Yes! It's wonderful. I'm a few books behind, but it's a great historical paranormal series. Definitely worth a look if you like that sort of thing.

Okay, thanks for listing the stories of Brandstetter And Others. The dog : and other stories has the following stories:

The Dog
Enking
The Bee
Getting Rid of Mr. Grainger
Legacy
Mourner

ETA: So it seems that these two collections don't have same stories after all!

Alison | 4756 comments I recently read The Two Gentlemen of Altona by Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock and it was wonderful. I totally loved it. It's a fun and exciting story with great characters. I bought the second book the other day, so I'm looking forward to that.

I still haven't read it though...

I don't have Brandstetter and Others, but will fix that asap. I do have The Dog and other stories though. I haven't read it yet, but I was just reading the list of other novels in the front and found Stranger to Himself, which doesn't seem to be listed here on GR, and a book of verse titled One Foot in the Boat, also not listed here on GR.

It's funny because earlier this afternoon I was looking at my pile of Hansen's books thinking that I really ought to read another one soon! Great minds think alike, yes? :-)

I think these two are the only ones i don't have, plus Dog (which should be on its way here soon). There's one more collection: Blood Snow and Classic Cars: Mystery Stories - 3/6 stories appear in the other collections.

Stranger to Himself was originally published as Known Homosexual (1968). Nine years after that the book re-surfaced briefly as Stranger to Himself. It's the same book that was published later on as Pretty Boy Dead.

I have both Ghosts and Other Poems and One Foot in the Boat (poems, too). Out of those two Ghosts and Other Poems is my personal favorite. I'd definitely recommend that one. Also, I don't think it's actually 'rare', but not very easily found either. So, if you find it — grab it.

lol. I ordered the second Brandstetter book in print because the ebook wasn't out yet at the time, and that book happened to be signed by him. I didn't even know it for months because just after ordering it, the ebook was available and I never read the print book. Months later I was flipping through it randomly and found the signature by accident! lol.

Anne | 6816 comments I am reading Strong Signal right now. So far I have seen only glowing reviews of it, and it is very well written. But, it annoys me that so far I have had to plow through an enormous amount of sex talk in order to find the story. And there is an interesting story in there, with good characters and an interesting premise, but my goodness... They are supposed to have this connection through an online friendship, or so we are told. What we are shown, on the other hand, is they having various variations of cyber-sex and dirty talk on e-mail, chat, skype etc. Not my idea of a deep connection at all.

One of the authors is Santino Hassel, (co-writing with Megan Ericsson who is one author I haven't tried) and I remember the same with his Sutphin Boulevard. That ended up being a very good book after I had waded through a few too many sex scenes at the beginning, then it got very intense and interesting.

I haven't lost hope yet, that this book too will improve, because so far it is starting to bore me. I don't think that was the intention.

I believe I'm a little too old for this...

Yes, I keep thinking how exhausting it must be to have sex on the brain all the time, but I probably was more into it forty years ago... :)

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments Anne wrote: "I am reading Strong Signal right now. So far I have seen only glowing reviews of it, and it is very well written. But, it annoys me that so far I have had to plow through an enormou..."

I think that some authors feel that an erotic or romantic story has to be filled with sex scenes and then some publishers do request a certain number of sex scenes. I suppose there are also some readers who enjoy long sex scenes. I prefer a good story myself with sex where it enhances the story. I have read some really good books this year that have hardly any sex at all and I didn't miss it at all.

message 10638: by Trio (new)

Trio | 670 comments It definitely depends on how it enhances the story and how well the author does it. On average, I'd say two or three well placed ones with a fantastic story line is the perfect recipe for me.

I guess if a story is called erotica, sex will be a major part of it. That's why I usually avoid them. In other stories I can enjoy a well written sex scene or two (or even more) that is integral to the story and shows the depth of intimacy between the MCs. (Josh's stories come to mind for some reason). I usually don't miss it when there is a good story with no sex at all or fade to black. And sometimes I really get the suspicion the author writes yet another sex scene in order to avoid having to really work on the hard issues. (But that is probably me being unkind)

I enjoyed it a lot. It does get down to the relationship between the two once they meet face to face. I enjoyed it immensely, but then I still do have sex on the brain 24/7. Age has only lessened the opportunity, not the drive. Sadly...

message 10644: by Marge (new)

Marge (margec01) | 599 comments I recently rated two books three stars almost solely because there were simply too many sex scenes. They were both series books, and I was so tired of skimming over all the sex that I removed all the remaining books of both series from my to-read list. It's a shame, since there were good characters and good stories for about half the pages.

Conversely, I just gave five stars to Out! which had one sex scene at the end of the book (plus a few make out scenes and one interrupted scene). Apart from being more humorous and interesting overall, it was nice to want to read ALL the words in the book!

Susinok | 5205 comments Marge wrote: "Apart from being more humorous and interesting overall, it was nice to want to read ALL the words in the book! ..."

This made me laugh. I know how that feels. I skim a lot when I'm getting bored or waiting for the next bit of dialogue. I skim a lot when there isn't a lot of dialogue.

Though I loved Hassell and Erikson's book start to finish. I was fine with the sexytime content, but I was in the mood for some after reading lots of mostly sweet mysteries with Jonty and Orlando.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I am reading The Jade Butterfly: A Dan Sharp Mystery which is the third book in the Dan Sharp mystery series. These books do have some sex scenes but they are written very differently to the usual mm stories. It is hard to explain but they come across as more realistic and very different. They also have a way of moving the story along. The mysteries are good too. I have one more book to read after this one. It is a good series.

I really like this series.

I also enjoyed Strong Signal despite having to wade through too much sex (and skipping some), I believe it got better the second half when there was more focus on the story and the characters in stead of only the sexual chemistry.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. Early in the morning I was listening to In Plain Sight and afterward I realized that there wasn't a single sex scene in it. Sure, Josh mentions a few times the sex they had, but no explicit details. We don't know who tops, bottoms or how it's done. Nothing. And I liked that. It's enough to know it happened. This, of course, won't be the right way to go for all stories, but for a lot of them, I think it can work.
