Shari When my great great grandfather, James John Howard "JJH" Gregory, started a traveling library for southern schools (in 1909) he asked for suggestions of books to include. Thirty-five schools responded. Those books receiving the most requests were "Life of Lincoln" and "Little Women."

Interesting that all these years later they are still books people are interested in reading!

Stephen Interesting topic. I would like to know what other books were on the list. Perhaps you could make a listopia list of them.

Were any Jane Austen books on the list? What about the books mentioned heavily in Little Women? e.g. Pilgrim's Progress etc?

Shari Other books that were requested were:

Pilgrim's Progress
Life of Douglass
Ivanhoe
Paul Dunbar
Ramona
Souls of Black Folks
Uncle Remus
Grimm's Fairy Tales
Robinson Crusoe
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Swiss Family Robinson
Alice in Wonderland
John Halifax
Last Days of Pompeii
Charles C. Coffin's works

Stephen Kinda surprised that no works of Shakespeare made the cut!

Shari Maybe because the schools were high schools and colleges.
