Chubby hero with NO mention of dieting at all. Though our hero is very self-conscious about his looks.

Ame | 1744 comments I am rereading Plumber's mate series by JL Merrow, starting with Pressure Head. I was needing something British after reading about the British TV series. And it's been so long since I've read it I don't remember the plot clearly so all the better. Gary is fabulous mostly because I have a friend who's just like him so reading about him I always picture my friend and laugh out loud most of the time.

That's great that you can picture a friend as the MC!

I'm enjoying Whispers Under Ground, which is great for the same British reasons you listed. :-) I'm really enjoying this series!

So I followed Jordan's recommendation (from her list of books mentioned in the AE series) and bought a copy of Here There Be Dragons by Robert Bentley. Also noted that Calathea added a GR blurb, one that she found on Lambda Literary from an article by Drewey Wayne Gunn. I'm about midway through this 1972 book, impressed, and hoped to read more about Bentley and maybe find his (dustcover promised) second novel. I've found nothing via Google search or on GR, or elsewhere, except for Gunn's reference in these two posts, and the mention in (which?) AE book. Jordan. Josh, librarians? Any info appreciated. : )

Oh you're lucky! You got a dust jacket?!?! lol. My copy's a bit beat up without the cover.

So glad you're enjoying it!

I didn't know Bentley had another book either! So, You know more than me at this point.

Josh has the AE recommended book, music, and movie list. Soon as she goes through it I think she's going to post it on her website so everyone can see it.

But the list does say that Bentley's Here There Be Dragons was mentioned in chapter 3 of Fatal Shadows.

And thanks for posting a link to the second article. I'd not seen that one. Makes me really glad I just got a new bookcase specifically for gay mysteries and that it's mostly empty! hehehe. Of course, I've got a stack of Hansen and a stack of Justice novels to shelve on it once they're read, but still plenty of space for all these new to me book! :-D

One of the interesting things about the H&M series was the initial hostility to Kit's looks. The fact that he wasn't "beautiful" like Adrien bothered a few people right out of the gate.

I do describe him as forty and out of shape -- and of course Kit is self-deprecating so he exaggerates his flaws to comic effect -- but what was fascinating were the reviews and comments about him being balding and fat.

Huh?

There was never any mention of thinning hair and out of shape does not automatically mean fat.

I suspect there is a reveal there about readers and their own body issues.

WHAT?! Balding and fat? Never saw that.

Then again, I was one of the readers who always pictured Jake with brown hair, so clearly I'm not good with character descriptions. But balding and fat? No. lol.

Really? I always interpreted his character as being really hard on himself, thinking himself a lot less attractive then he really was because of identity crisis and low self esteem because of his writing career and after staying in an unhappy relationsip, investing in it and still he was jilted. When in honesty he was quite attractive. Or at J.X. thought so and I believe to be really smart ;)

So its surprising people felt he was unattractive.

Besides, don't unattractive people deserve love too?

And I loved J.X.'s beard :D

Exactly the way I see it!

Funny how people interpret the same text/story so differently.

I have to disagree with you about beards in the UK. They are really popular at the moment especially with men in their twenties and thirties. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2...

I do agree they need to be well cared for. But most men I know do so.

Here some men have always had beards, like my ex who had a very short one, but these last years it has become a hipster feature, often very long and bushy beards. I like a short well groomed beard, but am not so fond of the long ones. But much worse than beards are mustaches, those I can't get used to.

That's how I saw Kit too. Maybe a bit frumpy and unkempt until his makeover, but still basically attractive. Just overly harsh on himself.

Me too. Though it makes me sad that people were actually upset that Josh would write about someone that wasn't conventionally attractive, even if it wasn't actually the case. Everyone's attractive in their own way. Even if he were balding and overweight, Kit is awesome. And perception of attractive-ness is totally a unique, individual thing.

message 11783: by Alison (new)

Alison | 4756 comments I have read a two especially awesome books recently:

--Alex Beecroft's By Honor Betrayed. Her seafaring historicals are among my most favourite romances, and this novella is lovely and super exciting and very well done.

--Shut Your Face, Anthony Pace! by Claire Davis and Al Stewart. This is a wonderfully refreshing NA romance and it made me happy. The characters are absolutely delightful. Charming and gentle.

It seems that Bentley had this book published and then that was it, unless he changed pen names. It makes me kind of sad because there's a lot of promise there, but it seems this one book is the only remaining evidence of this individual's writing endeavors.

I ordered from Bolerium Books (via Amazon) and just found that Bentley was included in this literary journal:
Gay literature; a literary journal. winter 1975, number one
Daniel Curzon, Fresno. 1975, 56p., some photos, wraps.
With contributions from Daniel Curzon, Allen Young, Robert Bentley, Robert Hopkins and others.
Cat.No: 47179
Price: $25.00

So perhaps there was something else published, but no way to know unless I order this. It could be an excerpt, an essay, an interview, a poem, etc.

I thought of Kit always as as an attractive man, who has a very hard, unmerciful opinion of himself.
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think, that beauty grews unviewable, if you are together with a very good looking man or woman. One get used to it and then are other traits of the character are way more important!
