what to do with boring books?

The only time I don't finish a book is if it's so offensive to the senses that it makes me physically ill. I feel that if a book makes me feel any other feeling (including bored), I'd like to expound on it in reviews. I once read a chapter where the author described a plot-irrelevant trip to the mall in detail, including how certain shoes didn't fit her because her foot was too narrow...and I kept going. It was a bad read, but I feel better knowing it and being able to share it.

I always finished every book I started. A few years ago I joined a book club in which most of the members are old enough to be my mother or grandmother. One of them has a 50 page rule. If she can't get into a book she stops reading. She'll just say, "I'm too close to death to waste my time reading crap!" then talk about how bad/bored/etc the 1st 50 pages were. I think that's a great and liberating idea.

I will normally give any book 50-100 pages (depends on overall length of the book). If I still feel it's doing nothing for me at that point I move on. I used to force myself to finish anything I started but I realized that life is too short to read something I don't get any satisfaction from.

With that said, I've ran into a lot of bad books so I refuse to buy anything without checking it out of the library first to make sure I'm actually going to finish it. If it passes the initial test then I buy, but not before.

I choose my books after a lot of looking around so if I don't like a book I put a genuine effort like reading 10 pages a day or a chapter a day too try and finish it. If it still doesn't appeal to me then I skim through the pages and later read a summary to find out why did people like the book or what were the key takeaways.
You can call it my OCD but I cannot leave a book halfway. I agree with all the life is short comments and totally respect the viewpoint. But leaving a book midway or rushing to finish feels like - Mario reached the flag but he did not collect any coins, mushrooms or stars along the way :D

get the audiobook from the library for free. I have enjoyed many books I would never had finished if I was reading it paperback. Going through Pride and Prejudice right now.
