@ Anne and KC: We have 700 kilometers to drive today (453 driven already) and I've been reading the beginning of The Ocean at the End of the Lane out loud to hubby. We are only on page 30, but I already like it a lot. Very gripping. I'll be back to report more later on. ;-)

KC | 4897 comments I'm still reading The Charioteer, it goes in small doses; there was a really gripping chapter at some point (not that it's not gripping otherwise, it is, but in different ways and at different paces), but mostly i'm savoring it. Only 50 pages left and i find myself not wanting it to end...

This weekend i read Astrid's Demolished, which was good and fast paced, and i started Dan Skinner's Memorizing You, which has beautiful insights, but i feel the need for something fluffy to complement it, not sure what will fit.

To quote our Jordan: "Oiy." ;-) Those last 50 pages are pretty intense! Enjoy, KC! The Charioteer is one of the best books I've ever read -- and I got to read it in the best possible company. :-) Feel free to comment on the December 2012 and January 2013 topic if you feel like it, KC. Sometimes my reading list is just appalling. Well, maybe more apropos, it's junk food, but sometimes junk food does the trick. I'm wondering if there's a drinking game for certain m/m phrases. I kind of remember a blog post along those lines. Anyway I added a new bookshelf called btw-sth-smile (view spoiler), in case I need an excuse to drink. ;-)

I'm currently 70% through Bad Boyfriend and I've ended up enjoying it quite a bit actually. ;-) I didn't realize these can be found in audio format, too. Karan | 265 comments I'm not sure there is a thread at GR that covers this problem, but perhaps someone here can help me out? I read the sample of a book on Amazon recently, liked it, and intended to go back and buy the book in the future. Life being what it is, unfortunately, apparently I remembered the title incorrectly. I just started The Inventor's Companion, which someone suggested for a BOM, like, ten million years ago and it was never chosen. Bummer, because I'm LOVING it so far. Very well written, and I'm enjoying the topic, the rich characters, everything.

When I left work, I was torn. I wanted to get home ASAP so I could read more of this book, but I also wanted to stay at my desk and stare at the fish as he made a bubble nest, as I've never witnessed that happy activity before. Just... wow. lol. And one hard decision to make.

And with that note, I'm off to do laundry where I can sit in the cool basement laundry room and read for half an hour while my laundry gets itself clean. Sometimes doing chores can be fun! lol.

These kind of questions always intrigue (and distract) me so I spent a bit of time trying to find a list of m/m books with musicians. When I couldn't find one I started a GR listopia page, one that needs a lot of input because I just scrolled through my e-library looking for titles that jumped out at me, but I know I'm missing several, even from my personal collection. I'm sure there are at least one or two with classical musicians... Anyway I don't care much about the "voting" aspect of listopia, but it does provide a way to create a shared list. So here's the page if you'd like to join in: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/41...

Oh, and I'm reading Brad Boney's The Return by Brad Boney right now, so this wasn't a total diversion. : )

Great idea! I have a few books about musicians I can add to the list when I get my laptop out and figure out how to do that.

Also makes me wonder how many other subjects we should be making lists for.

Jordan wrote: "Great idea! I have a few books about musicians I can add to the list when I get my laptop out and figure out how to do that.

It's easy to add books. You just click on the list link and then open the "add books" tab. It will open to your bookshelves if you have them, or you can just click on the word/line "search" from the "Add books from: my books or a search" option. You can also "vote" on books listed, but that's not so much my interest.

There's a "score" for each book that isn't valid at this point, since it's meant to be my rating of the books listed by virtue of the order I listed them in, but I just entered them alphabetically by author last name, then added a few more. So I may need to go back in and rearrange them sometime...

Can you only add books from your own shelf by voting for them? Or is there another way too? Where do I click to add a book from the list without clicking "add"? (if I make sense here...)

message 1035: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
When I added books, it appeared I could only add books that were already on my shelf. So, when I realized I'd only had the second Blue Notes book on my to-read shelf, I quickly added all the rest (after reading the blurbs to make sure I wanted them for sure) then added them by "voting" for them. I couldn't see any other way to add books.

Hope this helps!

Yes! I just added it, but please go ahead and add anything you think fits. I knew I'd missed a lot from even my personal shelves. I even missed K.Z.'s Xylophone and that was a 5-star read for me. "Luckily" someone added it and someone added Piper Vaugh's second "Lucky" book, so I added the other two in the series. Gads! I also missed Sinner's Gin, but found that the sequel Whiskey and Wry comes out on 8/19.

The colors of covers lists were the ones that cracked me up when I was looking for a "musicians" list. I was really surprised not to find one. Well, "Best Gay Rockers" seems likely. I'll check it out. : )

Interesting. There really aren't that many books in common between my new "musicians" list and Moderatrix Lori ’s started-in-2009 Best Gay Rockers list. So even though the premises are slightly different, it's a (kind of) history of our (this group's?) reading of music-themed gay-m/m books between then and now.

Looking at the rock star list, I added Wild Horses to my list. And I'd missed everything after Lucky Moon 2.5 and the other vignettes, so I added those since I've read or likely will read them.

Best Gay Romance featuring rock stars - started July 2009 (300+ voters), 91 books

M/M with musician MC(s) - started July 2013, 45 books

After I click the "add books to this list tab" the top line reads "Add books from: my books or a search." When I clicked on the word "search" it allowed me to add books not on my shelves. If that doesn't work maybe it's only an option for the list-maker?

Next time I'm on a computer and not my phone I'll look for that adding option, though I didn't see it yesterday.

Did anyone over at MMR think to make these lists available in Listopia?

Yeah, the lists get out of date really fast in this genre, don't they?

I wish I could spend my day listening to audio books.

I should be reading Strange Fortune around the time I'm on vacation for a few days and taking a train trip, so I'm looking at perhaps buying the audio book to listen to when I'm not reading the physical book. I'd forgotten that I'd bought the paperback and bought the ebook at one point, so I've got all varieties to pick from. We'll see how that goes.

I'm about five chapters away from finishing The Inventor's Companion and loving it! It's a very sweet story. Can't wait to get back to it later today.

Marge (margec01) | 599 comments I just finished Whistling in the Dark. What a lovely book. Truly as wonderful as you all have been saying. I have loved all of Tamara Allen's books, but I think this one is my favorite. Absolutely five stars.

I only haveThe Only Gold left to read from her. I think I'll hoard it a bit longer and just think fondly of Sutton and Jack for a while longer.

ttg | 305 comments For those interested, Gay Romance Northwest is hosting a "Secret Story" event on GoodReads.

What that means is from August 1-31, we'll be posting stories by authors attending the Meet-Up in Seattle, but we're posting the stories anonymously. Then on Sept. 1, we'll reveal the author names.

It's kind of a fun way to try an author without having preconceived notions (and maybe you'll be able to recognize a familiar author's style.) Secret Story events are pretty popular in fanfic communities, especially as a way for different writers to "gift" stories anonymously to each other.

For those interested, our first four secret stories are up; two are novel excerpts. http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

The Inventor's Companion and Whistling in the Dark — both favorites of mine. Happy reading!
