Merging bookshelves/tags?

Is it possible to merge bookshelves so the logistics are more accurate?
For example, there are so-and-so number of non-fiction, so-and-so number of nonfiction and some more non fiction books shelved. Wouldn't it be easier to search by shelf if they were merged?

Yes, but there has been a lot of resistance to restricting personal choice in the way shelves are named. SFSqrl did a fairly comprehensive list of some of the oddities awhile back, but it includes issues of pluralization (mystery vs. mysteries), punctuation (non-fiction vs. nonfiction), abbreviation (don't get us started on sciencefiction vs. scifi), and spelling variants (favorite vs. favourite).

I personally would like to see some better way to cross link shelves which are identical in concept (if not name) but it's not at all clear how to do it.
