What Are you Reading?

Thank you, Jordan! I do that!

I have it! I got that and Shirewode a few weeks ago. I have not listened to it yet, but soon! I have heard good things about it. I imagine it is a wonderful series to listen to, given how it is written. Looking forward to it. Thanks, Jordan. :)

Good? I'm looking forward to this one. I read Elliot Cooper's cute steampunk short the other day and I enjoyed his writing. The blurb sounds great. Magic sci-fi! :)
So stupid me never knew the movie National Velvet was based on a book until I found said book in a used book store. I bought it, but haven't yet read it. That's what I'll be starting next. I know most books are better than their movies, but I don't know about this one. The movie is pretty darn awesome and includes a fantastic cast, including Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney, if I recall correctly. I plan to watch it after reading it to compare them, so we'll see.

I think there are three books total. National Velvet was the first one. Man I must have read them 40 years ago.
There was also a movie later on with Tatum O'Neil called International Velvet. A sequel of sorts.
Awesome! Good to know. Thanks guys! I don't know how on Earth I'm sooo in the dark about all this!

Good news, Josephine. It sounds like just the sort of thing I'd like. I will look forward to it even more now. :)

I finally read KJ Charles' A Gentleman's Position over the weekend and it's brilliant. One of the best Regency romances I've ever read.
Last night I read Becky Albertalli's Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and it was also kind of brilliant. It's an absolutely delightful queer YA romance that made me so happy. It's very well done.

Thank you! I picked up a copy.

Yes! Brilliant and exciting and wonderful. I'm completely in love with this series, loved every word, the characters, everything! :-)

Read The Cop and the Nosey Neighbor this weekend and loved it! Just the thing after a hectic, stressful week. Made me smile so much. I had to let it go in the middle to go to a bday party, and the thought of coming back to a good, fun book made it easier to get through the socializing, lol. So thank you for the rec! :-)

I wanted to comment ''Oh, the hardship!'' when I saw your comment about having to go to the birthday party, but then I remembered that you're not a social butterfly ;-).

I am listening to Sunset Park audio right now. I tried to listen to Sutphin Blvd but the narrator had a flat accent with no New York flavor at all. Hard to tell the voices apart, too. Very disappointed in that narration. Sunset Park is much better (different narrator).

Not sexually explicit, in fact the romance takes a back seat, barely there, but the paranormal aspects blended with gypsy traditions, nazi flashbacks, medical aspects and set in New Orleans as well as the upper East Coast made this book a winner for me. This is an author I want to read more from.

I just listened to the first 2 in Annabeth Albert's Status Update (Gaymers) series and I was disappointed at the lack of southern accent for one of the MCs from North Carolina. But I really enjoyed the story. Any video game fans might like it :)

Lol, true :-) Also, this was the kind of party where nobody knows anybody else except for the hosts, while i was already acquainted with the book and the book did all the talking, so. ;-)

Good that it's a different narrator. I'll stick to the ebooks with this series. Especially with Sunset Park, i really enjoyed reading and rereading certain scenes. Really loved this one.

I recently read (ebook, not audio) Status Update, and two other blogger/gaymer books: Strong Signal and Draw the Line (loved those two).
This is picky/petty, but I really wish that Albert's #gaymers books had covers as graphically strong as her Portland Heat books. The #gaymers covers are two busy and too "faded color photograph purple" for my taste. ; )

Is the gaming aspect actually part of the book or just backdrop for the romance? I mean, the summary had me at 'geoarcheologist' and 'game designer' isn't too shabby either, but... I've been disappointed by this kind of blurb too often.

I wante..."
Oh, that's so not my type of party. But the prospect to continue a good book hopefully made time fly. Only problem: what reason to give why you have to leave early... ;)

I tend to agree Karen. It seems like Carina/Harlequin should have a more impactful arsenal of cover artists... I think if it as an opportunity lost, especially with the 'gamers' theme! The covers do have a faded retro look.

