What was it that didn't sit well? I love the Mahu mystery series. Don't get them confused with m/m or romance. At their core they are regular mystery books.

Awesome! I loved it too."
If you keep talking about it, I will feel like giving it a try even if I don't want!

I think there are mixed reviews about Glitterland because of the accent. I loved it because the whole Essex thing was just so real for me. I live near Essex and so I found the accents and class differences between the two main characters really amusing. I felt the author's portrayal of mental illness was sensitive but realistic and I also enjoyed his writing. I think the author is a he. I am going to read his next book which I think is f/f with vampires. Alas I dont think there will be Essex speak in that one.

I have the latest Mahu episode Natural Predators I can remember it took me some time to warm to the characters. I love Hawaii and so by the 3rd book I was well and truly hooked but it took me weeks to get through the first book. I am slowly making my way through the Deadly Slumber Deadly series by Victor J Banis. I think I like this more than the Mahu series because I have quite warmed to Stanley one of the main characters.

Yes, I saw all the talk about the accent. I'm about as far from Essex as you can get - Connecticut, USA, but I didn't mind it at all. I've read Zora Neal Hurston and she does a heavy negroid accent with skill and beauty. I agree the mental illness was beautifully done, and think the writing is superb. I couldn't tell if the writer was male or female, but does it really matter?

No the gender of the writer doesn't matter, just that during the buddy read some of us thought the author was female but he is male. He is also going to publish an additional short story on his website so I am keeping a look out for that. I really want to know what happens when Darien see the tattoo on Ash's arm. I hope we get to find out.

Read the sample on Riptide's page. There are other samples out there on blog tours as well.

I'd like to read that. Hope you post it when it's up.

It wasn't any 1 thing. Kimo is at a transitional time in his life which is always a bit awkward both in RL and in fiction. There wasn't a secondary main character to balance that out for me. He had a lot of characters in the story, and he handled them well. It just didn't balance for me. He used a 'trope' that may not be for me. The amateur sleuths were recruited by the detective. The author had a police detective, isolated from the force, use civilian friends and family to help question suspects and otherwise investigate a murder. It just didn't settle in my head. I kept jumping out of the story.
I own Mahu Fire and Mahu Blood. I liked the writing enough, and Hawaii, that I will keep trying. It might just have been this one. 8)

I loved Mahu Fire, and Kimo gets a very interesting boyfriend. :)

Cool! Something to look forward too. Thanks 8)

I can see where you are coming from with Mahu Surfer, though. Kimo is in a pretty bad place at the beginning of the book and he has a lot to work through. But still, I did love it since I like to see characters struggle through personal change in a book.

It is the second. I liked it, and will continue to read the series, they are well written, and I love all the secondary characters, the family and friends. And the scenery and the surfing are like secondary characters too. I just have to tackle the enormous heap of new books on my Kindle before I can start the next Mahu book, I get too many recommendations on this thread :)

That's why I find it difficult to read. It appears to be very accurate and the whole topic of mental illness is a hot button for me.

The Riptide sample was what prompted me to say I won't touch it with a ten foot pole - because of the bloody accent ;-).
But to read other bits can probably help. Not that I have a shortage of books to read.

Given that it has two things I don't like, I'm not sure why I did buy it! But I'm persevering with reading it and it is very good.

Sometimes reading a book is like a masochistic experience, it is both painful and good :). When it is painful and bad, though, I stop reading ..

Yes it's the second book. that might be part of Reggie's problem. he needs the first book, Mahu, where Kimo faces the choice of outing himself or covering up a murder.
The order goes as follows:
Mahu
Mahu Surfer
Mahu Fire
Mahu Vice
Mahu Blood
Zero Break
Natural Predators
I started listening to the The Fry Chronicles by Stephen Fry today while doing some gardening and I like it a lot so far (the audio book — and well, the gardening, too). ;-) I also learned a new-to-me British word form it. Tuck is an old-fashioned English school slang word for sweets, candy. :-)

Cool! It's next on my list. I'm now reading Josephine Myles' Junk.
Btw, new Terry Pratchett coming out in November! It's with Moist.

I've skipped around the series a bit, but I like it. It's well done. My favorite remains the first book.

I adore Stephen Fry! :-) Is he narrating as well? I thought The Fry Chronicles will be more like Moab is my Washpot, which i really liked, but it's quite different.

I have the latest book in the Mahu series

I just think it would be so amazing to actually read it in Hawaii. If i dont get to travel then I will just read it in a coffee shop by the Thames instead.

Cute?! :-) cute's good actually, and it is always a pleasure when the writer writes well, not to be taken for granted, that's for sure.

Me, too, and I don't generally read books about it. Haven't read The Silver Linings Playbook for that reason, because most things like that are BS. I think I wasn't completely aware of what Glitterland is about, so I got sucked in by the beautiful writing, although the descriptions of depression are so vivid that I certainly felt it! The tone of the book is not generally depressing, tho. I do find the Brandstetter books quite depressing to read. Hansen must have been depressed, as is implied in the snippet about him in the AE books.

It sounds like a promising book. And I've already bought it and look forward to reading it.
That said, I bought it *despite* the over-the-freaking-top linguistic gyrations. Because the fact is, a little bit of dialect or accent goes a very long way. And this is true whether the accent is Essex Boy or South Central L.A.
Heavy handed is heavy handed, and an English accent (however adorable we Yanks find youse guys) is just as tiresome and blush-worthy when overdone as it would be to read an author trying to capture the "true" Chollo patois.

Nice review.

Yes, he has a great storytelling voice, doesn't he, it's the type of voice i would have loved as a kid, deep and with humor in it somehow.
I have the Hitchhiker's Guide narrated by him and it's really good. Also, Paddington... :-)

Fry has a gorgeous voice. Warm and wry and humorous.

Certainly no one could accuse you of being 'heavy handed'. I love the subtle, light and elegant quality of your writing.
I was slightly leery of the accent in Glitterland, but I soon got the hang of it and there isn't a whole lot of it. And the character, Darian, is quite lovable.

I just finished reading Mahu yesterday myself. I really liked it, especially how Kimo's family supported him and helped him in the end. I intend to continue the series, but like many others here I have a ton of other books to read first.
I have read some great books lately, thanks to all of your recommendations. Thanks!

The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics is quite exciting and lovely. Even touches on the Dust Bowl.

I'm reading Josh's Man, Oh Man nowadays.
Before that:
Stephen Fry - The Fry Chronicles
Tina Fey - Bossypants
Alison Bechdel - Fun Home
Jonathan Safran Foer - Eating Animals
Jeanette Winterson - Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal
