The Dumbest Scene in the Book?

For me it's the scene where Gatsby's tossing his shirts over the balcony, bringing Daisy to tears. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy it. What a meaningless, hair-brained, indulgent thing to do. What was his point? To show off? And Daisy crying? Give me a break. Both characters lost credibility with me in that one scene.

It did seem a weird scene to me, too.
But, don't forget they were both very sentimental at that point of the story. The met after 5 years and Daisy remembered the feelings she had for him back then, when he was a just a boy.
Now he has grown up to be a man. And by throwing all those -expensive- shirts at her, he shows to her what he has managed all these years. How Great he has become. He has managed to become one of them, to belong to the high social class.
Her crying is maybe a way of acknowledging that.
Sorry for my english, it's not my native language.

Or is it because she realizes he is still a boy pretending to be a man, pretending to be one of the higher social class? Acting in such a way?

Perhaps she does love him deeply, but I think she mourns both of them in this scene, because neither one has really lived a happy life since they last parted.

I thought there were two ridiculous scenes. I have always hated the pharmaceutical billboard scene. That was the scene that initially created my distaste for the novel as I thought it but affectedly portentous.

The other was the director and his actress at Jay´s party. I got the sense that SF had witnessed a scene similar and never quite made out what was transpiring, one which stuck in his thoughts and had to put to paper somewhere.

The scene between Nick and that guy on the elevator (his name escapes me at the moment) at the end of Chapter 2. I wouldn't necessarily call it dumb, but it just perplexes me. Did Nick get drunk and sleep with him? I've always wondered, especially since it seems to come out of nowhere, is never mentioned again and has absolutely no impact on the larger plot whatsoever.

You know what's really strange? I actually forgot the scene was in the book. I saw it happen in the movie with Robert Redford and I thought it was the stupidest scene in the entire movie. Hearing the scene happened in this book I only discovered it by people who have mentioned it on this site.

I think what the scene is trying to imply is that The Great Gatsby's life changed the moment he saw Daisy. She made him not care about the material things anymore and throwing his shirts to the floor (men during those times probably took precious care of their daily wear and suit clothes!) was letting her know he only cared about her from then on.

agree absolutely with bubbles - i don't get the adoration for this book at all.

The entire book is pretty dumb.