Well, there is a bit of talk about the industry and cons and crowdfunding... And the geoarcheologist factor works in well with the MC being able to provide constructive criticism on the possibilities of soil and ricks behaviors in space :D ...but otherwise, it is pretty much the background for the romance

The geoarcheologist is a fan of the game the game designer designs, so they do talk a fair bit about the game itself, but I agree, it's a more a background thing.

I agree that maybe those covers aren't exactly right for the books, but I do quite like them. I think they are quite attractive, but yeah, they totally could have gone in another direction with this theme.

Can't wait to hear what you think of First and First. In my opinion the best of the three books.

Will let you know :-) I'm really looking forward to it. Especially since i'm not sure how i feel about the MCs given what happened in Sunset Park, but it will be interesting to get to know them better.

Thank you! I think I'll leave it on the keep in mind list then, not on the must read shelf. :)
Just checked out Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog... and Your Life from the library. Hopefully it'll help.
I think Team Dog: How to Train Your Dog--the Navy SEAL Way is also useful. I added that to my wish list. This one is good for those who haven't bought a dog yet, as he does go through the process of how to pick the right dog for you.

Picking the dog is the #1 thing. When I adopted Beau, I had poured over the website and read everybody's biographies. But when I tried to walk the dogs I was interested it, it was no go. I finally asked the agency workers to bring out a calm dog. Beau was the result. Though he has quirks from is past, he is definitely calm - unless he's at the vet.

I'm not sure a thunder shirt would address the problem of her fears. If she's not wearing it, she'll still be afraid. I'll definitely keep it in mind though, if nothing else works.
In the meantime, we're going to work on her pulling. Hopefully, if I can get her to stop pulling when she's scared, she'll calm down a bit too. We'll see. I really just need to pick something and stick with it!

Good to know and good news. Thanks, Haldis. I've been wondering about that one.

Anyway, if you didn't get it from Dreamspinner you can get it for 0,99 at Amazon. But don't blame me if you don't like it. I love it though. Probably one of my favorite reads of this year.

I'm reading it right now and was wary because of the topics mentioned in GR reviews, but I'm loving it so far. BTW, I don't see Idrys the way he's described in many of those, or to the extent that I do it's realistic and understandable. This story is different from a lot of m/m, more real in the sense of dealing with the way 20-somethings (and others) actually act and rationalize and make decisions. I had to put it down for awhile this morning so I'd get something else done.
And yes, the cover is eye-catching. : )

Bought it. The blurb strongly reminds me of some fic I read last year or do.
The sale (I guess it was that cheap because of the sale?) priced the Kindle ebook at 41 cent and the paperback at ovef 15 Euro. Wow. This is a mind-boggling discrepancy.

I agree. It's much more realistic than most romance stories. Probably why I like it so much. People are not always nice in real life. They do stupid things, juvenile things.

Oh, good to know about The Prince and the Program! I read the sample and was wildly confused but then the reviews had been so very good... "
It is a wildly confusing book, Calathea, no doubt about that! :)
But I loved it anyway. I finished and kind of went "whoa...dude...what just happened?" and felt a bit bewildered for a few days. I think you just have to go along with it and be confused and accept the confusion. :) I still loved it, even though I was confused and I still don't really understand what exactly happened, if that makes sense? I love that the GR reviews seem to go two ways--people love it or they hate it. :) I thought it was really funny and really smart and super geeky and heartwarming and strange. I love his writing. A re-read is in order someday. Maybe it will make more sense the second time.
Have you read his other book, The Emperor's New Clothes (Royce Ree #1): An Interstellar Heist? Oh wait, I see that you have. Huge chunks of that book didn't make sense until the end, and this one is structured in kind of a similar way and is also awesome in kind of a similar way. Since you liked Royce Ree, chances are good you might like this one too. It's pretty cerebral and it's a good one for when you're in the mood for something different and strange and thinky and funny that requires your full attention. It made my head spin, but in a good way. :)
