I personally think a TV series is a better option, if at all someone wants to adapt it, because it gives a complete picture and the essence of the author, rather than just compressing everything into just 120 minutes or so.

I think it depends on the book - a stand-alone book would prob serve better as a movie/mini-series, whereas a book series would be more conducive to a tv show

Yeah, even a Stand-alone book. For example, they want to make Digital Fortress into a movie, it would be rather difficult. A mini-series, as you say,

I think it very much depends on the book. Most thrillers can get away with a film imo, they live more from the pace and action. However, slower, more in-depth books can benefit from more attention. Classics tend to be more about culture, society and personal feelings, not something that fits easily into a two hour time slot. The Harry Potter books would make excellent series. So much of the kids' growing up was missed out in the films, esp in the later ones.
A TV series would be better.....with all the little things that make a particular series what it is, plus a lot of character building...!
Sweeping Generalization--> If you just look a comparable lengths, very short novels (novelettes, novellas, etc.) make decent movie length (1:40-2:20) starting points. Longer novels tend to be mini-series length (n x 0:45-1:40*). Shorter works, like short stories, tend to be single episode TV length (0:20-0:50). For long novel series, especially serials, TV series tend to be the best fit. Most sci-fi novels published before the 1980s probably would have made good Movie-of-the-Week (1:10-1:20) fodder.
*Don't forget commercial times. A 1 hour TV show may only have roughly 0:45 minute of actual content.

Has there ever been a good tv series out of a book? Apart from the very recent Game of Thrones?
Aravind Kannan
Game of Thrones is a very good example, isn't it, to justify the TV series conversion? It's the top rated TV series on IMDB. So, that just proves it!

Hmmm. Tough call. These days I'm going to have to say TV series. Had you asked me 10 years ago, I'd have said movie. The problem with a TV series adaptation has been that they just don't have the budget that films traditionally have. So, for most books (particularly a period piece) they wind up using a lot of cheap sets and mediocre costumes.
In the last decade, however, that's changed quite a bit. TV shows have been getting better production values. In part, that's because of the technology involved, but it also has to do with the amount of money dedicated to them.
