My reading has been all over the place (as usual). We spent the week on our garage clean-out project. My husband took time off to work on it. Argh! But some headway into several years of neglect...

I take book-escape breaks whenever possible:
Attachment Strings
Every Move He Makes
The Square Peg — re-read before The Broken Triangle
Afflicted — re-read before Afflicted II
The Buyout
Black Dog Blues, a Rhys Ford fantasy with more graphic violence than I usually read, but still Rhys Ford

...and I'm about 75% through Brat Farrar, one I read so long ago I've forgotten who done it. : )

message 803: by Reggie (new)

Reggie I'm re-visiting Ty & Zane. I am working my way up to re-reading Touch & Geaux.

I was on the back porch reading Stars & Stripes, when War of the Squirrels broke out. I started seeing leave clumps jumping, then tails flying from tree limb to tree limb. There were 5 of them running up and down my neighbor's Redwood, chittering away. Luckily there were no casualties!

Isn't that a spoiler, Josh? As I recall, we don't learn about who the destroyer is for quite some time. Then again, my Swiss cheese memory could be messing with me. It's been awhile since I read the Rifter.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments I just started Omens by Kelley Armstrong. I picked up an ARC at RT, and I just realized if I want to read it while it's still an advance copy I'd better get on it!

It's the first of a new series for Armstrong, possibly not set in the Otherworld universe at all. It's a little early to tell. But so far it's good.

Johanna wrote: "And good to hear that the project Garage Clean-up wasn't a mission impossible. ;-) "

Let's just say it is an ongoing project. Although, hopefully I'll stick with it this time and finish in the foreseeable future. Last time I had boxes of things prepped for a mega-yardsale, then a garage door spring broke, things piled up, and next thing you know years had passed. When we went through the clothing I could have held on to it a bit longer and sold it as vintage! ;-)

Actually, our daughter is taking five very large bags to a donation center... and we did a yardsale/potlatch this weekend.

The last time I read an arc of the first book in a new series it was horrific. I finished the first book before it had come out and I was already drooling over book two which probably hadn't even had a first draft written at that point. Lol.

That was for Angel's Ink by Jocelyn Drake. I just got book two and can't wait until my long summer reading list is finished so I can read it.

I just finished The Good Thief by James Buchanan and it was pretty good. I'll admit there were times I wanted less sex and times I wanted the blow-by-blow of what was skipped over(not sex stuff), but otherwise it was a good story of a cop and a thief falling in love. And of course the dog was cute too :-)

L.A. Witt Covet Thy Neighbor 3 stars
K.Z. Snow Merman 4 stars
The Haunted Heart 5 stars
L. Kain The Dead Will Rise First 3 stars (3.5)
J. Byrnes Never Say Goodbye 1 stars (1.5)

and non m/m
F. Baum The Wizard of Oz 3 stars

Reread:
Lewis Carroll Alice in Wonderland 5 stars
Out Of The Blue 5 stars

I had the feeling I didn't read at all, but this wasn't too bad, considering that I was always together with people.

And I've just started Where I Am Now which looks promising

Question for Manga readers... Has anyone read Under Grand Hotel and is it worth buying at $20 each? I see the first two volumes available on Amazon but can't find the third, either.

I'm getting sick of waiting for the "on order" copy of volume one to arrive through the library while volume two is grossly over due. I'm sure I can order and read it faster if I pay for it myself at this point.

Under Grand Hotel has only 2 Volumes. It has much sex (and violence and rape), story is somehow not really existent, but I really liked it. The characters were sometimes really stupid, but adorable, lol.

I wish i read this book in my early 20s when i'd have really needed it. Now it's through more knowing eyes, but i can still imagine how it would have felt then, and i find it very emotional now, little things seem to spark such strong reactions.

I wish I'd had time to read it during that discussion. I read it earlier and I felt like it was really good, but I missed out on a lot. Maybe some time in the future I'll find time to reread it and read the chapter by chapter discussion while I do that.

Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig

This is a must read! It's a wonderful piece of literature and it broke my heart in many little pieces. Oh, I should mention that it's gay literature (well, the author defends the bisexual nature of humans but the whole thing deals just with a gay relationship) from South America written in the 70s during the military dictatorship in Argentina.

The discussion is definitely very helpful. I had this idea of taking an afternoon to read it but it became clear quite soon that that is not going to be the case.
The very thing (well, one of them) that probably makes one get stuck as to the meaning of a conversation, native and non-native English speakers alike, is actually something that i find to be very realistically written - those stilted almost conversations where no one can say exactly what they mean, all that tip-toeing around sensitive topics, trying to find out if the other person shares one's feelings and ideas, it's just so familiar. And the writing is beautiful.

Yes, me too, it would have been great to discuss it in real time. Still, i was glad to find that people were baffled by some of the things that baffle me, so i now have answers and ideas about most of the questions i had so far.

I read recently the first two parts of The Larton Chronicles and really liked it, so i plan to continue with it soon and read thru the BoM discussion.

Another manga question: Does anyone know whether there's an English version of the Natsuki Matsuoka/Kaoru Yukifuna Flesh & Blood (time travel and pirates)? I've only found this series on Amazon Japan. One of the book covers was the prompt image for Kim Fielding's LHNB story, Treasure. http://www.minitokyo.net/Flesh+and+Blood

Also there's an subtitled audio (no images) version of the first chapter or so on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glkXNy...

When I read Junk, I'm imagining it will make me want to clean house. Again. I keep offering to help friends (and their mothers) clean out their houses because they have some hoarding habits, but no one's taken me up on the offer yet. My apartment is too small for me to keep collecting stuff, which is a huge help for me.

My biggest problem is putting piles of things away, including the dirty laundry that piles up on the floor! yuck!

Psycop would be awesome in audio book. I'm starting to thoroughly enjoy rereading old favorites in audio. I love that series!

Bad Boyfriend is..... hot!! But I liked it.... I really liked it.... Eli and Quinn just clicked as a couple.... love them together.....

I reread once again Dex in Blue... I really love that book.... and Dex and Kane.... sometimes couples are just so right together that it's fantastic to read.....

I also read The Archer by Abigail Roux.... and I loved it! Even though there were parts I didn't like.... like the extremely (view spoiler).... the plot and the twists and turns not to mention the characters totally sucked me in and I ended up reading through the night because I couldn't stop and couldn't sleep and when I finally finished I could have cried because I didn't want it to be finished!!

And really that's it.... that is what makes stories good... if you can't put them down or stop reading.... no matter if it's "high" literature or just "lowly" romance......;)

Don't panic. Junk is not out 'til August. Jo gave me a copy for helping her with the pre-reads :D I loved it, but it hasn't made me review my buying/collecting patterns or anything. Of course now most of my books are electronic it's not so much of a problem until you open my Kindle. I'm trying to keep the numbers on my Nook more managable.

I have the first five/six? books in the Cut & Run series (I picked them up when Fictionwise was still open) but I'm worried about starting something that so many people have loved in case I really don't like them. And I have Psycop too, but again I haven't read it yet. Maybe I should stop ready fanfic/free online fic, then I'd have time. Or I could stop writing myself, that'd give me a few extra hours a week!!!!
