Should there be one world language?

It doesn't seem to be possible for people to take up a 'one world, one language' motto alright. Considering, normally, our need to be something "unique".

On another hand, it is possible for people's 'roots and culture' and other ideologies to hold them back from actually accepting a 'world language'.

No. This kind of setting is fine. People try to understand each other, and that's good enough. Besides, we have music :D

So, basically discard all culture and leave us in one mound of commonality. That would be so dull. That's tearing people of their history, their heritage. Um, no. I plan on learning japanese and spanish, but it is a cool book idea.

In interesting thing to consider is the fact that in almost all sci-fi, inhabitants of other planets always have one language and no countries. Is this a subliminal thing that we have that drives us to consider unification "advanced"? Is it a result of a thing that makes us believe that such borders are culturally advanced, and it's a desire to be superior that causes us to be not unified in the stories? Or is it just impressive laziness?
