Darlene | 89 comments I have put together an excel spreadsheet to keep track of the list of books I've read for my 2016 challenge. It's like keeping my checkbook balance. Is my Goodreads list the same as my excel sheet.

I've also over the years kept trade of all the books I own, their prices and whether they are hardcover, paperback or Kindle. I started that incase of a house fire and I would know how much I own in books. I started that back in 2011.

I also keep track of yearly spending of my books/Kindles. Now that I'm into series and I can't afford to buy the whole set at once, I keep an excel sheet on all the books in the series and check off the ones I have been able to buy until I make the complete set, then I read them.

One other list I keep is the books I buy with many of the short stories in them that are on Kindle. I write all the titles down in the book to make sure I don't duplicate by buying a Kindle story I already have in book form.

I know that probably sounds pretty anal, but I like to be organized even though Pisces are not suppose to be.

Anyway, good luck with your surgery, Jordan.

I love organizing my books, but even I don't go that far! That's amazing.

I do keep shelves on GR for the books I read each year in case I reread things and the official challenge gets botched up as some of mine have been.

And no, I don't balance my checkbook. Numbers boggle my mind and I'd rather be reading a book! Lol.

I admire that kind of organization.

Because I do everything on line, I've become horrible about balancing my checkbook. Which is to say, I sort of do that online, which means I largely keep it in my head. (Alarm bells sound.) I don't write many physical checks, except around tax time (JFC the taxes this year!) and, alarmingly, I tend to lose track.

So I thought I would keep a running tally posted to my monitor. And of course then I realized that a tool for this already exists and it's called a CHECK BOOK REGISTER.

:-D

Thanks all. Surgery was a sucess. I've been coherent and talking most of the day except the hour or two immediately following it. There was a bit of an upset stomach for awhile, but my totally awesome coworker brought me saltine crackers to nibble on which helped. The amazing thing is that the doctors office sent me home with a whole quart of vanilla ice cream. It didn't sit well today, but maybe tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'm loading up on orange and strawberry jello and tapioca pudding. Because, yes, I LOVE tapioca pudding! Though I think this will fill my jello quota for a couple of years. Lol

Maybe tomorrow I'll start the AE project in earnest. I'm still enjoying Alek's Nightingale. The story is good and I really like the narrators voice. It was good to listen with my eyes closed while I was in bed this afternoon. :-)

And on that note, I'm going to head to bed.

I have a question for anyone interested in this spreadsheet I'm creating. I'm listing the title and author, and which book the title gets mentioned in. Should I also list which chapter?

I started two more columns for movie titles and the actors associated with them because it seemed appropriate. There are already two movies mentioned by chapter five of Fatal Shadows. Might as well kill two birds with one stone, right?

I was excited to see Robert Bentley's Here There Be Dragons was the second book mentioned after the Brandstetter Series! I've got a copy, I just haven't gotten a chance to read it yet.

The pain actually isn't bad. I took a prescription pain killer yesterday when I got home, then switched to Advil at dinner time and I've been fine. :-) my coworker had been assuring me I wouldn't be talking for at least a day and telling me to go straight to the major pain meds. But I'm fine. Just mostly uncomfortable in my mouth. I even stopped using the ice pack they gave me yesterday afternoon.

Of course, I'm using my time to languish in bed while skimming AE print books for titles for the spreadsheet while eating pudding at 9am. What a great Saturday!

I would list the chapters. I would love to read the whole text in which the author/book or movie is mentioned. I hope we can see the spreadsheet later?

Awesome. I did decide to leave the chapters in. Glad you agree it's a good thing. And yes, I'm planning to share this. Not entirely sure how yet. It probably would have been better to use Excel, but it's easier to use the iPad instead of my laptop.

Some of these require a bit of detective work. There are a few titles without authors. Hopefully Josh can clarify those before this gets shared with the masses.

Also, I was thinking these lists (by book perhaps) would make for great challenge reads someday. You know, read all the books/first books in a series mentioned in Fatal Shadows for example. I just finished chapter seven and there are already several series mentioned, so we couldn't read ALL the books mentioned. Or, we could just each do a list of all the books mentioned that we haven't read. So those who've read Brandstetter can skip it and those who haven't can read it. Anyway, I'm thinking outloud again. I'll stop now. Jello and chapter 8 await me. :-)

Yay! This is actually a fun challenge. But tricky. I decided by the second Shakespeare title that I shouldn't leave him out and in going back to find the first title mentioned, I found a copy of China House that hadn't made it onto the list! This is the problem with skimming! And Macbeth technically got mentioned before Brandstetter.

This definitely needs to go up on the website for sure!

Another question for readers: is there anything beyond title and author I should include about the books? Like genre or if it's specifically LGBTQ? They're not all gay mysteries, though a lot of them are of course. I'll try to mirror the book and movie lists with similar information if possible.

Google sheet (like Excel just online) is a cool way to use the functions of a spreadsheet and share it easily with friends. :-)

I would write down the chapters as well but now I see you already did. So I'm late answering that question. ;-)

If you're listing book and movie references, what about music?

Sending best wishes for speedy healing!

message 11194: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
You know, I thought about music references, but for some reason they seemed slightly less important. However, if enough people think it's important, I can go back through and grab them. I know there were at least two or three in Fatal Shadows.

That said, all the movie and book references are down for Fatal Shadows. Hopefully I've got all the series info and pub dates correct and whatnot. I'll let Josh verify authorless titles and anything else that needs fixing once I'm finished with all five books.

New question: should I include authors from lines like "well, he's no Robert Frost." Or "Clark Kent had figured me out." I hadn't, but now I'm wondering, since I realized I didn't include Chuck Norris from a brief mention that Jake will likely be watching a Chuck Norris marathon on tv. How far should I take this?

message 11198: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (loris65) | 1545 comments I just read Marie Sexton's Trailer Trash. It moved me deeply. I don't generally care to read about high school students, and I hate to think about the 80s and the AIDS epidemic, but I enjoy her work very much. So I read it. I'm glad I did. I graduated in 1983 so maybe that is why it resonates with me. There is a violent scene in the book, so it may not be readable for some. It is amazing to think of the changes over the last 30 years, from the big deal over making long distance phone calls (from pay phones) to the attitudes towards those in the LGBT community. It makes all these stupid anti-LGBT laws seem archaic and asinine.
