This is definitely on my to-be-read list.

Originally I was doubtful, but it's had such incredible reviews and inspires such devotion from readers. :-)

Yes! Well, I mean no, but yes. Dal is one of those writers who can literally turn you hot and cold...I have a visceral reaction to her stories. I truly feel what the characters feel...it's exhausting! :-D

I think it's a wonderful gift to be able to do that. :-D

I will say that she's not the writer to pick up when you're looking for a little comfort, a little coziness, a quick pleasant read. :-D

I've updated the Midnight Riot/Rivers of London thread in our BOM discussion with new release dates for The Hanging Tree. Check it out.

Side note: I'm irritated at the lag time (sometimes a few years!) between a UK release and the follow up US release! This one doesn't seem to be that bad, but still, they keep pushing the US release back!

Antonella | 11565 comments I've been reading a lot, also outside, enjoying the last sunny days.

Two years after I bought it I finally read Footnotes in Gaza by Joe Sacco , an astounding mix of investigative journalism and graphic novel. I suppose I'm biased, but the work is not black and white, lots of gray in it as well, just like reality is.

Then I've re-read the beginnings of two series: the one starting with Line and Orbit (Root Code, #1) by Sunny Moraine , and the one starting with Catch a Ghost (Hell or High Water, #1) by S.E. Jakes .

I wanted to be able to enjoy the following books . The first series was great, the second one disappointed me. But I know lots of people liked it, so good for the author...

I hope you like it. I discovered Lou's paranormal/fantasy/mystery series one day when i was feeling tired and cranky, and found them to have a soothing, relaxing quality, while at the same time being intriguing and engaging. I like her romance books too.

Now here's a book I'm pleasantly surprised with: How to Howl at the Moon by Eli Easton. I'm in the middle of listening to this one and I'm liking it A LOT. More than I thought I would! I LOVE when that happens! It's very sweet and fun and ADORABLE and the audio book also has a wonderful narrator, Matthew Shaw. To say it shortly — this book is exactly what I needed right now.

Several of you have recommended How to Howl at the Moon here, so thank you at least to KC, Sabine, Haldis... (sorry if I forgot someone!) I haven't even finished the book yet and I already bought the next one in the series to make sure I already have it at hand when I'm done with the first one. :-)

Our tastes are 85% similar for the books we both read and rated. I noticed that you gave in general one star less than me to similar stuff (Special Forces, Cut & Run series).

Please consider that you'll be left with a cliffhanger if you read only the first book. In fact you'll be left with a cliffhanger after every book of the series ;-).

This said, you have to decide. Sorry if I didn't help a lot...

I remember finding it entertaining and easy. It's not really my usual sort of thing, but it's so over-the-top that I found it pretty fun. I agree with what Jordan said, that it's not the greatest thing ever, but it's totally likeable. I did Antonella's trick and it looks like we have some tastes vaguely in common (86%!), for whatever that's worth. Maybe it's like a summer blockbuster action movie? Fun and entertaining, but maybe not something to take too seriously, if that makes sense. I read the second book too, and enjoyed it for the same reasons, but stopped there because it wasn't really my sort of thing. For me, it was easy, escapist fun that didn't require too much thought. But yeah, heaps of people love it dearly. There's always the "read the sample and see" method. Good luck. :)

Smashwords always allows you to read a bigger chunk of the books in comparison to amazon or the original publishing house, in this case till page 34:

It makes a lot of sense, it's exactly the idea that I got from all the different reviews. I think this book is a case of "you could just as easily love it or think it's mediocre".
Thank you for confirming it, Alison.

Was this a Kindle Unlimited book at first? So many authors seem to be doing this now. And then even if they put it out for all audiences after three months, by then it's dropped off my radar screen. Sigh.

Loretta (loris65) | 1545 comments In the last week, I have read three books that the author thanked Josh for her encouragement and help. I think one of the reasons I enjoy Josh's work so much is not only are her books fabulous, but she is truly generous and kind person. I can't count all the wonderful authors I have found based on Josh's recommendation or from their interaction with her.

I read Bitter Legacy. It was an interesting and good read, which we will all discuss in the book of the month.

I also read I Don't: A Christmas Wish. I thought I had read all of Kari's books, but I missed this one (2012). It was very enjoyable, humorous, and my first Christmas read this year.

The final book was The Mystery of Nevermore. This is another new author and also a Christmas story. I enjoyed it very much.

I think it's pretty darned good. The MCs are Harry's son and Draco's son. And this is a playwright script, not a novel version. I enjoyed it, but I'm waiting until the novel is published before I buy.

Finally making my way slowly through The Iron Jackal by Chris Wooding. It took me awhile to be in the right mood for this one. Also, I was irritated by a few things Captain Frey did in the beginning that I didn't agree with that stuck in my mind, even though they really shouldn't have.

Happily though, I've got Ann Cleaves The Crow Trap next, which is Vera book one. I saw a patron the other day checking out Harbor Street and when I asked if she'd read the rest of the series she wanted to know why I was asking. Obviously, I was making conversation and wanting to know her thoughts, but she said Harbor Street would be the first shed read. Since she didn't seem interested in conversation, I didn't ask why she wasn't starting with book one. *shrugs* I guess that's not important to her, or she wanted whatever was available.

I've read and listened to a melange of the amazing in the best sense, and the amazing in the sense that the characters are given words and actions that no real person would speak or perform (or at least I hope that's the case).

The audiobooks of For Real and The Mermaid Murders are wonderful. Great narration of great stories. Bitter Legacy was challenging, but is a new favorite, albeit painful, story.

The strangest book I've recently read was The Mystery of Nevermore which I first took as an homage to Fatal Shadows, but finished feeling as though it were more like AE fanfic (AE fanfic that makes me glad that the notion of JL-invited fanfic was nixed by a lot of us).(view spoiler)

Alison | 4756 comments I just read Anna Butler's amazing Gyrfalcon. It's a really exciting sci-fi space adventure with a romance subplot and I totally loved it. It's very gripping with engaging characters and interesting drama, both familial and romantic, and of course, being badass in space. One reviewer on GR compared it with the Vorkosigan books, and I agree--it's military sci-fi that's about people and relationships rather than the military (though I doubt there will ever be a character that's cooler than Miles Vorkosigan. :) ). Highly recommended if you think that sort of thing sounds like fun. I thought it was awesome! I'm excited to start the second book tonight. Unfortunately, I must go to work first. Drat it all.

You're welcome. I did start the second book last night and it's wonderful so far. It started off with a bang and I'm really struggling to not read it this morning! There is a big story to tell and I gather it is to be a longer series, so nothing is rushed and there's such depth, which I absolutely love.

I also recommend her other book, The Gilded Scarab, which I really enjoyed earlier this year. It's a steampunkish adventure romance about an ex-soldier who buys a coffeehouse in AU Victorian London, falls in love, and then lots of trouble follows.

She has planned it as a five book series. Anna always tries to remind people that this is mostly a sprawling space opera with the m/m relationship in the background. She doesn't want hardcore romance readers to be disappointed.

I own the first two books myself, and SOMEDAY I'm going to find the time to read them! Hmm, maybe we ought to make Gyrfalcon a Book of the Month.

Oh, I hadn't realize this. (Granted, I haven't read the book yet.) Anyways, that probably also explains the same cover model on the cover than AE series has. I quite like the cover:
