Chrissie I have finished Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. I absolutely loved it. 5 stars. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who has any interest in world history.
My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Have started Cloudstreet. I wasn't all that drawn to the book description, but many of my friends say it IS really good. We will see what I think!

Pam Williams | 156 comments I just finished Madge's Mobile Home Park: Volume One of the Peavine Chronicles for this month's book club. I'm from Arkansas so this book was close to my heart and I really enjoyed it. I'm rereading Gone Girl for next month's book club. I just picked up When She Woke and The Casual Vacancy. Does anyone have a recommendation on which of the last two I should read first?

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Finished Dead End for Connections Challenge.

Read Serenity series: Serenity: Those Left Behind, Better Days, Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale for the perfect Space Western SciFi Challenge.

Read In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak because my prurient side got the best of me and I had to see what all the fuss was about!☻ It's a No No

The Children of Green Knowe because someone said every child has read it, and I felt left out.☺ Cute, fanciful and If you are a child who has not read it, you probably should.

This is How You Lose Her for my Other Worldly Challenge and because I was once number 24 on the library waiting list and knew I wouldn't be able to renew it. I'm done with Pulitzer Prize Winner, Junot Diaz, Hmph!, I just am not Dominican savvy!
Almeta's Review of This Is How You Lose Her

Killer Instinct because I heard Charlie Fox’s background and profession was more unusual than other kick-ass female heroines. Another series of which I must now keep track.

Now on to The Man Who Loved Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of Literary Obsession becuase it will sooon be due at the library!

Pam, I have Rowling's book on my list for the Alphabet Challenge, so I cannot speak to it yet, but I thought When She Woke was pretty good! The Peavine Chronicals sounds interesting. I might have a look.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished This House is Haunted This House is Haunted by John Boyne for the Alphabet challenge. This was an interesting read full of intrigue, suspense and likeable characters. However, it wasn't as scary as I might have hoped and for that reason I gave it a 4 star rating.

Next up I will finally be reading The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald in preparation for seeing the film.

I've read a few Uncle Oswald short stories. The sexism, while I don't agree with it at all, I can generally deal with, just because it would severely limit my reading material otherwise. The ones I have read didn't have an homophobia in them. But I can understand it all getting a bit much. Especially if you love Dahl as much as I do. It feels like they let you down somewhat.

It has been on my list for ages and I bought it about a year ago and never got around to reading it until now. Where did I find it? Here at GR. I have been a member since almost the start. I never will be able to read all the books on my lists.

message 85: by Chrissie (last edited May 11, 2013 09:52PM) (new)

Chrissie I have completed Cloudstreet.
My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
It is like an immersion course on post Australian lif -e the colloquialisms and words used can be confusing, but I am glad I read it. It is also about family. Here I would warn that you must not be in a depressed mood when you start. Bad things happen.....and good too.

I have begun One Corpse Too Many. Well, I began reading the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. The first one was not wow, so then I hopped around between others and began to love the people living in the abbey. So now I want to read the books in order so I know every little tidbit about each figure. The above mentioned is the second in the series and it gives good historical background to the Civil War between King Steven and Empress Maude, England 1138. EVERYBODY says these books need NOT be read in order, other than that books 6 and 10 must be read before book 20. I agree, BUT once you fall in love with the whole setting you will not want to miss anything because there are small details that are nice to know. So my advice is start with book The Leper of Saint Giles, b/c it is so good. Then if you are sure you love the series, start from the beginning. I read a couple before I felt motivated to read all of them. We are having a buddy read on this book here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

I am glad to read your assessment here. I thought I remembered the lukewarm reception of A Morbid Taste for Bones. I had recently read that one, spurred on by the television series. I had not continued the series, but now I may.

message 88: by Chrissie (last edited May 12, 2013 12:33AM) (new)

Chrissie Almeta, as I said, I was not THRILLED with "A Morbid Taste for Bones", the first book. No, it wasn't bad but...... I waited ages to try another. THAT is why even for nerds like me, who like to start a series at the beginning, should maybe be advised not to do this here. One might just give up. Each book is short so it takes a while build up a love for the characters. Now when I pick up a new book I recall other incidents and these influence how I feel for the characters. I am hooked on this series and keep in mind that I usually do not like series or mysteries!

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Chrissie wrote: "I am hooked on this series and keep in mind that I usually do not like series or mysteries! ..."

Even a better recommendation!

I'm a mystery fan. Series in this genre is prevalent, although strict order of reading is usually not necessary. Getting to know the characters well enough that you grin at their behavior in satisfaction is part of the fun.

Adding yet another series to a To Read pile, the catching up, then waiting for the next installment is an affliction!
