Marilyn | 2 comments Hi everyone, I have a question.
A month ago I combine a few editions of a travel book. It was a lonely planet, Southwest USA, they are now to the 6th edition and I combined 2 previous editions with the new one that I own.
And I've just found out that someone separates them.
So I was wondering, about travel books especially, should the different editions be combined or not ? Of course they should have the same title obviously. I understand it must be tricky sometimes because the contributing authors might change from one edition to the other. But I though it would be useful to have all the reviews grouped together.

Usually, yes. Might be worth messaging the other librarian and asking why they separated them. Perhaps they have information you do not -- or perhaps they made a mistake.

Esme | 17 comments I'm this librarian and stumbled by accident in these discussion because I've seen Marilyn's librarian note for this book. I'm working at the Lonely Planet Guides since two or three months now, separate them and combine them new together by authors. I've got a message from a super librarian who said the author should be a real person and not the publisher and this is said in the goodrads policy too. That's the reason I made changes for all the guides with Lonely Planet Publication in the first author position. Here is the discussion about this topic: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...
What now?

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments As Esme notes discussion on this has occurred in the link she provides

GR policy is to use real names for authors/editors not publisher where possible.

If the editor/author changes between editions then it is not possible to combine editions. It is acceptable to create a series to link the editions together in this instance despite them not meeting series definition criteria.

Editions with different primary authors should not be combined and then author position changed as this causes other problems

Marilyn | 2 comments Ok then, thanks for the specifications and the link to the older discussion. The situation is not ideal for reference books that are updated through the years but anyway, good luck with your work Esme. The LP books are a real mess, in the database I mean, some are duplicated, the same edition combined with two different other ones !
