And another gift, this time from Not Your Usual Suspects. This year I've been lucky enough yo have won some raffles and I'm really grateful:

I suppose the five botanical books I bought during Univ. of Chicago Press's sale are my Christmas gift to myself. I bought them with gifting in mind, then liked them too much. So maybe re-gifting later...

A Shakespearean Botanical
Vegetables (Vegetables: A Biography)
Culinary Herbs and Spices of the World
Remarkable Plants That Shape Our World
The Book of Leaves: A Leaf-by-Leaf Guide to Six Hundred of the World's Great Trees

And I bought a copy of Walden (illustrated Thoreau bicentennial edition) when I went for coffee/shopping with my daughters at our local with their gift cards.

Susinok | 5205 comments I bought a few books on the Riptide sale and I just finished Change of Address by Jordan S. Brock. It was very good! Bagel shop owner and PTSD Veteran on an island off the coast of New Hampshire. It's the beginning of a 4 book series involving more than just mm. One will be trans, and I think one of them will be a lesbian romance.

More to look forward to!

Susinok | 5205 comments I read Witches of London - Lars by Aleksandr Voinov. It was different than is usual stuff. Slow burn contemporary romance with magical elements. One of MCs is a pagan and that figures heavily into the story. Good book!

There's a local book club reading Death Trick for their February read. I was so excited when a patron came in asking for the book and then terribly bummed when I had to tell him we didn't have a copy he could borrow. He's off to B&N now to see if he can order it there. At least I was able to tell him it's a fantastic book!

It is, right? A lovely cover, I mean. It's one of my favourites of Johanna's work. Totally happy it found a home on the front of this book. :-)

And speaking of covers, I am so embarrassed that Johanna did not get the cover credit on So This is Christmas. ARGH.

Reading Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You for my library book group discussion next week.

It's good. Definitely not something I'd read on my own, but still enjoyable.

Alison | 4756 comments I read CB Lewis' Private Truths and I really enjoyed it. It's really nice contemporary full of realism and emotion featuring a charming celebrity viscount and an earnest army vet. I found it to be heartwarming and amusing while dealing with a some more serious issues like privacy, PTSD, class, and paparazzi. I absolutely love this author's very cool time travel mystery romance series and it's cool to see her write a different genre so nicely.

Oh wow. I just finished reading Robert Bentley's Here There Be Dragons — one of the most gripping and interesting books I've read lately! It took me about 40 pages to really get into the story... and after that I was almost unable to put the book down. I started this book with no expectations — I didn't even know what it was really about. I only knew that it was mentioned in Fatal Shadows and that at least Antonella, Karen and Jordan had enjoyed reading it.

I have to say: this author's voice strangely sneaked into my heart. That's how it felt! The bigger the story grew, expanded — also in emotional level — the more I fell in love with his voice and his characters and the whole book. It was not a romance precisely, not at least the way we usually think about it, but there was a love story alright. With an ending I'm satisfied with.

So, if you happen to find this one — I think you should buy it. It's a fascinating combination of a cold war thriller and lyrical, beautiful, sensual writing. Five stars from me! (And no, there weren't dragons in it! LOL.)

Also — did any of you manage to find anything else from Robert Bentley? I remember that there weren't another book exactly, but maybe an literary journal of sorts. Karen, did you ever find it (buy it)? I found your old post about it:

Karen wrote, Aug 04, 2016:

"I ordered from Bolerium Books (via Amazon) and just found that Bentley was included in this literary journal:
Gay literature; a literary journal. winter 1975, number one
Daniel Curzon, Fresno. 1975, 56p., some photos, wraps.
With contributions from Daniel Curzon, Allen Young, Robert Bentley, Robert Hopkins and others.
Cat.No: 47179
Price: $25.00

So perhaps there was something else published, but no way to know unless I order this. It could be an excerpt, an essay, an interview, a poem, etc."

I'm glad that you too loved it!

It was so good and not even a bit ''old'', except the obvious cold war aspects.

I'm curious to know if you or someone else finds out something about the author. I had missed Karen's note. When I read the book I tried to find out something via the internet and felt a bit stalkerish ;-).

I haven't done much research into Robert Bentley, myself, but what little I did, well, he seems like a ghost with this one book left behind to remind us he was here... You know?

My copy didn't come with a dust jacket, but I recall someone said it mentioned another book by him, I think. I don't remember the details though.
