I really enjoyed The King's Men and the whole series, although it was violent at times. But it is very original and I love it when an author dares to step outside the boundaries and manages to make it work.

Becky Black (beckyblack) Sudden urge to read A Christmas Carol. :-)

I need to do this too but I know I can't go cold turkey on buying books. I will set myself 5 books a month, many the beginning of a series, from my TBR list and read them. That should take care of a few.

Not sayin' how many books in my Moonreader App I have, but it's about double your number, and that does not count the ones on Kindle app...

Oh yeah, Zero Hour was great! I got it in print where the cover picture wraps around to the back.

I should concentrate on books I already own next year too, after my series challenge, for which I had to buy a bunch of new books. Lol.

It reminds me of Fahrenheit 451 with a dash of Logan's Run, but scarrier, creepier and more bizarre

That's on my Kindle waiting for me. I think I'll try to do it pretty early in the new year.

Becky Black (beckyblack) I'm also going to attempt to make a big dent in my books already owned and to read stack, before buying others - though there are of course exceptions for certain authors. :D

It's so hard though. You see someone rec something and it sounds awesome. Or there's a great bargain on a second hand book stall... But c'mon fifty pence for a book doesn't even count, right? ;-)

When I say ones I own, I'm not even talking about the "maybe later" folder where I've picked up ones that were free for a limited time or something and looked pretty good but am in no rush to read. I'm saving those for if I'm ever really skint and can't afford to buy new ones for a while. :D

Next year I've got the Sherlock Holmes canon reread challenge, but I'm not doing a number of books read challenge, because I've got some long ones to read and having a number of books challenge pushes me towards shorter ones! I'm also intending to do the rest of the Henry Rios series, after loving the first one, but I'm going to do them in audio.

I just started reading Annabel by Kathleen Winter for the Transgender GR group BOM. It's set in Labrador Canada which is a relatively new setting for me. So far it's really good, but it's also hard to read knowing the choice the father has made about his baby and the gender surgery that's about to happen. Poor kid!

Ok. I started Murder at Pride Lodge and I am 20% in and it seems that instead of doling out bits of history while telling a story, he is feeding me history while doling out bits of story. I am going insane. Does the story start moving? Should I hang in there or am I looking at more of the same if I continue?
Maybe I should take a break and read A Study in Scarlet for the Sherlock Holmes challenge.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments Like everyone else next year I am going to try and read books i already own. I wont buy any book unless it is something i am going to read immediately (famous last words). :)

I love my annual reading challenge but next year i am going to have a paper back challenge as well. I have about 100 paperbacks from across very different genres and i really want to read them. Plus some of Josh's books too. Should make for a great reading year. I am quite excited about getting into them.

message 7064: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments I think I'm also going to do a series challenge. I have a few I really want to finish. I think I'm starting with Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series (urban fantasy). I read the first 6 but need to reread and finish the series now that it's complete. I had all the paperbacks but I think I gave them away. I can only find one of them now. Grrr.

I just finished re-reading A Case of Possession. I think I liked it better on the second reading. Moving on to Flight of Magpies.

Anne | 6816 comments In between preparing food and eating food and watching Harry Potter ( one of our TV channels is showing one HP movie every evening) I also have got some reading on. Several days were used reading Fool's Assassin the first in a new trilogy. Now I want to reread the first books.

Then My Heartache Cowboy and My Cowboy Homecoming, both which I enjoyed more than the first in the series.

Now I have started Lamentation the last of the Shardlake series.

Outside it is very cold, both my kids have left again, there is fire in the fireplace, candles are giving warmth and light and there is reading under a blanket :)

How do you like Fool's Assassin? I loved the two trilogies that came before. I have Fool's Assassin from the library but the book is physically so think I may end up buying it in ebook.

