Alison | 4756 comments I read Alex Beecroft's new book, Lioness of Cygnus Five, and it's really cool. It's an exciting sci-fi space opera adventure (with a romantic subplot) where people of colour and queer folk save the world through being smart and taking charge and beating the bad guys. If that sounds like fun, I definitely recommend it. :)

Phoebe | 18 comments Makes sense that it's a children's book, but still the writing for LoTR is definitely different. The characters themselves are written with a different tone. It's the main reason I'm not enjoying it very much.

Aurora is female and straight and Bryant is male and bi, but there's a bit more to it than that. Technically, it's m/f. The sex of the characters features as part of the plot.

KC | 4897 comments I finished reading Amy Rae Durreson's backlist this weekend... I love all her stories. Several of her short stories are in anthologies, and of those, my very favorites are the ones in Snow on the Roof and Steamed Up.

And started R.Cooper's A Boy and His Dragon. Sweet.

I started reading John Wiltshire's Ollie Always last night and I'm totally hooked. I've read only about 15%, but I'm liking it very, very much already.

Alison, I think it was you who recommended this one (partly because it's set in New Zealand). Thank you!

That's the strange thing: usually the 'go to' helps but not this time. To me it looks as if there's no toc at all. I'll load it into the Kindle app on my tablet and see what I see there. At least now I know it's a problem of my hardware and not the book. ;)

Yay! Congratulations. I've still got a few of those anthology shorts to read. Enjoy the R. Cooper awkward sweetness. :)

Speaking of R. Cooper...I discovered the other day that she has a heap of stuff posted on AO3. There are over a hundred stories! Most of them are fanfic and there are few original things. I read a short one last night--a dragon story called "All the Futures That Could Be" and it was very cute (it's about Bertie's cousin, for anyone who's read A Boy and His Dragon). I know there are some Cooper fans here, so I thought it worth mentioning. She also has several lovely free shorts on her website.

I haven't had a chance to read anything that wasn't research for a book in so long!

But I have been glancing over some of what is being marketed as M/M mystery and...I'm really having a hard time with it.

Why do people who clearly do not like or even understand the mystery genre try to write mysteries?

Okay, rhetorical question because we all know why. They think it's a way of finding new readers. But mystery readers require...actual mystery and not the kind of stupid romantic suspense (at best) feeble effort that so often passes for "mystery" in these idiotic books.

I won't name names, but it makes me appreciate writers like Nicole Kimberling, who writes a mainstream quality mystery series, all the more.

I know it's early, but I've been charged with creating a winter themed book list for December, and I'm having a hard time deciding which book fits better: Winter Kill or Snowball in Hell?

Thoughts?

OK, next question: I don't read many blogs about MM Romance. Do any of you have a favorite?

I'm working on something called a LibGuide, which is basically a library guide on a particular subject. I'm hoping to put one together on MM, because, why not? I'll be listing tons of books with various subgenres, I think, as well as blogs/blog posts. I'm not sure what else will go into it, but we'll see.

Thanks guys!

Antonella | 11565 comments Jordan wrote: "OK, next question: I don't read many blogs about MM Romance. Do any of you have a favorite?"

I don't read them anymore, I suppose also because of the many recs from friends and because the mountain of books I own to read is too big.

I used to love the reviews by http://bookutopia.blogspot.ch/ but she stopped it in 2012, now she just writes GR reviews now and then as a normal reader.

Lately I've just came across a good site I thought I should follow it, but I've lost it again. A sign of Fate ;-).

Anyway good luck with your project, you keep having excellent ideas!

Do you mean ''Speak Its Name''? I wanted to give the link to Jordan and I found out that it is as dead as a dead parrot ;-)...

I'm going to ask Erastes if the reviews are still available somewhere.

Concerning Fallocaust: I checked what it is. I can't imagine that many people here would be into this...

That said, some people here love stuff other people wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole: to each her/his own ;-)

I follow some people on GR who work with the Prism Book Alliance site and while I don't follow the site myself, I have looked at it a few times and it seems like they're competent and do a reasonable job and care about inclusion and diversity and good discussion. But, like I said, I don't *really* know, but maybe they're worth a look. ?

And I'm a huge fan of Queer Romance Month and I don't know if that's the sort of thing you're after, but it's a neat resource in any case. It's about books, but maybe it's too general and too about lots of other things as well.

I just remembered...Have you guys checked out the Macaronis blog? It's a queer historical fiction blog run by most of the same authors. It's had a resurgence recently after a few quiet years. It may be worth a look, Jordan.
