I do feel like that sometimes, too. You re-examine your story too much, and ..."
I think I just have a one-track mind. It's either music or writing, one or the other, but not both. :-)

My problem is that I just can't get into the story when the music is on because I start singing along with the song or humming the melody. Although, now that I think about it, I have had some luck with music in the background if it's some really abstract jazz where, if there is any melody, it's so massively obscured you couldn't hum along if you wanted to. But then I start tapping out rhythms with my finger nails on the edges of my laptop. I did try the droning sounds of an Aboriginal didgerido in the background. Sort of works okay but after a while I end up in an altered state of consciousness and forget that I'm supposed to be writing. ;-)

Exactly! :-)

1. Music. I often create playlists that are songs that either fit the mood and feel of the story, or I create a playlist of the central character's music player in the story. I usually use grooveshark for this.
2. Sounds. I really like mynoise.net for various soundscapes. They have wind and rain, but also crowd murmuring, wind chimes, ASMR triggering noises, a whole variety.
I rarely write in silence. I find that it's really easy for me to get distracted if there's nothing to hear.