I can't spell assassin apparently. Each time got spell-checked.

message 7077: by Anne (new)

Anne | 6816 comments I liked Fool's Assassin very much. I can see that many reviewers say it is boring and slow and that nothing much happens the first half of the book. I can see why they think so in a way, but for me it felt a necessary build up and stage setting. Besides, I enjoy the writing immensely and loved the description of Fitz' life and surroundings, so I didn't find it boring even if there were little outward action. So yes, I recommend it and have already pre-ordered the next book in the series. It is great also to revisit this particular world and the people in it.

message 7078: by Varecia (new)

Varecia | 956 comments I am making my way through the MLR freebies and must say that I am quite surprised - there were books where I thought how could something as badly written could be officially published *gulp* and others I enjoyed very much (they fulfilled their aim working like a teaser and I will surely buy the other books in the series).

And in honor of Idamus' Wiking essay *grin* I read Harper Fox' Brothers of the Wild North Sea by Harper Fox at last and look now forward to Alex Beecroft's The Reluctant Berserker by Alex Beecroft

:-)

I feel like I need to get re-acquainted to normal levels of insight in the characters feelings with this one. After reading so many romance novels (mm and otherwise) where you know every last little emotion of your MC Peter felt distanced and a little detached to me. Especially in the way he doesn't seem surprised by the magic at all.
It takes a while until everything comes together. It took up some momentum for me now.

That makes sense. I also think, for me, that it is very British and I have to be in the mood for that. I felt like I was maybe missing something or not understanding things like I should. I probably just need to listen when I am better able to concentrate on the story.

I finished Life Lessons by Kaje Harper over Christmas (from the MLR freebies) so now I'm trying to decide whether to continue that series, read some Boystown by Marshall Thornton (I listened to the first audio book on my drive home) or read a book called Crypt City by William Kowalski, which is supposed to be a cold-war thriller type with a gay protagonist. I might have to flip a coin because they all sound good to me.

I finally started the last book on my currently reading shelf yesterday on the bus into work. It's been on that shelf since October, so yay! This is a Dean Koontz book called Icebound from 1976 about scientists who went north to break off an iceberg to float south for parched farm land. So far it's interesting. Natural disasters will get in the way, I'm thinking.

Then, after this one, I'll start my reread challenge with The Rifter!!!

message 7093: by Haldis (new)

Haldis | 1288 comments The Rifter is on my reading challenge and this is my first time through. I need to get the third e-book.

message 7094: by Varecia (new)

Varecia | 956 comments During the last days I went through the books I read in 2014 and found Goodreads very helpful for that - I used just to jot down booktitles somewhere and lost half of those papers by the end of the year of cause. I had a lot of remarkable reading experiences last year, found some new authors I really like and threw a ton of books out from the Kindle, because I could not remember anything (positive) about the story even after rereading the first page!

I set up a shelf for reads in 2015: I want to read the Rifter (bought the paperbacks a while ago), the Brandstetter series, Michael Nava's The City of Palaces: A Novel, Sarah Water's trilogy, the Peter Grant series...

I really look forward to this :-)))

Valerie (valerie_c) | 1519 comments The Rifter was one of my favorite reads of 2014, so I just started Lord of the White Hell (for the first time). Can't believe I waited so long to read it. Seems like a great way to start off the new year. :)

I read a lot of contemporary romance last year. Now I think I am in the mood for more fantasy and UF/Paranormal reads this year. Just need to mix it up, I think.

I've been deleting lots off the Kindle, too. I usually delete books from my Kindle when I finish them so it doesn't seem so cluttered. I have about 1500 in the Kindle cloud so it seems impossible to organize all of those, but I'm trying to organize the books actually on my Kindle that I need to read. I have been going through my TBR books and deleting those I am pretty sure I won't read. I'm down to less than 300 on my Kindle and that seems more manageable to me.

What Goodreads has taught me is that as much as I love the idea of keeping accurate records and notes on everything I've read -- and as much as I enjoy other people doing so -- it's really not in me to keep up with that.

And I am okay with this. I now accept that I am doomed to repeat-buy the same books over and over. I will just have to live with my disorganized reading. :-D

I don't even know if I can get through January without buying any books but it would be a good idea to try. It really is amazing how many books I have "discovered" in my Kindle account that I forgot I bought.

I try to add every book I buy to my GR shelves but it doesn't always happen. I'll never be that organized.
