You read it wrong. Or maybe you were reading about the next book which is a bit peculiar There Will Be Phlogiston (Prosperity, #5) by Alexis Hall .

Susinok | 5205 comments I am going to keep my "must reads" down to five books. I get cranky if I can't choose what I want, and it's been a while since I've done a reading challenge of any sort.

1. The Charioteer by Mary Renault - because FINALLY!
2. A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle - for the Holmes read. Not sure if I have read this one before or not. If I have it's been so long ago this will be like new.
3. Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale.
4. Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewellyn - been meaning to read this forever.
5. Boystown: Three Nick Nowak Mysteries by Marshall Thornton - about time!

Another reason for keeping it to 5 for now is that some of these are book 1 of a series. Knowing me, I'll read the series after reading the first book, so I need time to do so. I think I'll do this every month. Get my TBR beaten down a bit.

Glad to see I am not the only one! I read the first Boystown in summer and went on a binge read of the whole (so far) series immediately after - great books to start with and I thought they got even better when the author decided along the way to prolong the stories into "real" novels!

I decided to go for the Rifters in January and start my small private Hansen challenge afterwards, maybe in February.

IMO it was very much m/m and of course generally queer.

Thanks for the link to the interview. I will check it out. I haven't gotten far yet (no time to read today, unfortunately) so I only know so far that Dil, the narrator, is bisexual. I kind of like the idea of (hopefully) well written bi characters, and I like reading m/f as well as m/m so I wouldn't mind m/f pairings. The thing that bothers me in some m/m books where the MC is bisexual, or in GFY or OFY, is that they can get misogynistic. That REALLY bothers me.

I think There Will Be Phlogiston is m/m/f which should be interesting.

I need to do a TBR challenge AND a "finish the series" challenge! I need to finish Boystown, Brandstetter, and many more.

I need to read more Ginn Hale. I read the Rifter this year, now I need to read Wicked Gentlemen and Lord of the White Hell. And Irregulars! I already own them all.

I don't know about the rest of the series, hopefully there will be more m/m. :)

I've read very little m/m/f or m/f/m, maybe that will be another challenge for the new year - to find some good ones. ;-)

message 6963: by Susinok (last edited Dec 14, 2014 05:55PM) (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments Prosperity is m/m but the main couple does not include Dil. Dil is the narrator of the story.

Phlogostin is m/m/f sort of. The final scene is not really a menage scene, more of an m/m scene with an observer. And it's FREE! If you don't like it, you're not out anything but a little time.

Both stories were excellent. I love Alexis Hall's way with the English language. He's a real master at it.

Rosamond in Phlogostin has to be one of my favorite heroines from a historical. Up there with Jess from Lord of Scoundrels. She is so very frustrated with her situation in life, and at the end, discards it all. I loved it.

But how is it emotionally? Like which characters are emotionally invested in each other? I'm still not sure it's my cup of tea. Sounds like I wouldn't like the ending if it ends with a threesome. I want my romantic couple to end up together.

Susinok | 5205 comments OMG one of my favorite mystery series is now available on Kindle! It is the Napoleon Boneparte series by Arthur W. Upfield! He wrote these books from the 30s to the 50s and they are all set in Australia. All over Australia, in fact.

Napoleon Boneparte is a half-aboriginal detective who can go from Hercule Poirot type fussiness to full bush in a loincloth. He is fascinating and the mysteries give you an interesting glimpse into Australia.

If you like classic mysteries and interesting locations, check these out!

Oh, I sooo need to do a challenge to finish a few series. Mahu, Have Body Will Guard, and Boystown are the first three to come to mind. I've only read the first Boystown, while the others I'm only behind by a book or two.

Maybe in February, that can be my thing. Getting things done always feels good, even when I don't want a series to end, simply because there's always a new series waiting for discovery. Or new books in a current series getting pubbed. Time to catch up!

*smacks forehead* How could I have forgotten about The Chronicles of Narnia?! I've been wanting to reread them for about ten years or so, which is why I bought them in the first place, and why I'd pulled them off my shelves a few months ago. *sigh* something will have to come off the list. There's no way I'll be able to read all of that plus this. Lol. Even without other time commitments I'm not that good.

Stupidly stayed up late to figure out that I would drop Wicked Gentlemen in favor of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. At least the first book is a good start.

Then spent time figuring out what series I need to catch up on. Oh boy. I'm behind in several up to about 14 books. So when I create my February book list I'll have to cut some things out.

Both lists are almost too long to enjoy them so we'll see how far I get.

Should I persevere? Does it get more gripping soon?

Maybe it is better to read by yourself, not to listen? I have read it twice and definitely feel the love, but it is written perhaps in a slower style than more modern books? It gets more gripping I would think, but it is slow going.

I've been wanting to *read* them for about ten years or so ;-).

And now I could.

I just checked the used copy I got for free because it was hazardous to health, totally smoked. Thank to the Armenian paper one of you recommended (thank you very much, I'm sorry I can't remember who), it is now readable, it smells of smoke only if you really put your nose in it.

Susinok | 5205 comments Narnia is one of those classics that I could not get into. I've read Lion, and chronologically the first volume, the name of which I've forgotten. I think I read the one that comes after Lion, not sure. But again, I never did get into it.

I think part of the reason is I never read it as a kid. I never came across it or knew about it until I was well grown.

The Charioteer was not an easy read for me. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I'd wanted to. There was a lot I didn't get, so I figured reading it again, or listening to the audio would be good for me. I want to give it a second chance. So I went to buy the last three Boystown books that I don't own yet, and as was stated, they're being rereleased with new covers, which means even the older editions aren't available except in print and audio, I think.

So, I preordered #5-6, but for some reason #4 is unavailable. Hmmm... hope it becomes available soon!

I'm thinking of doing this series challenge over two months, which will give the rest of Boystown time to be released in late February.

One can hope the comments we read and generate will help get us through it.

My brain has been in *Idea Generation Mode* since last night. I blame watching The Hobbit 2. lol.

Would it be more beneficial for those planning to read The Charioteer next month if we read it one chapter at a time, and then comment about it? Off hand I don't recall how many chapters are in it, but we could say, read X number per week, or something?

I'm hoping to have my reread done by the end of the month, so I'm not sure a one chapter a week would work, but something else might.
