Finished The Rifter and of course, now I don't know what to do with myself. Lol. I hate that lonely feeling I get after finishing a fantastic series. I feel like I've just said goodbye to extremely good friends that I'll never see again.

I think I'll start the third Scorpion book by Aleks later tonight. We'll see. Following up the Rifter is hard!

Na | 354 comments I'm rereading the Song of the Fallen series by Rachel Haimowitz. I saw the first book had a new cover. The ebook was open, so...

Varecia | 956 comments I finished Aldous Mercer's The Prince and the Program (The Mordred Saga, #1) by Aldous Mercer , which I bought because I liked the blurb (and the cover :-)) That was another case where I just swam along and surely missed a lot of the points made, but I was definitely hooked. Could have done without the deadless at the end... urgh.

Now I will return to Alexis Hall's Liberty and Other Stories (Prosperity, #2-4, 6) by Alexis Hall . I read half of it immediately after the book came out, but then I needed a short break of the prosperityverse and went to read some contemporary fiction.

message 7457: by Varecia (new)

Varecia | 956 comments After finishing Liberty and Other Stories I read two of Charlie Cochrane's shorter historicals settled around WWI, which I enjoyed very much:
Promises Made Under Fire by Charlie Cochrane Awfully Glad by Charlie Cochrane
I find that I like her historicals more than the contemporaries and the shorter ones more than the novels, which is surprising because I usually prefer longer stories. But she is very good in making characters quite real in just a few pages.

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) And scanning house listings. Still no word on our offer. Our agent says it could easily be 45 days before we hear anything at all -- that's the tough part about a short sale. Meantime I see all these houses flying past. None of them quite as perfect regarding location, but almost all of them in better shape.

I have to remind myself we're not in a hurry. We're in the ideal position to wait.

As somebody whose sale got finalised a whole year after our offer (we were at the end of a complex chain in one of the worst housing markets in recent memory), I feel for you and keep my fingers crossed!

Susinok | 5205 comments I started something completely different this morning. It's an urban fantasy with a Latino main character (I think Puerto Rican but it hasn't been specified) - Half-Resurrection Blues by Daniel Jose Older. I found out about the book on an article about the derth of POC characters in all genres. So far it's very well written, and the story gets started right away. It's also not a 700 page brick.

The author has a video on why he does not italicize the Spanish words in his text. Makes total sense.

I just started reading A Taste for Poison last night! Though I feel like I should have reread the first two to remind myself what happened. Oh well.

I've realized that if I have to move by the end of August, I really need to start reading all the unread print books on my coffee table. So, I changed some of my series challenge books to print books. I need to clean house and get rid of books I want to read once but maybe not keep. You know? I've got to stop buying books and read what I have! Less to pack this way! But still, that's a daunting task. There must be 100 books on my coffee table I have yet to read!

message 7461: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments Packing up my books gives me the dry heaves. I have THREE floor to ceiling bookshelves FULL. Two are four feet wide and the main one is 8 feet wide...

I have a half-high (3 feet) shelf FULL of JUST Cookbooks alone!

Oh and I forgot my Knitting bookshelf. Another 3x4 feet, FILLED!

I do NOT have a book hoarding problem! I can still open all my doors (even if I don't want to)... I can and do thin them out from time to time.

Moving them? Shudder! In my house browse this weekend I found a house with an entire room lined with shelves. Nice! :)

message 7462: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments But you can see from the above why I have whole-heartedly embraced the e-book! Lately it's very rare for me to buy in print. Mostly non-fiction (new photography book or jewelry making..)

So much for my "I'm not buying any more books for awhile!" sentiment. lol. I just found out that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is set, at least in part, in my home town, and that one of the opening scenes is set in our five-and-dime store that's been around since the 40's! The description of the store is accurate. Except for the computer. The actual store doesn't have a computer. The grandson of the original owners(mentioned in the book!), who runs it now, says the store sells 10,000 unique and hard to find items and he knows where it all is and how much is left in his head! So, he doesn't use a computer for keeping inventory. Wow. Also, it was funny to read about how the narrator seethed at watching the locals patronize the CVS down the street. Yep, that happened. And within the last two years our local drug store closed because of the CVS, which is one of the only chain stores allowed to open in town.

Not a place I would ever want to move back to. But I bet it would be really fun to run a real five-and-dime store like that one. It's just too bad I couldn't open one in the city here. There's no point to it, sadly.

And yes, in 2015, we still have a five-and-dime store! Nothing about that place has changed, except that within the last 15 years at some point the current owner finally upgraded the ancient cash registers and brought out brand new toys from the basement where they'd been sitting for decades to put them on display.

Despite my deep love of her romantic suspenses, I've never read Mary ... i I really enjoyed The Crystal Cave last summer and I guess I've been in a mood for stories about kings because everything I've been reading lately has at least one king in it. lol.

I'm enjoying this second book too, only I can't seem to concentrate on anything yesterday and today so I still haven't gotten very far, despite enjoying it!

But I have yet to read anything else by her, though I know several people hear have recommended her other works in the past.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I am reading Someone Killed His Boyfriend by David Stukas. It is a kind of comedy whodunnit and i am enjoying the humour and the different characters. A good series for when i need a lighthearted read. I am also reading Blacker than Black by Rhi Etzweiler. This is the first time i am reading anything by this author and i am really enjoying this. It is a sci fi story with vampires and i just love the world building and there is a mystery at the heart of the story as well.

I just posted this on the AUDIO BOOK GIVEAWAYS thread, but also wanted to post it here:

Have you guys read Slings and Arrows (Petit Morts #2) by Josh Lanyon ? Did you remember that Slings and Arrows is set around Valentine's Day? A perfect read (re-read!) for this week! :-D

You can also find it in Sweet Spot The Petit Mort Stories by Josh Lanyon and In Sunshine or in Shadow (Short Stories, Volume 1) by Josh Lanyon — and the latter you can find also in audio.
