KC | 4897 comments I started Song of the Navigator last week, but i think i needed a bit of a break from it - it is excellent, but tough; then this weekend: Loving Jay, light and fun, looks like, and The High Window, where I'm enjoying the writing so very much.

I've managed to read so little lately, but it's fun to read your posts and see that at least somebody has done some reading! :-)

I AM reading our August BOM book How to Repair a Mechanical Heart and my RL book club's (with fellow teachers of my school) book Memory of Water, so I'm not a total lost case. ;-)

Why did you people not make me read this sooner. ;-)

Glad you're enjoying it, Haldis. Jonty and Orlando only get better as time goes by. Book twelve, set all the way in 1921, is coming in October: Lessons for Sleeping Dogs. You've still got time to catch up! :)

Thanks Judy. I may check them out in a bit. I'm determined to get my summer reading books done on time, regardless of whether or not my supervisor will let me post my reviews to our blog like I said I would back in May.

Anyway, my next adult summer book is a JCP book! Can't wait!

I am enjoying the story of Monkey so far. I just wish I could have gotten further on Sunday, but that just wasn't a good day for me.

Damned, KJ's book is a secure epub on ARe, and I refuse to use Amazon when there's another option, well, OK, I just refuse to use them...

And I keep hoping there will be another option for audiobooks so I can ditch Audible.

Oh well, I guess I can read on my laptop.

Cool! I'm keeping this one for the travels. This, and the upcoming Charmed and Dangerous anthology.

message 9018: by Ame (new)

Ame | 1744 comments Idamus, do you have Gmail and Gdrive? Because you can upload your book into the drive and then open it up in an app called Cloudconvert and it can convert your book to mobi. I have bought books on ARe and converted them like this because I like to read on my Kindle, it's best for my eyes.

You do have to do it on the computer though, I haven't managed to do the convert thing on my phone.

Ooh, thanks Ame. I will look into this. Haven't really used Gdrive before. I've been avoiding those secure epubs because I haven't figured out how to convert them to mobi with Calibre. I'd rather not buy from Amazon, but sometimes the format has made it necessary.

Well, I have an even bigger goofy grin on my face than previously predicted :)

I love it. Not as much as Love Lessons but that is kind of impossible to do since it's my favorite HC book but I really love it. Sometimes totally over the top lovey dovey fluff but it just made me smile even more.

And also (view spoiler)

I also hope she'll write another on in the series, I have high hopes for (view spoiler)

I wasn't expecting it to be fluffy. I'm saving it for the beach this weekend - I hope I find lots of time to read. I'm sure I can count on Heidi for a happy ending.

Google Apprentice Alf to use Calibre. Once you have the plug-in I think you have to save/open the book in Adobe Digital editions and then add the book to Calibre and it will convert. It's been a while since I've done it so my memory is not so good...

I'm really enjoying the writing, the voice, the atmosphere. It's exciting and calming at the same time, and it can be trusted to be consistently precise (in the sense that every word's efficient and counts) and excellent.

I do have the Apprentice Alf stuff on Calibre and have never had a problem until quite recently, and now secure epubs don't convert. Not sure what changed, but this is the second time it's happened, so I think I may have to give up on that format. I tried Ame's Cloudconverter (thanks, Ame!) and it didn't convert it either, so I'm out of ideas. Last time it happened I just bought the book again on Amazon (it was only a dollar), so I think I'll just do that again. Clearly I need to pay a bit more attention to what format books come in. Thanks anyway, guys. :)

Yes to all Alison said. I read the free novellas and shorts and liked them a lot. It's so nice to discover a new author and explore the backlist! I bought today some more of her work and look forward to reading it!

Varecia | 956 comments I read the first installment in KC Charles' regency trilogy, A Fashionable Indulgence. I liked the way she showed lesser known aspects of society and I thought the book was nicely krafted, but I think I admired it more than I loved it. The second part looks very promising, we got a lot of hints in the first book and I am really really curious how this story will turn out. But deep in my heart I wish Charles would find the time to write another one about Archie and Daniel *sigh* :-))

Ame | 1744 comments I started reading Carry the Ocean last night. It's been on my reading list for few weeks but I had to muster up the courage to read since the topic is very close to my heart and I wasn't sure I could handle reading about characters with Autism and severe depression.

I'm only quarter in but I really, really like this story. What I've read has been realistic (mostly) and really well done. And I applaud HC for going with real autistic character instead of some Hollywood version of it in a YA movie. If you know what I mean.

I'm almost finished with Monkey: A Journey to the West! I've been really enjoying it and surprised by how similar it is to one of my favorite movies "The Lost Empire". Yeah, it's a made for TV movie, but honestly, while it may be a little cheesy, it's still a good movie.

I'll be starting JCP's The Persistence of Memory later this afternoon! Can't wait!
