Haven't heard of the Oreos challenge, but I've lived with teenage boys and I'm not curious.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments Ame wrote: "Oh dear god. Not Oreos. I'm guessing none of you have worked with teenage boys and have heard of the Oreo challenge?"

In my innocence, I thought that the Oreo challenge was where you had to guess each flavor of Oreo, blindfolded, and I'd prefer to adhere to my delusions, please.

(I'd never do even that with a teenage boy, though. Anyone with an older sibling knows that "open your mouth and close your eyes/and you will get a big surprise" never has a HEA).

To un-derail the topic, I just downloaded Trowchester Blues from the library; thanks for the suggestion!

I'm going to be tremedously disappointed when my New York library discovers I've moved away and revokes my library card (I think I have until August until their biennial "library card suspension unless you show up and prove you're alive" review). They're so good about buying Live-Brary e-books I've recommended (77 out of 82 purchased). So far I haven't got a single purchase from my new Delaware or Florida accounts.

And I'm off the rails again.

Ame | 1744 comments Of course the Oreo challenge doesn't have to be exclusive to Oreos. Just as long as the cookies have cream fillings.

You guys got me all curious and I had to check what did I read in my bright, sweet Rifter afterglow while missing Basawar like crazy. :-)

I read Joseph Hansen's The Man Everybody Was Afraid Of (Brandstetter #4). Not many things Hansen's writing can't cure. Or at least to make it feel more tolerable. But yeah, I still constantly miss Basawar. :-D

LOL. Totally Oreo-specific. The cream is okay, but I don't like the texture of the cookie part, and the texture somehow takes over the taste. In general, double cookies are awesome. :-)

Oh, wow, a book of magic posters! That’s very exciting, all on its own.

A Marriage of a Thousand Lies was very good! So odd though, to read something set in the place where I live. But fun too. It was not an easy read though, emotionally. And I’m wondering how realistic it was. I might do some minor research on that later.

KC | 4897 comments Reading two books I'm enjoying atm:
- Call Me by Your Name - beautiful!
- Pretty Pretty Boys - mystery recommended here when Josh asked about m/m mysteries, and so far so good.

And once in a while i get back to a nonfiction I started a while back: How Not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them—A Misstep-by-Misstep Guide. I read the sample and thought, exactly! and it was also funny in places. Anyway, the result of having their examples in mind, is that I tried and then deleted most of the fluffy-romance samples on my Kindle... It's so difficult to find a really well-written, engaging story... Of course, it's always a bit difficult to get into the fluffy ones when reading a really good book at the same time.

How Not To Write looks interesting! I’ll have to check it out.

I just got the book Josh recommended about writers resistance. I haven’t started reading it yet. I’ve still got seven more books to read this month for our pride list.

That said, I finally started Agent Bayne yesterday to get me over my unmotivated slump. Soooo good! But I’ll need to read it in bits and pieces around these other books. I’ll savor it.

I’m about to start David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBT Music. Mostly British, I’ve been told, but hopefully still good and interesting.

I'll be interested in your thoughts on Pretty Pretty Boys. For me, it was a bit love/hate and some suspension of disbelief, but still 4-4.5 stars. It's a more original story than the blurb lets on. I was also inspired to read all three (so far) of new-to-me author Gregory Ashe's Hollow Folk series. The first, Mr. Big Empty, is emotionally difficult, but also kind of amazing. I'll start the sequel to Pretty Pretty after I finish Call Me by Your Name.

Here's a link to my review/notes on Pretty Pretty Boys, but I'd suggest checking them out after you finish reading, in case you, like me, prefer not to let someone else's thoughts influence your take on what you're still reading. :) https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I was just going to note that Ashe's Transposition (the second Somerset and Hazard book, after Pretty Pretty Boys) is now available, as mentioned by Karen. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first. Here are some reasons why (view spoiler)This one is (almost) all about the mystery. A classic plot.

Also as mentioned by Karen, Ashe has another series out. I just raced through the first three of his Hollow Folk Series this weekend. A very dark /very little on-screen sex, psychic/fantasy action series with gay MC in high school. I ran right through them, and agree they were pretty great and different. Long books. Some potential triggers, though, (view spoiler) I would say its a really harsh Buffy scenario: high school kid(s) solving brutal mystic crimes 'cause adults really aren't up to it. I will add that though I am recommending his work, this author seriously needs a better editor than spellcheck.

Finally: I recommend Marshall Thornton's second Pinx Video book which is now available, Hidden Treasures. I liked it even better than the first, five star. Not a romance (yet?); gay MC. Make sure to read these in order.

message 14098: by KC (new)

KC | 4897 comments Karen wrote: "KC wrote: "...Pretty Pretty Boys...mysteries..."

I wasn't sure how to rate it either, then decided on 5. I found it really engaging - the mystery, the flawed MCs, the story. When I started it I expected it to be a romance as well, but it's really not, even though the setup is sort of there, in the making, so I'm curious to see where he'll take them. A bit wary of it too... So I consciously tried not to think of it as a romance, and just let the story happen, because it really is a good story. If definitely difficult at times. But it was interesting to discover what happened in their past bit by bit through these occasionally unreliable narrators.
I'll likely start the next one soon. The blurb sounded intriguing, setting-wise, and I want to spend more time with the MCs, it seems... :-)

For sure it could win a «diversity award», and I liked the general mood, kind of uplifting, even though it is set in a dire dystopian situation. But it didn't grab me like other similar books did already at the first read.
