregory Ashe. Well done so far.

I finally caved and signed up for KDP. I have been reading books from new authors that I would normally not have bought. One find was Edie Danford. She has some complex characters I really loved.

message 15177: by WMD (new)

WMD | 251 comments I was one that was finding the Hazard and Somerset series highly pleasing. I just want to state one more time that the most recent book, Criminal Past Book 6, had a prolonged kidnap/torture scene, some extreme homophobic talk, and graphic details of an assault years ago. It felt like a mismatch to the series as a whole, very intense and not necessarily for the same audience. Having endorsed the series repeatedly here, I just wanted to state my caveat one more time,..you might want to stop at book 5. I think those characters need to grab their daughter and get the heck out of that awful town.

I agree that Book 6 was a really difficult read, but so many things in prior books were just as disturbing to me, while not as graphic. My "shelves"/tags for this one included graphic-violence, uber-villain, and you-think-too-much. Ending the series at Book 5 is a definite option, but I sensed that things were heading this way and was somewhat prepared.

I've been reading another series with very graphic violence and some extremely repellent thoughts expressed by the bad guys, and was determined to give up on it. Then the MCs finally got together and I'm willing to try yet another episode. Not sure what that means about me...

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I am reading and reviewing a pile of manga romances for Harlequin. These are m/f romance stories which are now published in manga format. I like the occasional manga and I was really pleased when Dreamspinner published the manga format of Frog.

Some of the manga romances are a bit so so but quite a few are really good and I am having fun reviewing them. I am also reading Seance on a Summer's Night and really enjoying it. I like the ghostly aspect of the story and the characters in the story are all so intriguing.
