I read The City and the City. Confusing but I really liked it. Not a book i would recommend to all but I had fun working out how the city was working.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Ok, how do you guys define "squicky?"

message 103: by Debra (last edited May 28, 2013 04:44AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments That's what I thought it was! I'm sure I've read/heard it before and once clearly knew the meaning.

Sharon75uk | 125 comments Finished The Angel Experiment
Really enjoyed this book, it was not what I would normally read but was enjoyable. I have the rest of the series to work my way through :)

Oh and also finished The Age of Miracles but have read similar to this genre before. I enjoyed this book but didn't like the ending.

Kimberly | 2033 comments I finished A Perfect Beast-After Earth by Michael Jan Friedman and I liked it but thought the ending could have been prolonged a bit.

message 106: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I'm almost finished Soulless. I'm almost finished and should be done by tomorrow. Even though vampires and werewolves are not my thing at all, and this is the first Steampunk book I've ever read, it's surprisingly entertaining. Some parts are quite funny, witty and clever. But I still find myself stopping occasionally and wondering...I'm really reading this? Huh.
Of course Foundation arrived yesterday. Always happens that way.

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments I just finished 11/22/63 11/22/63 by Stephen King . I loved it!!

I went from gasping at shock then to tears, then to laughter, then back to gasping again and then to a smile on my face and more tears. What an amazing read!!

Here is my review (spoilerless) http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10...

Lori (glitzyrebel) | 444 comments I finished it!!! I finished Boneshaker!!! The "rotters" are something like zombies (or maybe vampires) which are both something I don't generally read about but all in all I enjoyed the read. Would have never read this book if it had not been for the challenge. I think it has some rather good analogies for certain aspects of life and who knows those analogies might be helpful in explaining something to someone in the future.

I'm still on the fence about whether I would read another book on the same sub-genre....perhaps when I run out of books to read in the sub genre I prefer. Yeah, that would be would the correct answer.

Emily (emilserv) | 490 comments Second post (first post: Message 77 in May 2013 Challenge - Don't Forget Your Towel)

I read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. This book is in the 'steampunk' genre, which I don't seem to read as much of.

I rated the book three stars, and it's probably on the low end of that rating. Although this book seems to have started the steampunk subgenre, I was a bit bored by the end of it. I may try to give the genre another try at some point, but I'll stick with my other sci-fi genres for now.

I felt the same way, Cathie! I re-read it right after I finished it the 1st time.

Lori - I am glad you liked your book and your experience with Steampunk. I have added this book to my list. At least, it seems to have lived up to be in the genre that I wanted to read vs the one I picked and did not feel lived up to the name. I will give it at try when I get a chance. Thanks!

I wanted to Cherie, but there is this toppler that I'm going to be involved in and...well...heehee

Lara | 1426 comments Hmm, I may have to add Boneshaker to my list as well. I really enjoy steampunk, but haven't read any with zombies.

message 114: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I finished Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger .
It was okay, I'd give it 2 stars. I'm still not sold on vampires and werewolves, but the main character made me laugh sometimes.

message 115: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I may try another Steampunker sometime if I can find one without the vampires and werewolves. In the meantime I have a few books to finish before moving on to something new, then I can give Asimov a go with Foundation (Foundation, #1) by Isaac Asimov .

message 116: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments Roz, try The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook . That one has some great world building and a very intelligent and strong heroine.

message 117: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments Thanks Lara. I'll look into that one.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Nice home stretch everyone! Hope you get your 3 hours in Gaeta!

I liked Soulless, but there were some meh bits in it. I have the next two as I am interested in what happens, but I didn't spend a lot of money on them.

Interesting Lara. I have heard mixed things about The Iron Duke. Vaginal Fantasy had it as one of their reads last year, so I have been meaning to pick it up. So they would have an hour long video discussing it on their goodreads group if you pick it up Roz.

Me, I'm not going to have mine done by tonight. I'll report properly when I'm not at work, but Midnight Robber started slowly (but I think half of that was me trying to get my head around the Creole that it's written in) but I am loving it now. Have 120ish pages to go.

Curiosity got the best of me; I was compelled to visit Vaginal Fantasy. I spent an hour watching the Iron Duke video. Those women are awesome! I am not a reader of romances, but I want to join up just to watch their video discussions. :D

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I'm going to be Felicia Day when I grow up (she's the red head).

Also, me neither. I know 3 of them through their "day jobs" - acting, video games reviewers, bloggers, Veronica co-hosts the Sword and Laser which is a fantasy and sci fi book show. But I have read a few of their books because of them, and enjoyed them.

Yeah, Felicia was quite good at being the moderator of the discussion. I'm sure I would just be sitting there struck dumb. (In more ways than one!)

message 123: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Heh sorry to spring that on you Gaeta. Another Goodreads group, http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/6... Should have explained that :P

Me. I finished Midnight Robber last night. The book picked up pace as I picked up the language. It was a wonderfully built world, but the ending was not satisfying to me at all. But if you want to read a scifi with another culture than the standard, than this is a good one. And maybe you'll feel different about the end. I just judge books and people harshly ;)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I should have some time tomorrow to start badging it up. If you still are finishing your read, make sure you let me know how you go.

message 125: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I think I have badged everyone. Except Kimberly, who hasn't said she has finished. Give us a yell if you have or when you do and I will badge you too Kimberly.
If there is anyone I have missed, yell at me.

Thanks for playing everyone!
