Bargle | 1762 comments I don't have much to go on for this one.
Set on another planet.
Detective is non-humanoid. He is of some sort of high rank/social status. He carries a bit of fancy sewing or decoration as a means of identifying himself. It is normally worn on the outer clothing and represents his status/job, but he dresses below his status/job at times. He uses the decoration like a badge.
As best I recall, he was a thinking type of detective, not a hard-boiled type. Something along the lines of Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Nero Wolfe, etc.

Bargle--was he kind of a 3 legged crab type being? And his people had 3 sexes? His, Hers and Hisers being the sexes. And the mystery was the murder of a prominent scientist? If so, I will see if I can locate the title for you, as I read it many moons ago. (According to my grandkids it was probably back in the Age of Dinosaurs, but hey, what do THEY know, right?) :o)

Oh, and the cover had 2 of the crab like aliens involved in what looked like an old west stand-off? They were bright orange, I think.

Margaret Previous poster sounds like she's describing Their Majesties' Bucketeers, if that helps.

Bargle, I shelved the book for you. And congrats on finding it so fast. I had to sleep on it to remember the name, so was happy that Margaret knew it first.
