So, in my world-building class today, someone talked about a bit of magic in their story that reminded me a tad of Bone Rider. When I mentioned the book, and described what it's about, nearly everyone wanted to read it! Someone has already jumped on it and started to read it, since class got out at 12:30pm and after only reading half of the first page said he has nothing to say about it except 10/10. :-)

This is one of those super awesome books that's also hard to recommend to most people, I think, but it's still super awesome. I'm very interested to see how he likes the rest of it, and how anyone else likes it if they actually get to reading it. I can't believe the response during class was nearly instant interest.

I'm also feeling a need to reread it now. I first read it nearly a year ago when I got stuck in LA for a week after our Catalina visit. I had nothing to do for a week except sit by the hotel pool and read books on my kindle for several days. Best vacation ever! lol. Aside from meeting Josh the week before, of course. :-) Also, I mention this, because I really felt that reading Bone Rider in the warn sun, by the pool, with nothing else to worry me, was the best way to read it. And the best way to spend a day off. :-)

Just finished Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. Sooo good! And pinging my inspiration radar for my own characters. It’s funny how I was writing a scene this morning about how he needed to be very still (learning to live in the moment, sort of) and then her main character has a need for stillness. Similar, and yet, different. Anyway, I highly recommend this one. Plus, the MC is ace, (kinda like mine... how odd!) and another character is transgender. :-)

I’m reading it now (about 2/3 through), due to your recommendation. Thanks! It’s a really, really a well-done and engaging mystery. This is a debut novel? Wow!

Also, whether intentionally or not, it’s Lanyonesque (that’s a word, right?) ;) I mean that in a very positive sense, whether due to inspiration, homage, or pleasant coincidence. It has the flavor of Josh’s stories. Think Winter Kill on the opposite coast. But set in an alt-reality with shifters. :)

Just started The Fifth Season, and only 2-3 pages in I'm not sure about the narration style. But then, I was likely just having an issue concentrating in general.

I admit that the beginning is a bit hard, but you just to resist in the first pages. It is really wonderful afterwards.

Read an excellent mystery: The Slow Road to Hell: A Gay Murder Mystery. This is the author's first book, so i'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

And another good mystery that was recommended here: The Wolf at the Door, which I enjoyed, but somehow there was a little something missing, can't quite put my finger on it, because the writing and mystery are good, the characters fun, and there's humor too.

Both are more gay mysteries than m/m, though there is romance in both.

I binge read the original 8 books. The last one tore me up and ended at such a perfect place that I haven't read any others that came after them. I did buy two more, so I'll get to them eventually.

I don’t usually read biographies, especially auto-biographies. I mean how many real lives are more interesting than fictions? :-)

But being a mega fan of Suede (since 1992), it’s hard not to pick up their frontman Brett Anderson’s autobiography Coal Black Mornings.

I wasn’t expecting much, i know I’m biased, but oh my, Brett turns out to be such an excellent writer. Even better than his lyrics.

The book is about his life up to just before Suede hit “big” time, so it’s more about growing up in poverty in England, his extraordinary parents, the dreams and struggles. Very well written, I’d recommend it to even non Suede fans.

Suede is relatively unknown in US, but outside UK, they were also ridiculously popular in Hong Kong (and Sweden, I heard).

I haven't really been able to concentrate in almost any kind of reading lately (too much going on in my everyday life), so it was actually a big relief to finally read through a whole book and enjoy it. And to enjoy the fact that it took me out of my real life for a bit. So... thanks!

Something a bit similar happened to me: I started it and then I had it sitting there for a couple of days and after I picked it up again it felt like the story really started to flow (or maybe it was my reading, LOL).

Johanna, I enthusiastically second Clary's comments. IMO this sequel is at least as humorous as its predecessor, and perhaps even funnier. I am so looking forward to the third book in the series.

Almost halfway through The Fifth Season... it’s ok. I’m interested in the earth magic, but the rest isn’t holding my attention very well. So we’ll see how far I get. I’ve got other library books piling up and a longish list of people waiting for this one...

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that it is a bit disappointing for you.

For me it was mind-blowing, because it is a powerful statement about oppression, racism, discrimination, and so on, all in a indirect way, not preachy, but organically sewed in an intricate plot and an incredible world building.

In comments from the author, he said he knew it was going to be a challenge to show Jeffrey evolving into a likable character. IMO he succeeded brilliantly. Hope you enjoy the read. :)

What I find so brilliant is that the author never really makes Jeffrey that nice person. I mean, he not resurrected in any way. He's still an asshole but an asshole that you can love and deserves HEA. He's still an asshole though. But so is his boyfriend ;-)

I enjoyed both books by Hackett (where Do I start and The Next Thing You Know). They are written in first person, and we get a lot of the characters thinking and the like, which I really enjoy with the right characters. Something interesting about the writing style. He has written for theatre, and there is occasional word play, dialogue, and scene setting that evokes that. FYI these are fade to black books in terms of any sex. Is there confirmation that there will be a third book?

Recommending Lynn Van Dorn's books for humor, good characters, and active (ahem!) sex scenes. The prequel short Be My Mistake was more erotic/kinky, with tons of 80s movie references. The full book Damage Control is a complete m/m romance book with some complex twists on familiar themes (fake boyfriend, a little age difference, a little bit unrequited love-second chance, a little bit thriller). Also enjoyed her Reunion, first in a planned series, which had that whole 'crazy people live in Florida' vibe.

Jeffrey is an asshole in particularly lawyer-like ways. That's part of the brilliance of this book. This author really knows lawyers.
