Susinok | 5205 comments What is it with me and my dislike of the over the top HEA? Winter Wonderland was a pretty good story, all told, but the ending was that of fairy tale quality. I realize it's a Christmas Story and I even WANTED smaltz, but ugh. Over the top!

But over all the story was fun, and the characters were good. Heidi Cullinan does indulge in the fairy tale ending quite often, so I should have just girded my loins in preparation.

I think a bit of angst with A Fortunate Blizzard will be just fine...

Hmm, How to Howl at the Moon is the one Eli Easton that was a DNF for me. I might try this one, though. I usually love her books.

It's a bit different than the first, though I loved the first one too, anyway, this one is still funny and light, and also touches on some serious issues.

Well...but you were JUST saying you wanted "total schmaltz"!

No wonder we writers are all crazy. :-D

LOL I know! I guess maybe only a bit of scmaltz. A Fortunate Blizzard is turning out well. LC Chase for the win. Maybe the bit of angst evens out the scmaltz.

I'm trying to remember.... It was probably just me. The characters didn't do anything for me and I think the idea of border collie shifters just didn't appeal. I think I put it aside and just never went back to it.

I haven't read all of her books but my faves are probably The Mating of Michael, Blame It on the Mistletoe, Unwrapping Hank and Superhero.

Ah, okay. I tend to like unconventional shifter stories and contemporaries/GFY don't do much for me, so I guess I'll still give it a shot. Thanks for the feedback!

Just finished Breaking the Chains of Gravity, which is a great non-fiction about the pre-NASA space program. Currently reading Infected: Prey which is a favorite and something of a comfort read. Next up (if I don't decide to read through the entire Infected series again) is probably Josh's newest book that just downloaded itself mysteriously onto my phone lol i swear I don't know how that happens.

I did start Slay Ride. I've extensively rewritten the first chapter, but it occurred to me that it was a bit dark for the holidays. Which was why I had originally not planned to do it as a Christmas story. Mass killings on Baby Jesus's birthday....not as festive as one might wish. ;-D

So I'm still working on that one, but most of my attention is now on A CASE OF CHRISTMAS which is a bit lighter. Still working my way through it, so it's hard to say what it will be when it grows up.

Also plugging in bits and pieces of Death in Autumn. Or maybe it will be called *A* Death in Autumn.

(Yes, that's the kind of thing I spend my time wondering about. :-D)

So three stories coming in the next few months--and that doesn't even include The Mermaid Murders.

I'm not getting very far with my reading. This time of year my body really tries to go into hibernation. I start craving carbs--lasagna, chicken pot pie...pecan pie...yeesh!

And I get so sleepy so early. I mean, I tend to be an early bird, but dozing off at nine thirty is a bit extreme even for me. And--thanks no doubt to the carbs--my dreams are so convoluted and weird.

So I am STILL on the last fifty pages of Green Plaid Pants and every night I think, well, surely I'll finish it off tonight. And two pages in, the book bounces off my nose.

I've been eating the best chicken pot pies. They're by Blake, and found in the frozen food section. But made of good quality stuff. Except the last one I had didn't have any vegetables in it! Then I read the box properly, and found out I was just eating a chicken pie. Um... really?! This is the best way for me to get veggies, and I was really bummed. lol.

But it's inspired me to attempt making my own "meet pie". I pinned several recipes from around the world the other day on pintrest. might get to try them next month.

This is why I read leaning on my elbow, with the book resting on the bed with a book weight holding it open for me. So much easier on the nose! And on the arms too!

I just started The Immortal Circus: Act One the other day and so far it's very good. It's about a circus run by faerie queen Mab, and it opens with a dead body. :-) First book in a trilogy, so we'll see how it goes, but I really am liking it so far.

Oooo lasagna! I need to make a few. I normally make 2 at a time, and freeze one.

I to am in hibernation mode. I can't seem to stay up to my normal bedtime. Then I'm wide awake worrying about work at 2am... sigh... (it'll get better... soon...)

Started Jefferson Blythe this morning!

Finally finished Green Plaid Pants. It was fun. Very light and I admire Scherf's ruthlessness toward her hapless characters. :-D

And I am starting GLASS ON THE STAIRS which is several years later and feels it. Feels quite different though I can't yet figure out why. It's not the tone, not the writing...

message 9838: by HJ (new)

HJ | 3603 comments I've just read Humbug by Joanna Chambers. It's really good; it's so accurate about working in a job which is focussed on hours logged and commitment, to the exclusion of everything else in life, that it's scary (I've been there). But it's also an excellent love story. And, as always with her books, it's really well written. Although it's set at Christmas time, it isn't especially Christmassy.

message 9839: by HJ (new)

HJ | 3603 comments I've also read two of Josh's books written as Diana Killian, Corpse Pose and High Rhymes and Misdemeanors. They are each the first in a series, and they are mysteries. High Rhymes and Misdemeanours feels more like romantic suspense (like those written by Mary Stewart, which I love). They are both F/M.

I really enjoyed both books, and I'm going to read the rest of the series. I expected to be able to recognise "Josh" in them more than I did, which I find interesting!
